Is that a Monster secret?
If it is, ILU. If not, all anime characters look too alike.

138. I'm sorry for asking something almost wholly unrelated, and you don't have to answer by any means, but... will you get to fly jets? I'd give up fandom to fly jets.

157. Why must you use that picture, leading me to sink back into depression over my inability to write smut of any kind for that pairing. I'll take the purple prose option, plz.

166. Yes. Yes, what is that? I completely missed that on my first viewing >|

Too Big 1

I had a limp for three weeks, because all I was doing was watching House. No pain, just a psycho-somatic limp.

Both of you guys need to change the way you sit when watching TV. :-)

123. HOLY DONKEYSADDLES that is BWO. but you know, as much gay and weird and LOVEABLE CRAZY that band has, I just cannot agree. The blondie is just too... bland for me to really feel I am capable of shipping him with Alexander Bard, who is too out there to be shipped with any earthly creature, in my opinion.

144. ... Dammit this looks familiar but I cannot palce it. Which kid's show is it?

t!b 2. Well... growing up in CLAMP series WOULD drive anyone to DESPAAAIIR!

141 - Ditto. Getting anyone to read is a feat, and getting young girls to read is especially so. Ever hear that This American Life episode with a segment about a quiz show for young girls that failed horribly?

143 - No, I'm pretty sure it's because it's actually a good movie. I and everyone else I know want to see the movie three more times, and none of them are at all fans of Heath Ledger.

[identity profile] svgurl.livejournal.com 2008-08-01 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Books have been doing this WAY before Twilight even came into existence, the most recent being Harry Potter. I'd never hand my child the Twilight series.

Re: 116

[identity profile] night-is-fallen.livejournal.com 2008-08-01 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I wasn't going to say anything about this secret, because I felt like everything had already been said. But looking back at what the OP wrote, I have to say, I'm really offended by the whole thing. Because of course, only an FFX "fanbrat" would have a problem with X-2, right?

Honestly, I really don't give a flying damn about the gameplay in RPGs. Yes, it has to be accessible and not just a huge pain in the ass, but when I'm playing an RPG, I'm playing for STORY AND CHARACTERS. This is fact. Also fact? I adored Yuna and Rikku in FFX. ADORED them. "Yuna" and "Rikku" in FFX-2 are not the same girls. They are not the Yuna and Rikku I expected and was hoping to see when I bought the game and played it. These were just vapid girls who vaguely resembled their namesakes.

I don't care that the plot was "lighthearted". Whatever, I don't judge things based on how "deep" they are. That being said, I feel that the plot of X-2 is pure fanservice. My beloved Yuna and Rikku are nowhere to be found, replaced instead by these silly girls who chant asinine little chants and wear skimpy-as-hell clothing (that Yuna, especially, would not be caught dead in, just saying). Everything that happens in X-2 completely cheapens the events of X. FFX has one of the most (if not THE MOST) compelling endings of the series. X-2 acts like it never happened.

One of the reasons I loved FFX was because it was so somber. And OMG, the music in FFX is among my favorite music ANYWHERE. There are no traces of the hauntingly beautiful compositions of X anywhere in X-2's soundtrack. It's all poppy and shallow, much like the game's plot itself. Spira was a world of great suffering, and while it's GOOD that they were able to overcome that, it would have been NICE to see a little bit more homage paid to everything and everyone that was lost.

I am glad that Tidus and Yuna got a happy ending, I am. But I think they should have gone about it in a different way. X-2 just felt like such a rip-off to me. There was no hint of what made FFX so beautiful and heartfelt anywhere in X-2 at all.

Re: 116

[personal profile] fuyu 2008-08-01 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno, I personally think it's going a little far to say there was NOTHING of FFX in the sequel. The tone, plot, and characterization were all a fairly sudden left turn from FFX, yes, and I cheerfully smack large portions of the game with the Discontinuity stamp, but... I found a lot of the subplots to be quite moving or at least satisfying, and as for the characterization... One of my standout memories from the game was, when the Gagazet plot built up to that confrontation on the mountain, watching Yuna and suddenly feeling at peace with her characterization. She had never quite rung right to me either, but in that scene I was finally satisfied that under the guns and the hotpants, that was still my Yuna. Admittedly, I have more trouble with Rikku...

I thought at least some of the seeming irreverence in X-2 was intentional. The Zanarkand subplot especially - when you go there to Zanarkand, this place full of close and painful memories for Yuna, and it's covered with tourists and there's a game show and nobody gives a damn, I thought the purpose of that was to make you angry along with Yuna. Worked on me, at least.

I agree that X-2 cheapens X's ending (which is a bit awkward for me, because at the same time I really like it) but I don't know if you can really say X-2 acts like it didn't happen?

I definitely agree that the game had issues aplenty, and could have been much truer to its forebear. I just also think it deserves a little more credit than it gets.

107. It was immediately obvious to me. In fact, the moral ambiguity is my favorite thing about the series. There really aren’t any good guys, not by the strictest definition.

114. George Lucas or not, the very concept of it makes me want to projectile vomit out of every orifice. The entertainment business just does NOT know when to let things die.

142. Really? You’re ashamed? Because I keep hearing people on fanficrants complaining that nobody’s writing anything else right now.

143. ONLY popular? I would’ve seen it if Ledger had died or not. I love it when super hero movies get more realistic, or focus on the human side of the characters. THAT’S why I saw it.

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-08-01 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa, another Dr. Horrible love fest today....

109. Whoa, okay, the last time I read anything Birds of Prey was back in high school with it was a new series. I might start reading it again.

112. The last album is wank? Why? And the song is Vida la Viva. And as a somewhat Coldplay fan, Viva la Vida album is the best so far.

116. No matter how fun the battle system was (although it loses a bit of its the charm once the novelty wore off after getting all the Dress Spheres), the story was pretty shitty and was too thin for a sorta non-linear game. I LOVE LOVE the YRP (although I wish Lulu was a part of it instead being knocked up), but the fact if you get the perfect ending that shits all over the emotional end of X is unfair if you wanted to complete the game, although the game itself isn't worth retreading at all. I didn't mind the fanservice and cheesecake, I just wish it had a better story. The Shen/Lenne story bored me for the most part.

143. Humans have that kind of morbid curiosity. It didn't help there were rumors that that part costed Ledger his life. Meh, I was going to watch it anyway because IT'S THE MOTHERFUCKING BATMAN. I dunno, I don't care what reason the people went to see it, but it was a fantastic movie, not only for Ledger's phenomenal performance, Eckhart and Bale's performances as well. It was a great movie all around.

149. Hachiko's story is heartbreaking. ;_;

157. LOL. I don't mind if the smut is somewhat flowery, but if someone uses "manroot" as an euphemism, nothing can make me press the back button faster. "Member" is annoying too....

160. Okay, the point of the show that everyone is in the wrong for the behavior and get a through dressing down of sorts for acting that way. Of course, they don't learn. Even Huey is not immune.

162. Wut? Usagi is supposed to act like he was childish due to he never experienced a normal childhood. He didn't came across a pedo at all...

Too Big!Secret 2: I like to think that too.

Bait: LOL The troll has been called out.

114. I want to see it because of that girl's hair. horn. things.

that is one hella pathetic reason. D:

121. The hell does Twilight have to do with religion? o_o

135. I don't know who you are, but you are fabulously crazy

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-08-01 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
107. Yeah, it never occurred to me that it was either, until f!s. I mean, you could go a bit academic with it, but at the end of the day, you have to admit that Light laughs maniacally while writing up people to die and has no remorse in killing people, even people who've become his friends. At the most, you can argue about whether he was a psychopath before the DN or if the DN itself just inherently makes someone like that (because he was so earnest about catching Kira when he memory-wiped).

110. Hm. Two new books to read, methinks.

119. What's it, and who's the chipper one on the left?

141. No. No. Quite simply Epic Fail. Forget "not cool." Try...excuse me, I'm so sickened that I'm having difficulty getting the words right. Try...weak, pathetic, and contributing to literary downfall...no, that's not getting it right either.
Look, if you want to like the book, fine. It will make me question your literary taste, especially if you've proven to be a reasonable reader before hand, but it's still what you like.
But to...excuse what is honestly absolutely wretched, my-kid-sister-could-do-as-well prose, to say nothing of the lame flat characters and mind-numbing plot because "it's gotten young girls to read"...That's just horrible.
Honestly, I'm tired of this "it doesn't matter what they're reading, at least they're reading" approach on children's literature. Why? Because you're going to write like you read. Heck, you'll probably think like you read. Taken as part of a well-balanced "diet," shall we say, of books, as nothing more than a bit of fluff, it's harmless enough. If that and others like it comprise the chief part of what a young girl reads, it's no better than mental poison. It sets the notion that this kind of writing is good, acceptable, and worst of all, imitable. If you read books and you like this one, fine. If this is the only type of book you're going to read, I'm not going to question your intellegence--I'm going to dismiss it entirely.

...I wish I could phrase that better, but it's midnight, and I'm hungry. But at any rate, HORRIBLE THOUGHT IS HORRIBLE.

145. Okay, I've only seen the first episode, but I have to ask...how is it canon? Really? If LoM all happened in Sam's head, and A2A is all happening in her head...then the only place where the two universes really overlap is in Sam's world, where she read the report. Other than that, it is her brain making fanfic for her.

Also, I didn't see the heels at first and thought she was jumping or something. Heh.

151. Oooh, what is it? So familiar...

154. I had a thing for Ling, but year, guy!Mulan was...well-drawn.

I think in some ways, a more interesting debate might be about L and his motives. He sees it as a game to be won just as much, or perhaps more, than he really cares about the people's lives.
