145 - OP, try Saiyuki. Meet Nii Jyeni, sadistically evil and waaaaaay crazy scientist, usually carries a stuffed bunny.

what? - Do the number of question marks added on to the 'what' indicate the level of LOL or batshit crazy for the secret? 'Cause you're right, this one was nearly as fun as the previous day's what???

Shit, why the hell didn't I put Nii there?! Clearly I was not in my right mind. Nii should be in the middle. :P

109. I agree so hard.
139. There are more of us out there. Just ignore the haters. :) (I'm even worse for wear because I like the Doctor with a few people... woe is me, I can't pick a side!)
149. That's ridiculous. No one should use it, gays included. Making it exclusive does nothing to help the situation. Just don't use it. Period.

Words like "faggot", "nigger", "jew", people of those groups always say "don't use it unless you are of that group". Well, how about black people, hispanics, and asians stop saying the word "cracker", non-mentally disabled people never say "retard", smart people never say "stupid", and non-Germans never call them Nazis? If you have dark hair & eyes, never say "aryan", if you are male you never say "bitch" or "cunt", if you are a woman you never say "dick", if you are an adult you never say "baby", and other things like that? Words, especially "faggot", are used as colloquials, not to intentionally bash gay people. I have a best friend who is openly gay, and she is also Jewish, and I have another friend who is Jewish. But I've used the words "faggot" and "jew" in derogatory ways. Do I hate Jews and homosexuals? No. I just use the words as insults, they don't always retain their meanings. The world is becoming desensitized to words like that and many of them don't mean anything anymore. Like "um" and "like", they aren't used with meaning, they just fill space. "Faggot" has just become an empty insult, people don't say it to mean "You are gay and I hate all gay people", it's just a word. And words only have as much power as you give them.

You have a point with "retard," but I as soon I read Well, how about black people, hispanics, and asians stop saying the word "cracker" I had to stop.

104) You are probably right. Mostly because people write fanfic in order to get what they can't get out of canon -- usually some romance because the majority of fic writers are women, and yuri writers are rather rare. You might find some genfic though. And probably a porny art if you look in the right places.

108) You hang out with the wrong people. I love Who, I love my friends, they don't like Who, and it all works out. Occasionally I'll mention something I enjoy about the show and that's okay, but I don't expect them to change their minds about it. Occasionally they talk about fandoms they enjoy but that I'm not into, and that's okay, too. But none of us insists that the other watch something they have clearly said they don't like. It doesn't matter what the fandom is, no one is obligated to enjoy something they don't for the sake of friendship.

120) Real friends are 1000 x more satisfying than imaginary ones.

149. Uh, I'm not sure I agree. I understand the idea behind 'reclaiming the word,' but I don't consider the reasoning to be valid. If a word is offensive coming from any one group, it is offensive coming from any other group.

Making yourself ~*special*~ by forbidding those not in the cool club from saying a word will not foster tolerance and acceptance. After all, it's not like orientation is a lifestyle choice. Essentially, you want a group of people to have a privilege simply because they were born the way they are.

tldr: If you call yourself a faggot, I'll feel free to call you a faggot regardless of what my orientation is.

(Anonymous) 2008-06-23 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
"If a word is offensive coming from any one group, it is offensive coming from any other group."

I don't believe this is true. The reason words are offensive is because they're laden with the power imbalance between groups of people who are not on equal footing. A straight person throwing around "faggot" cannot help but lend to it the connotations of the heterosexual majority who combine with the slur the power to actively oppress gay people. It's a tool of hate and fear. For gay people to adopt the term themselves is to attempt to defuse it because now it's being used in a context they can control. That's how word reclamation works.

And in this context there's already a group of people who are automatically steeped in privilege just because they're born the way they are. We call them "straight people".

tl;dr: I'll call myself a dyke if I like, but if you call me a dyke without my permission, you're being rude, threatening, and privilege-blind.

Why are we being forced to choose between "WE DO NOT SPEAK ITS NAME" and "OMG CONTEXT FUCK YOU GUYS?"

Dude. It's both.

Part of context is historical and social context, and who is saying what, to whom, and at what time.

Okay, here, let me just clear this up for everyone:

Don't use words that you know are slurs with people you don't know, especially on the 'net.

Is that so hard, or are people going to keep whining about OMG BUT SOMEONE ONCE CALLED ME A CRACKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER?

Also, no one gives a fuck about your gay friends and what you call them. How you treat your fucking friends is not how you treat random people you don't know very well.

<WANK>... Yeah, this makes me want to use the word faggot SOLELY to piss people like you off. If it was really 'reclamation', anyone would be allowed to say it.

So really, if you want to think about OPPRESSED that word makes you, why the fuck are you using it? Maybe you using it offends ME. Am I not allowed to be offended by it or homophobia in general because I'm not actually homosexual? What the fuck ever.

I could probably live the rest of my life perfectly happily without ever typing or saying the word again, but that blatant double standard just pisses me the hell off. Either it's offensive for ANYONE to use, or for NO ONE to use.
