What they felt was real, sure, and that's why it's a tragedy. They were too consumed by their feelings to be sensible or temperate or anything. Their feelings were the fatal flaw that always leads to a bad end :(

My point was that I feel they really were in love, that if they had been given the chance, they would have stayed together and been happy.

Every time the play comes up (back in high school, at performances, watching one of the movie versions) everyone but me is dead certain that it was just lust. That it was totally superficial and empty.

What can I say? I'm an idealist, I believe in love at first sight. I felt alone in that. Other people my age don't see romance or tragedy, they just see rash stupidity.

Actually not liking a character because he/she is popular is the opposite side of the same coin of only liking a character because he/she is popular. Like what you like.

[...no, not really]

[...OR IS IT???]

153. Everyone who knows anything about comics and humor has hated Family Circus for years. And from what I've seen of it, the FBOFW fandom pretty much consists entirely of people who hate the current plot thread of Elizabeth's completely forced, contrived wedding. So don't worry kid, you're not alone.

162. Just like in the real world, there should be room for all sorts of pairings: slash, het, femmeslash. Don't be discouraged!

163. Ehh. I prefer her comic outfit, actually. It's just too damn shiny. Vinyl Spectre, bleh.

166. Well DUH. I mean, uh, shitwait--

182. Psh, Doctor rivalry is totally canon. Maybe not the "over companions" part, but... c'mon, watch some of the old multi-Doctor stories. Two and Three are snarktacular yo.

187. Hot damn, who is that?! I'm, uh, asking for my sister-in-law. Totally.

Thanks for your kind words! Don't worry, I'll now ship characters and not sexes. Whatever the couple happens to be, if I like them… I like them. I won’t care if they both have penises or breasts, I’ll care about their personality.

161. How is this different in any way from what 99% of fandom does anyway? :D

Being a "serious writer" has taught me to recognise (and envy with a fiery lust) the skill, talent, and intermittent genius of the same showmakers that fandom routinely spits on.

101. So have you found any frequent passagers that WOULD look good cosplaying a character? Curious minds want to know.

104. What canon is this?

115. Oh snap now I'm thinking of the Joker dressing up as Ronald and preying upon little children outside McDonalds. This is scary stuff.

133. Well see, that isn't entirely right to do, is it? You view hate as a very strong word, and I'm sure you have reasons for it, but lord knows that I have used 'hate' when I mean 'dislike' before, either in a comically exaggarated context or just because I felt I wanted to make an impact. Perhaps one can argue that I am to blame for using a word that does not mean what I mean, perhaps we can say that one should make a bigger attempt at seeing the reasoning behind each individual's use of the word, but I wouldn't say that hating someone because they say they hate fictional characters when we often cannot discern the reasoning behind the use of the words is a good thing to do.

Or maybe I'm just taking words on the internet too seriously and should be relaxing a little.

136. I think it is because it doesn't seem fandom is very fond of the Gackt-dude, and hence there isn't much shipping going on.

140. QUESTION is this art mostly sexual in nature or is it mostly just trippy stuff? For I am ALWAYS down with trippy Earthbound-art.

143. I get the feeling CLAMP is responsible for many, MANY a problematic ship and "BUT I PROMISED MYSELF I WOULDN'T GO THERE AARGHSIGHGÖHL". It's sort of what they do best, me thinks.

152. Inform of this canon someone. It seems mighty interesting to read if it is in other languages beside German, of course.

158. Theirs was a love that was too good for Marvel to go unruined. Damn you Marvel. Deadpool could have so taken care of the futurebaby too! He and Cable can be babydaddies and Bob and Weasel zany uncles! It can totally be done, why could you not go through with it... why...

164. Well that won't remain a secret for long! Then again, it was rather sweet so I am willing to overlook it! Do notify the internets what her response to all of it, if she's reading this comm that is!

166. Is that Gokusen? And is that, in fact, a dog wearing a jacket?

170. Monkey Island as in the island deep in the Carribean Sea, where under a giant monkey lies a secret deep and old of which many tales are told? Particularly 'bout the secret that lies underneath the Earth where hell is (though you will be lost without a navigator's head)? The island deep in the Carribean Sea, that you reach if you make a left by Dinky?

173. ... You know, I do agree. I found them a worse lovestory than Squall and Rinoa. The game was a bit more exciting though. And had Kongol, so that kind of makes up for it all.

178. Those are a LOT of books. What are they about?

101. Is that sum NYC bus? Also, that's so cute.

106. Not in the fandom, but sage doesn't work that way....

115. I always thought of Ronald as frightening. Seriously. And I like clowns.

133. Okay... you do come off as a miss-know-it-all. If someone hates a character, their biz. I don't see how dislike makes it better, quite honestly. It matter HOW they act towards it than anything.

135. Dude. It's not that hard. It's usually based on the first two syballes (in Japanese) of their name they're most reffered to in the series using the old or modern Japanese number kanji, although Spanner is a special case because he has two numbers because of the Chinese fandom and usual way.

153. Well, For Better or For Worse will stop putting out strip regularly soon, but boo on you, these comics were entertaining.

159. LOL, whut?

165. Oh, man. If the rumored spoiled are true, Episode 22 will be a doozy for you, maybe for a good reason.

172. He's MANLY! Okay, I kid. To be honest, Junior might be a tiger in the bed. RAWR! LOL, I love you for the Reno 911 secret, seriously.

181. You made me wonder if Not!Fandom #2 was a Hetalia secret, damn you!

re: 135

(Anonymous) 2008-09-02 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
The Reborn numbering system made quite a lot of sense until fandom decided they had to keep on with it.

Now it's drawing from on readings, kun readings, English readings, and...things that don't actually exist (such as voiced consonants on words that never appear as such in regular Japanese), and finding any darn syllable in their name that could POSSIBLY fit in order to give them numbers.

My newest favorite being Leo, who is apparently 00. I can only figure out that the first zero is from Rei, and the second one from...the letter O, an alternate ENGLISH "pronunciation" of the number zero.

This is a world that mocks people for learning Japanese simply for their fandoms. And yet the English-speaking fandom is, at the same time, asking that they learn both Japanese number systems, and their alternates in voiced and unvoiced consonants, whether they're used in the actual language or not. The Japanese fandom does use numbers for the main five (Hibari, Gokudera, Yamamoto, Tsuna, and Mukuro), but after that- it has MOSTLY just stuck with names. Which is how my perhaps overly-arrogant ass feels it should be.

101. Oh God, this secret makes me wonder if you've seen me on the bus and wondered who I should cosplay as. O_O

139. I haven't played Soul Caliber IV yet but it sure sounds like I want to, lol. Back with the character creation in SCIII my friends and I would make fighters that most resembled Harry Potter characters and have them fight each other in Battle Arena. This amused us for like, 6 hours straight one night.

161. Recently every time I've read a novel I've found I do the exact same thing - "the book was OKAY, but it would have been much better if blahblahblah..." And I'm wondering if I've just been reading crappy books where the author doesn't get it, or if writing fanfiction has made me perpetually unhappy with canon.

153. I HATE THEM TOO. I was so happy when I found out For Better of For Worse had ended, but it turns out they're rerunning the whole thing with a few remade strips. D: At least it's finally been removed from my news paper.

Oh, and I found a site a while back where people put their own captions to Family Circus strips. It was hilarious. I wish I still had it.

138 - Ianto is... uninteresting, to me. Mainly because he is so badly written. He's either the most incompetently portrayed character ever, or next season will reveal his dissociative personality disorder. As for Jack/Ianto, I can't help thinking it's only there so the BBC can say 'look how progressive we are!' because that pairing makes no sense.

166 - I couldn't help thinking that all the way through the book. And then I sobbed my little heart out at the end.
