129.) TL;DR. Stephenie Meyer is a terrible writer. She writes like soggy cardboard left in a back alley. The Host was awful, awful, and more awful.

129 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-06-23 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't call her out-right terrible; her audience simply is one I'm not part of, and haven't been for a while. There are, however, aspects I could say hint at less sophistication in her writing - the way she develops relationships - but that in itself isn't entirely true, because the sorts of relationships she writes do happen with teenagers and older and younger kids these days.

I didn't read The Host, and as such can't comment with any sufficient knowledge.

108. All of my friends love it -- I saw a few episodes and could NOT get into it. I dunno. It's not that it's poorly made or poorly acted, I just didn't like it. Personal opinion. I'm glad someone shares it.

115. I'd do him, but only in the Freddy make-up! >:D

128. At least he's enthusiastic? He's not such a bad guy.

141. I loved that flick -- but I never got into the fandom. While it doesn't surprise me that there's so much Connor/Murphy, I *am* surprised that there isn't alot of Smecker! Why not? He's amazing!

111. It's a shame that this even has to be a secret still. Oh, Gundam Wing fandom, why must you be so filled with wank and stupidity after all this time?

123. To warn you, there's really no in-game OT3 hints for anything. There really aren't even OTP hints, unless you count Neumann/Sabrina (and hells yeah, I shipped them). It's more your standard Harvest Moon pick-your-fave-girl-to-marry game. Just with a lot more fighting, better looking characters, and more life consuming farming. Which means I loved it. That being as it may, I suppose you can OT3 anything in the game. Which yes, would be half the fun.

149. You had me until you said not to use the word unless you were gay yourself. I fail to see how someone deliberately using a derogatory word against their own gender preference is a good idea. I know the whole, "give the power back to the powerless" mentality, but, quite frankly, that just doesn't work. There are just some words that should not be used anymore. By anyone.

Re: 111

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-06-22 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It's weird, because when I was in the fandom (about nine years ago) people were all about not bashing the female characters on the mailing lists I were on. One of them was GWML, the biggest in the fandom at the time, I believe.

I'm not saying it didn't exist of course - it existed enough to make fandom talk about not doing it after all - but it was only done by a tiny part of the fandom, and deeply critisised by the rest of us. Even back then it was considered bad writing, OOC, and all around fanbrat behaviour.

N!F2: Just do it already. She may not friend you back...but she might.

N!S1: Oh-kay!!!! (That looks like a medical problem to me.)

156. Thanks to Age of Sail fandom, I have a crush on a (real) man who's been dead for about 200 years and change. Fortunately he's not my only crush, but his letters, omguh.

155. I can see it. (Doughnut love!!!)

149. I hate that too. Also when people use "gay" as an insult. Fictional characters can say what they want (although I may cringe, and if I think they actually understand what they're saying it may affect my opinion of them) but real people should stop it already.

147. Srsly, she is the only person who has ever made him make sense.

145. It is a hot look. Check out Dr Tomoe in Sailor Moon.

141. There should be more fic about him.

139. :D

138. Then you are a bitch, and I hope whoever it is doesn't have you friended back. Or finds out who you are. And exposes your ass.

128. Develop a very strong backbone.

124. I know right? Me too sometimes.

122. Irresponsible Captain Tyler FTW!!!! I loooooooooved that show!

114. Contact the players and revive the game yourself? Worked for me.

105. Can't...stop...laughing!!!!!!! OMG. Near Dark sekrit FTW. But seriously, wasn't Caleb the stupidest vampire ever? I have watched some asstastic shit for love of that man. I don't understand why anyone thinks Near Dark is better than the Lost Boys. It had Adrian, but everyone in it except his father was dumb as a fucking doornail. I watched Solarbabies too. And Touched By Evil (in which Adrian as the rapist was more sympathetic than Paula Abdul as the victim, because he can't actually make you believe he is one). And Mysterious Ways, well, five episodes (Declan Dunn is such a smarmy asshat, Jim Profit is actually nicer!) BTW, Shanghai 1920 is REALLY ACTUALLY GOOD and has the best subtext EVAR. Anyhow, you win the internets.

104. What is that?

103. Oh jeez you too?

Normally I don't read the comments on these posts because I could care less and mostly read F!S to find the few ones that amuse me...(ie 110, Data/Lore ftw!) but for fucking seriously?

The response #149 has caused reminds me why I stay away from fandom at large. Words are not just words. If someone makes a call to stop using hate speech, you'd think there would be a generally supportive response, not half of the people just going 'boo double standards!'. If the 149 OP wants to reclaim a hateful slur for their own use, then fine - personally, yeah, I think not using the word at all is better, but that's just me.

The main thing is, if you're gay or bi or an ally or what-the-fuck-ever, why would you be using the word 'faggot' as a catch-all random insult anyway? If I see someone use it, I assume they're a homophobic jerkface. And if I see other people in a space where it's being used, and not condemning it, I assume they're okay with homophobia.

Congratulations, fandom! You're fucking classy!

Re: 149

[identity profile] likespring.livejournal.com 2008-06-22 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't personally use any slurs even in a reclaiming context for groups I'm part of, except in rare cases. But I have seen some gay men identify as "faggot," and that's fine. That's reclaiming. Calling a feminine gay man "faggot" as an insult, however, is not, and not okay in my book no matter who uses it.

But seriously, the responses here as a whole are so depressing.
