112. Hell yeah. Even if I hadn't liked the rest of Stardust (but I did) I'd have liked Septimus. (Then again, I like Snape, so being reminded of him would be a GOOD thing.)

137. I've read some of your "recs" and while I enjoyed those authors/books, they just aren't the same, IMHO. HDM changed my life, literally, and Harry Potter is pretty much my favorite book series of all time. I do think Eragon is crap though. Won't even go into Twilight. Really, people's love of the books has nothing to do with being well written... it has to do with the heart of the books, and what they make most people feel. Not to mention the communities that have grown around them. Well written doesn't always = amazing, sometimes it equals something you can barely stay awake reading. To each their own, though.

Possibly trollan', but: The characters you like played by RL actors are about as real as cartoons are, they're both images on a screen, and there's no real difference, they're just faces and voices. I'll stick with my 2d beauties, thanks.

Watchmen was pretty revolutionary at the time it came out, since back then everyone still thought comics about superheroes needed to be fun. Watchmen completely broke that assumption by having nothing but superheroes discussing boring things, angsting, and generally being completely ineffectual and unlikeable.

This actually started a new trend in comics where new heroes were created and older heroes were reworked to fit this new "angsty, dark, mature" mold, and pretty soon the whole thing was ridden entirely into the ground, but the damage was done and now you can't have a superhero comic without long pages of exposition on how the world is so much different now that there's some people in colorful tights running around.

So, yeah, it's not considered a work of art because it's *good*, it's just that it introduced some (at the time) new ideas that everyone started copying.

137. You think that His Dark Materials is badly written? Say what you like about its message, about its agenda, about Pullman being out to convert children to atheism or whatever, but badly written? I strongly disagree. And if that makes you lose respect for me, I can assure you that the feeling is mutual. Likewise, Harry Potter is far from badly written. It isn't well written, either, but it isn't bad. It falls somewhere in-between. Eragon...well, that is something we can agree on.

146. No, we're not. That's all I'm gonna say about that, lest this go into TMI territory.

159. Objectively, I do believe that Cowboy Bebop is one of the best anime ever made. Subjectively, however, I did not enjoy it that much. I much preferred Samurai Champloo.

182. Are you honestly putting Spike in the same category as Edward Cullen? For shame, anon. For shame.

So no, I don't think it "should" matter to you. If it does, it does; if it doesn't, it doesn't. Nothing wrong with either.

Sometimes, I swear people forget to include the context of the era when they read stuff. Watchmen was written in the eighties, during the tail end of the Cold War, and it was one of the first to subvert the entire superhero genre; that's part of the major reason why everyone considers it such a classic.

...Though I personally do think it's good, but you have to appreciate it for the flawed characters and the themes, not for the sole storyline itself. Watchmen is one of those things where when you try to summarize it for someone, it just doesn't work, because yeah--it basically becomes, "there's a murder conspiracy and someone teleports a giant alien thing to New York and half the city dies."

When all you can see of the comic is something as two dimensional as that, no wonder you think it sucks. :/

Re: 188

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-08-25 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
This. Although often I think it's not so much that they forget to include the context of the era as that they have no clue what that even means.

I really, really don't get how anyone could read it and not pick up on the "who will watch the Watchmen?" theme, but eh, I suppose a lot of people have never heard that line before either.

101. Having a significant other isn't the be-all-end-all of life. If you feel you don't need someone, it's alright. As long as you're not a total recluse, I think you'll be just fine. ;)

110. I loved that movie. It was the first Disney movie that I've really liked in a couple of years. ):

111. ...Well. I guess you learn something new everyday. xD

126. Eh? I'm retarded so I'll ask you to explain more clearly.

128. Oh please. You don't read porn or fic of anything animated? Wow, you and more than half the world, kiddo. Different strokes for different folks. Who are you to judge people for their sexual excitement? Fuck off.

132. MONK. YES. HELL YES. :D ♥

137. LOL whatever you say, troll.

144. What band is this?

146. That doesn't make sense to me. Afraid of my sexuality = LOTSA GAY PRON? Hmm.

150. And I want so badly to live in the Pokemon world. So. Badly. I'm 18.

152. *bawls like a baby that Avatar is over*

159. Eh, like whatever you want. I personally find Bebop much more enduring and a far better story. But to each their own.

173. Seconded.

184. WHAT DID I MISS?! D:

188. ): I've never read the novel but I want to with the release of the movie...but...your description makes me wary.

N!S#1. Well duh. Almost anything else Disney is better than HSM and Pirates.

137. Ew, don't HDM and HP in the same category as Eragon. I don't remember Pullman or Rowling blatantly ripping off other fantasy authors.

150. YES. Or the world in Adventure/02... Also, I'm still waiting for my Hogwarts acceptance letter and I'm 22.

159. I love them both equally. I find it hard to compare them though because they are just so DIFFERENT, imo.

182. Ew, don't put Lestat in the same category as Edward. Lestat has an actual personality, even if he does thinks he's God's gift to EVERYONE, even the other vampires. Also, who is the guy at the bottom?
