I've read all the ones up to the Turkey book. They were really doing much for me then which is why I stopped reading them though my mother still buys them when they come out.

Um... I sort-of assumed it was implied that I was asking that question of people who were actually in the Crisis Core fandom.

118. I know how you feel. If I didn't have them to comfort me and make me laugh I don't know what I'd do to myself.

178. CAT WHO SECRET!! I thought I was one of like, 10 people in the world whose even heard of them, forget reading them! I like Polly OK, I guess, but from what I've heard she's become something completely different in the latest book.

166. I tried VERY HARD to resist the slash goggles in that book.
In the end it only worked because I imagined George and Lennie as Waffle and Mr. Black (who are brothers) from the comic Gear, respectively. :P
SPOILER: Actually works 'cause Waffle does die in that comic about halfway through.

132. They must be immature or delusional... unless they actually believe that the morally correct thing to do is to perform mass euthanasia for the majority of the human population on the planet. But no, that's impossible. No one actually, seriously, feels that way.

137. Why not just watch the show and completely, totally, ignore the fandom?

144. She is pretty damn sexy, even if her ears are all wrong.

142. All Mylar fans are *not* like this, no. This secret makes me facepalm - that is really, really weird. How many people do this - is it just one person in specific? It doesn't matter what pairing it is, if it doesn't click for you, it doesn't click. Plain and simple. -_-

151. ME TOO! :D

161. That makes you a bad fan? That kind of thing tends to make good fanfiction, at least. dwseason4 and 5 are my new personal Doctor Who canon. I'm dead serious, I like it better than the actual show. Bitching can be okay as long as you turn it into something constructive.

182. LOL - same here!! Especially "Claude is not the Doctor with a beard." Agh. And the Doctor and Master are so secret lovers, dammit. Rusty left a scene out somewhere....

185. I kind of agree. I liked it from an aesthetic perspective, but other than that it was depressing as hell, and I felt no connection with any of the characters.

142 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-09-03 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Two different specific people have done one or more of the things I listed in the secret. That said, I've seen more than two Mylar shippers make noises about the pairing being canon, which I find...scary. I think they're usually joking, but sometimes it can be a little hard to tell.

Gokusen manga. I don't remember in which volume the dog first appears, but I think that scene is from volume 7, 8 or 9. The dog is not in the drama version.

153. Didn't 'For Better or for Worse' just end? I could've sworn I saw a "epilogue" strip when I was flipping through the funnies section. (I don't have much of an opinion on it since I don't follow it very well, but good grief I hate 'Family Circus.')

[identity profile] antler-action.livejournal.com 2008-09-03 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Technically it ended, but evidently she now plans to redo the entire thing from the beginning, but with new art and some revisions.
The whole thing promises to be quite nasty, since she based the strip on her real family up to a certain point in time-- and her husband of 20 years recently left her after revealing that he was having an affair with one of her assistants. She'd already gone a bit overboard in using the strip to correct any mistakes she felt her children made in their lives, so it's a long shot that she'll be able to write the husband as a fictional character and not as a voodoo doll.

And many people have already mentioned the Comics Curmudgeon (http://joshreads.com)--he features Family Circus regularly. It's a pretty good antidote for the concentrated unfunny of the Keanes. Although you may wake up one day and discover that you know entirely too much about comic strips that you've never cared about in your life, as I just did when I realized that not only do I know the Family Circus kids' names, I also know the names of the dog and the mother.

Warning: you may find yourself developing unnatural interests in the boring comics that no one ever reads, like Mary Worth, which has captured so many unwilling new readers since the fever of Aldomania. Or Gil Thorp. GIL THORP. I recently spent hours going through archives trying to find the storyline where local ne'er-do-well Marty Moon plays a game of golf against a Benjamin Franklin lookalike. It was dull as dishwater, but I could not stop reading.

133, And I think you're very naive about how strongly some people feel about certain characters.

151, I must be one of the few people who wouldn't do the Joker (I only want him for his socks, seriously, I'll throw the rest back and make a run for it) However TDK Harvey Dent is YUM! I want to climb in his lap and play with that cleft chin... I'm not massively concerned about how much face is there at the time either. (Tommy Lee Jones is perfectly lovely, but if I'm going to have the opportunity to climb in his lap he has to be Agent K or Marshal Gerard)

182, I disagree with the Donna Noble one entirely, Catherine Tate's breasts definitely have hypnotic qualities.

105. This reminds me of this group of Italian kids who went to my high school. They were VERY physically affectionate with each other in a totally unselfconscious way.

I can still clearly remember the day my graduating class was signing up for grad photo time slots at lunch, in the hallway that ran alongside the foyer where all the high school students ate lunch. (So there were more students in the immediate area then there would normally have been.) And a handful of these Italian students ran into each other in the hall in front of the sign-up tables...and they all (three of them guys) greeted each other with loud, enthusiastic joy, hugging and kissing. Not in a sexual way, just planting short smacks on each other.

And the entire foyer just....stared. AGOG. Like, did those guys just...KISS? Did they really just KISS? Shamelessly, casually KISS? OMFGthoseguysjustkissedeachother! (Said guys were either totally oblivious or very good actors, since they didn't seem to notice how long it took several hundred students to stop gawking at them.)

So...yes. I could believe, "they're Italian, it's not subtext." Don't recognise the fandom though, hah. Just saying I believe you.

125. I was SO disillusioned when my 10th grade English teacher said that Romeo and Juliet was nothing but a criticism of people who ignore the boundaries of various social castes. I refuse to believe Shakespeare wrote something so shallow.

(Um. This...is Romeo and Juliet, right? I'm going to feel like a massive idiot if it's not.)

133. There are clear distinctions between characters I merely, "dislike," and characters I viscerally, "hate." Would you prefer some other term for the latter group? "Characters whose deaths make me spontaneously break into cheers and applause," is a tad long. It also tends to get people more upset, and faster. Particularly when the character isn't a villain.

I have to ask, just for the record: do you have the same issue with people saying they, "love" a character?

161. I'd call that, "being a wanky prima donna," myself.

182. The Doctor and the Master are on-again, off-again lovers. This is CANON TRUFAX, I assure you.

183. But now you know; if there's a chance that sexual content may come up, DO NOT EVER REVEAL THAT YOU ARE UNDERAGE. Because I gotta admit, I would feel strange about RPing a sex scene with a 15-year-old, too. But I ALSO know that I was running a porn mailing list at the age of 16-named-23, and it did me no harm whatsoever, IMO.

(I'm not going to defend that particular action though, given the unlikely-but-theoretically-possible legal issues that could come up there.)

125 (OP)

(Anonymous) 2008-09-03 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's Romeo and Juliet lol. I think your English teacher couldn't be more wrong, in fact, that's the exact opposite of what the play is wildly accepted to be about. It's about how stupid those arbitrary boundaries are and I can't imagine how you could miss that. Hence why they do those interracial versions and versions with other stupidly opposed sides who don't even know why they're fighting.

Where be these enemies? Capulet! Montague!
See, what a scourge is laid upon your hate,
That heaven finds means to kill your joys with love.
And I for winking at your discords too
Have lost a brace of kinsmen: all are punish'd.

And the enemies make up and pledge to honour each other's children... now I wonder what your teacher was smoking. Fret naught, Shakespeare knew everything.

112) He's my favorite character, too. And damn that's a pretty picture of him. Ah well, there's always fanfic.

138) He's my fourth favorite out of the five -- behind Jack, Owen and Tosh. So naturally, the two lackeys I liked got killed, such is my luck. I really hope he gets a bit more character development this next season, and, just to be contrary, preferably in a direction that absolutely crushes the fanon version of him.

153) I've found nothing in the funny pages worth reading in the last few years. They've all run out of ideas years ago and are just rehashing the same crap over and over and over again. And my local paper would rather run old Peanut's from the 70's than actually put someone new up. I stick to web comics.

161) I constantly meta what I watch, but that's a huge part of the fun for me. Every canon WTF moment is an opportunity for me to get creative. Nothing excites my imagination more than a great core idea executed poorly. The main thing that spurs me to write fanfic is filling in plotholes and finding motivations to make the characters actions make sense.

162) Bwah? I hope you aren't suggesting that Yaoi OTPers don't believe in True Love, cuz that's what it kind of sounds like.

182) Some of those things are canon! The doctor does bicker with his earlier selves! And Donna's breasts are indeed hypnotic!

Being a die-hard Ianto fan, and a Jack/Ianto shipper, I'd like to say, at least in the defense of those in my particular little rowboat, that my Ianto =/= "fanon" Ianto. I think Jack/Ianto shippers get similar heat to Sylar/Mohinder shippers, ie everyone thinks we're crazy. XD Not all of us are. The majority, however, makes us all look bad. =/
