Oh yes, and 116: The point at which a Lulu who is "about to deliver any day now" (Wakka's words) appears to be as skinny as she was back in X? I turned the PS2 off and didn't go back. *shrug*

114- Ain't that the truth!

122- For you, how is that a secret? I bet you worship in the Church of Joss.

138- What? You won't be allowed a laptop and some free time?

As someone who works in a bookstore (and has to open tomorrow and deal with the Breaking Dawn releases, ugggh), I can safely say that plenty of other books have gotten young girls to read. In fact, in the three years I've worked selling books, I've noticed a lot more young girls coming in and buying books on their own than young boys. I disagree with a lot of what young girls are buying -- The Clique, The It Girl, Pretty Little Liars, etc. -- but I'm still glad to see them reading nonetheless. That includes Twilight, and I don't care about the "bawww but they only read stuff similar to Twilight too!" That's a yes-and-no sort of thing -- some do, some don't.

Still, the fact that girls have recreational reading is a good thing, even if it is bad books about sparkly vampires. Don't a lot of people go through a vampire phase anyway? They'll probably branch out and find new books to read in the future. Twilight will die down soon and girls will find something new to obsess over.

For the record, I like Twilight, but I love to laugh at how bad it is too. I'm in the middle of Breaking Dawn right now and lol'd so much at Edward eating pillows.

EDIT: Also, I've noticed people making the comment that it rationalizes Edward and Bella's relationship to be normal and romantic. Yes, I agree that they have a very unhealthy relationship. But think of it in terms of fanfic -- don't people in fandom like reading about equally messed-up things in fanfic? Nobody goes for that sort of stuff in real-life because it's just fantasy or a kink, so why should a girl reading about Twilight be any different? If my hypothetical daughter were reading Twilight, I would at least make sure she understood that having a relationship like Edward and Bella's wasn't healthy and that it's just fiction.

I would at least make sure she understood that having a relationship like Edward and Bella's wasn't healthy and that it's just fiction.

But that's exactly the problem, most parents don't, and girls actually do think that it's a perfect romantic relationship.

162. I like the series, but the relationships were always ... a little off. >:| It never seems consensual, most of what happens between any of the characters is started out as forced by the 'seme.' It's a little disconcerting.

[identity profile] chicafrom3.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
130. HOMGYES. Well, no. I wouldn't necessarily call it the best novel series ever. Best YA novel series ever, though. Way above and beyond what most kids' series tends to aim for and definitely a major impact on my life and my views on war/trauma/responsibility/growing up/fitting in/being yourself/family/friends/lots of other issues. I still reread them regularly and am totally awed by how many supposedly adult issues KA Applegate got into the pages of kids' books that rarely ran longer than a couple hundred pages.

Also? Was totally in love with Tobias. He's probably responsible for my continuing love of loner emotionally-broken insecure boys, actually.

141. No. See above comment as well as everything other comments have said. Lots of other books -- better books -- have 'gotten young girls to read'. I know. I'm one of them. And none of the books my friends and I devoured as kids featured sparkly vampires, and the unhealthy relationships weren't held up as something to admire and aspire to.

151. NEWSIES SECRET! *bounces* Yeah, I see it. I don't ship it, really, but I totally see it.

130

116. :U I thought the game was just dumb as hell. I still need to finish it, though. But uh... yeah I PLAYED IT BECAUSE RIKKU/PAINE IS LIKE OTP. *SHAMELESS*

Also Lulu/Wakka makes me BARF.

135. OH MY GOD ME TOO!!!!!!!!!! *JAMS ON A KEYBOARD*

136. ME TOO. :3 ALSO A CHICK. I SAY WE HAVE A BIG AWESOME LEEEEEEEEEEEEESBIAN THREESOME

141. LOL

[identity profile] delfeus.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
143. I don't think that is the only reason it's so popular. I loved Joker, but every time he actually looked like Heath I lost the focus on the character. I think it's sad that it's the last film we'll see from him, as he certainly did a great job, but other than that I don't really care. The reason why I wanted to see the film is because I love Christian Bale and Batman Begins was the first really good Batman film I had seen. Admittedly all the Joker secrets (esp. in nurse costume) affected my decision to see it in the theatre, but it had nothing to do with Heath and everything to do with how Joker's my type of character.

[identity profile] leoin.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
101. LOL I did the same thing. It's awesome. Whedonheads already know that he brings the pain. Also, I agree about the revifification ray D:

104. WORD. WORD WORD WORD. Early!Lestat is the sexiest thing ever.

114. Clone Wars ♥ I really hope this is fun. Mainly because it's coming out on my birthday and I am forcing my friends (SW fans or not) to see it with me.

117. I teared up too.

130. Omg Animorphs. I loved this so much back in the day. I can't remember much of the books, though the short lived tv series is still burned into my brain.

142. They have sexual chemistry/tension/whatever. Don't worry about it.

159. You are preaching to the choir. Oh man. I don't know what my problem is. Evil, emotionally stunted, hollow, broken crazies just do it for me. We Whedonites do it best.

.. Wow, yay for all the Horrible love.

130. I always liked Tobias myself. I use to love going to the bookstore and buying them every month.

147. I had to move a lot growing up too. But I use to pretend we had to move because I was a Gundam pilot and OZ found out my identity. Mom always wondered how I packed so fast.

ETA: 138. Keep safe and try to see if a friend will send you links or memory some of the best fandom stuff and send it to you once a week or something. I kept my dad up to date on all his comics and technology this way.

I don't know what it is, but I kind of just hate every Dr. Horrible secret. I just can't stand any of them. This is something pure and raw and emotional and it does not need to be associated with anything even remotely wanky; broadcasting your opinions about it loudly and obnoxiously (the only way opinions CAN be broadcast in a comm like this) just seems to destroy its integrity. MAYBE I'M TAKING IT TOO SRSLY but like..... I just hate every Dr. Horrible secret.

Also, 130? Let's be best friends.

122 - I didn't care for it, thought it was boring. But you are right: there is something wrong with me :-)

165 - Nurse!Joker is hot. Crazy Joker/Two Face violent hatesex for the win!

142

[identity profile] tessenchan.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Of course you do! Everyone ships it.

Even the Joker himself ships it. "You complete me...?"

(Anonymous) 2008-08-02 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
104. Srsly, doesn't anyone remember? Before Twilight, all the little goth girls were drooling over Lestat, and particularly the movie Queen of the Dammned. But I guess it didn't bother me because those books were actually well written and not fucking stupid...

109. *blinks at picture* ....Dahh...slowing turning...bisexual...

112. I like them. Not every one of their songs, and certainly not every album (I think the closest I've gotten to liking a whole album from them was A Rush of Blood to the Head...but it still was no cigar) but I certainly don't think their the hottest shit on the planet. I can see why you don't like them. :x Haven't heard any of the new stuff though...

114. I'm not into the SW fandom. I like the movies, barely. But that movie looks pretty exciting. =]

122. Okay, no. Just no. I don't give a shit about Dr. Horrible. I'm sure it's pretty good - but I don't feel like giving it any of my time as of right now, if ever. Because it doesn't spark my interest. Please, just stfu.

125. I sympathize...but who knows? It might be pretty awesome.

129. Yeah, that's about...the third secret I've seen about that? Uh huh. I get it...people ship 'em. >_>; new secret plz?

130. Well, I'd argue most books are better than Twilight. xD

135. Um...k?

136. She's a rather pretty specimen, yes?

141. It definitely isn't about the reading. I don't mind these girls reading. What's annoying is that the said girls go around saying it's the best written thing ever, or that they are "SUCH A NERD BECAUSE I READ BOOKS, LOL." No. Just no.

142. You and a shit load of other people.

143. I don't know if it helps, but I was a Batman fan before TDK. I grew up watching the animated series. I'm not a hardcore fan and I never read the comics, but there's always been a love there. It's a fascinating world, I completely agree. And while Ledger did do a terrific job, I understand where you're coming from. People only like the film because it was his last/he was in it. The movie itself is great. Batman, the whole universe and themes and all, is great. Not just Ledger's Joker.

148. IAWTS. And I really, REALLY don't like her.

153. Can someone please explain this secret to me? I see TDK, and I see Avatar (which sends my interest SKY HIGH) but I can't figure out what they are trying to say! D:

154. LOL.
ps: djfajf;soifjsdo I LOVE MULAN

160. Eh? I think I'm missing the point. xD

161. wtf indeed.

165. See my response to 142.

166. afjd;osijsdofisj ME TOO. Though I haven't watched all of the third series, so maybe I'm missing something. But who was that? And why did Toph hug him?!

166

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
That's The Duke, who used to be one of Jet's gang. In the second part of Season 3, he and some of the others stayed with the Gaang, so he and Toph might have hung out some. Plus, during an important battle, they're together in a submarine, and Toph starts to get sick. The Duke offers her is helmet to puke into. ^_^

144. But it's so true!

[identity profile] midnight-birth.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
113. Wow! That one took me way back and gave me chills. That would be an incredible tattoo!!

116. I'll have to disagree. I think the sequel was pretty poor. I'm not a fan girl in the least. I like FF. I thought the plot was very poor, yes. For me, that's actually a big deal. I've come to expect a lot from Final Fantasy games, simply because they've continuously set up a very high standard for themselves, that single one aside. It seems that they didn't put enough effort in it. You can get through the game in very little time. The music and graphics were very inferior to its prequel, and any other FF I've ever played. The plot was messily thrown together for one sole purpose of bringing Yuna and Tidus together. The rest of the characters were under-developed.

Don't get me wrong. I don't like when people continuously whine about stuff. But I wouldn't generalize people like you did, saying that they only dislike it because it's "girly" etc. Some people have legit, technical reasons for disliking what they do, not just silly superficial ones. FF has been going for many years. It set up a certain standard and gained MANY followers. I think that's why it's such a big deal when one of them doesn't mean the standard so clearly.

125. I don't see anything bad about something being so great someone wants to make a different interpretation of it. I mean, it's nice to see it in a movie theater, and if you learn how to separate (as Alan Moore does), it's not a big deal. But you already set yourself up for disappointment with no real reason quite yet, so just don't watch it and spare everyone yet ANOTHER "omg this is how this movie sucked and this is all 1,000000000000000 ways it was different from the book, listed alphabetically".

142. Nothing to be ashamed of. Always have, always will. Had a crush on the Joker since tender age of very young, too. :P

143. I thought this too.. But it doesn't make much sense to me now. It was just as anticipated since the first trailer came out and we got to hear him do the LAUGH. Yes, maybe some people do go see it because "it's Heath's last film" etc, but I think everyone walks out of there loving it because it's GOOD. Because he actually did an unbelievably orgasmic job, not because "aww he's dead now thus we can't critique him normally". Believe me, I've read all the Batman comics and Joker was always my favorite. If Heath did a bad job, I don't care if he's dead. I would've WANKED.

148. I hate her. What's the big deal? Some random girl with no real AMAZING voice nor amazing acting talent acting in kiddy Disney shows. I mean, c'mon, do people NOT KNOW what good acting is? Or good singing? And she's going to end up exactly like Britney - live the "adult" life now, and then break down in her 20s because she never got to have a healthy teenagehood and do what she wants to do and be who she wants to be. But the only thing that I have to say is that - I have to stop seeing her face everywhere. It makes me nauseous.

Not that Tom Baker isn't still hot, not that there is something cute about him, but does anyone suspect that perhaps he posts some of the many "Tom Baker is hot," fandom secrets himself? That he is secretly lurking in this comm?

Is the book of lost things anything like JS&MN? I love JS&MN sofa king much.

130
Animorphs is seriously amazing and I think it wins over all those series except HDM.

OP 110

(Anonymous) 2008-08-02 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It sort of is and it sort of isn't. A boy's mother dies, and he retreats into the world of books-literally. He finds himself in a world where fairy tales are everywhere and they are not very nice, so he tries to find 'The Book of Lost Things' which will take him home.

They both have beautiful, dense prose, and the same feeling of magic, but other than that, they are quite different. I'd argue that both of them are equally brilliant, just on different levels.

Does that help?

138: I don't usually check fandomsecrets, but a friend of mine thought that I had submitted this particular secret. Why? Well...

I feel you. So very, very much. I'm in the exact same situation -- about to enlist in the Air Force. I want to be a soldier, I want to be a pilot, more than almost anything. You understand that same feeling better than anyone else, I bet. Though, I'm still depressed over leaving fandom; it's like abandoning an old friend.

Think about it, though -- while we're gone, fandom isn't going anywhere. That's the beauty of it. Sure, once we leave for basic, things will change. We can't pop on LJ once every ten minutes to see if anyone's posted something new and we can't update at our leisure. But while we're out there, we'll be doing the things that other people dream about. And when we get back, we'll have plenty of inspiration (and plenty of free weekends on which to catch up on what's good, without having to wait through dry spells for new material!).

Good luck.
