I've been having bad dreams few nights in a row so let's talk about nightmares. Have you had any lately? Do you have recurring ones? How does one even define a nightmare, is it any unpleasant dream? Share the horror or weirdness!

Last night I dreamed that a family member died, that was awful

Water. If I get near water in my dreams it starts to rise up until it drowns me.

Now I get freaked out going to the beach. :(

Most of my nightmares are just generic stress dreams where I get chased by nameless unseen forces

My recurring dream is driving the car off something. Bridges, cliffs, piers, winding mountainside roads... one time I drove the car out of a plane! I've had it near enough to once a month for over a decade.

I've had a rare recurring dream where I'm trying, very slowly, to crawl across a road. The scenery will sometimes change-one time I could be on a rural road in the middle of nowhere, another time it could be downtown in a big city. But no matter the setting, I'm always trying to crawl across this road.

Then a car starts coming down the road towards me and I obviously try to get across in time. Whenever I have that dream, I always wake up shortly after that, though, so I never know if I make it across okay or not. I'm sure somebody could find some meaning in that somewhere, but yeah.

I had a nightmare last night that I was in my bathroom and there was a daddy long legs with an egg sac on it. They started hatching out and I was panicking trying to find something to kill them.

a long time ago I used to live in a place that I really hated. I've had way too many recurring dreams about being forced to go live there again.

I have bad dreams quite often, 9/10 someone dies in them, often myself which is always pretty weird, but I don't count those as nightmares because they don't have a lasting impact on my waking self. They're more of a 'oh hey, another death dream' than a big deal to me.

My nightmares however leave me too scared to sleep the next evening and in the worst cases I actually can't sleep at all. My episodes of sleep paralysis do this to me, as well as some nightmares I'd rather not remember.

For a funny anecdote for an absolutely horrible nightmare I had where my Night-Hag kept following me the whole time: my dream-self took the route of 'If I can't see her she can't see me' (which oddly worked, dream logic yo), my bf was there in the dream with me and at one point where I saw her coming through a mirror I looked away and my dream-bf said 'oh well that's unpleasant' in the most 'this is a mild inconvenience' voice ever. It tickled me so much I woke up.

It may not sound like a nightmare to other people, but I have a recurring dream where I'm having some confrontation and I'm stammering to the point that I can't talk at all. It's always an awful feeling.

I tend to have (or wake up in the middle of and remember, since I assume I have them and normal dreams even if I don’t remember every night) more nightmares when my feet are cold, so I use a hot water bottle in winter. But I’m a restless sleeper and often kick my blankets off.

I don't have recurring dreams/nightmares themselves, I have recurring places. Different things happen there, but they're always the same places. I have one I've been going to a lot recently, and I don't know why: it's a coastline with an incredibly steep shelf, because the waves in the surf are colossal and that's just where they scoop up to when they crash in. Sometimes I have nice dreams here, sometimes they're bad. It's really weird.

I've had several lately too.

Last night I dreamed I was dating this guy who decided out of nowhere that he wanted to have super rough, violent sex although he knew I wasn't into that (and claimed not to be himself) and when I didn't want to he attempted to rape me, then ended up leaving and going to call his ex for sex and I for some reason was upset by that? (WTF dream me?!) then I ended up talking to this woman about it and there was kind of the vibe that I was interested in her even though I'm not into women in real life. And I had some angry conversations with some people who I acted like I was being totally unreasonable for not wanting to be raped, and I don't even know.

Another where I broke into some celebrity's? (I'm not sure who he was, he wasn't any actual celebrity that I know of, but he was supposed to be famous in the dream) house to use his bathroom and then peed while he stood in the bathroom and we casually had a conversation and he wasn't mad at me for breaking into his house for some reason? (This one probably isn't technically a nightmare but I felt really freaked out by it when I woke up.)

The other day I dreamed I had some kind of disease that had a very low chance of survival and I was freaking out and my family members were like "eh, so you're gonna die, what's the big deal?" and then my dad casually mentioned that there was a treatment that might save me and I got pissed off, like why the fuck didn't you tell me about it before now?! and then everyone started mocking me for wanting to live.

Last week I dreamed that I was walking with my dad and this cop named Sam who was a family friend (who doesn't actually exist in reality) through a field and some other guys were chasing us, and for some reason I ended up killing my dad and Sam by bashing them in the heads with a large rock, and then I freaked out and ran to my parents' house (I still lived there in the dream) and thought "I have to get in touch with Sam, he'll know what to do" and tried calling him and he wasn't answering and then I went to my parents' neighbors across the street's house (in the dream they were somehow related to Sam) to try to find him, and they didn't know where he was either, and then I finally realized that I killed him and I woke up.

I have no idea where any of it came from and I have good relationships with my family so it was all just bizarre.

the specifics are different every dream but I do have frequent dreams where I end up screaming in hysterical anger at someone in the dream, having a full on screaming, crying meltdown. sometimes I also turn violent in the dream and beat the shit out of people who are bothering me.

I haven't had any nightmare but my literal weekly nightmare is that they do away with food stamps and cash assistance and I have nothing to survive on because it's not easy for me to get a job and I get evicted from my mother's home and end up on the streets, eventually raped, assaulted and dead because my family refused to take me in (which they won't because they claim they don't have room). I hate Trump and I hate America.

I used to have very frequent (at least once a week but sometimes more) nightmares. I didn’t have specifically recurring dreams but certain recurring themes were: my family members dying, my family members hurting me and/or being monsters (had those since I toddler), any real life anxiety I was currently having but ghoulishly exaggerated, and weird semi lucid dreams where I would realize I was dreaming and could control myself, and I would always instantly be so terrified I would just scream and rage until I forced myself to wake up

BREXIT. Fucking Brexit. Every night I wake up freaking out about it. Are we going to have enough to ear in a few months? Do we need to stockpile our medicines??

Nobody I know wants it. Even the few acquaintances who voted for it (based on a campaign of lies) have changed their minds. WHY are they pushing this through?????.

I've been having nightmares that involve someone attempting to sexually assault me lately (something that occurred when I was 21). I've never really had dreams relating to it before, not sure why it's happening now. It's not the actual guy in these dreams, it's always someone different. One last night ended with me stabbing the guy in the throat with my keys (specifically my front door key for work). Idk. They're super-vivid right now. It sucks.

Added fun: I also get 'hypnopompic hallucinations' where during the wakeup process I'll see stuff in the room with me. It's ridiculously vivid and clear to the point I'll leap out of bed because there's a scorpion crawling up my bed or someone standing in my doorway. They diasppear in a few blinks but those few blinks are shit scary.

Every once in a while, I have a dream where I have killed some random person (sometimes accidentally, sometimes self defense, once I was serial-killing Harry Potter characters), and there is this moment where dream me is like, "Oh god, not again."

In May in real life I'm taking a big trip to see my favorite band twice, once in Italy and once in Germany. The other night I dreamed I somehow managed to miss the concert in Italy and for some reason wasn't able to make the one in Germany either. Of course it wasn't the worst of nightmares but since I feel totally capable of screwing up the trip in real life it was a bad dream for me.

As for real nightmares where I'm scared they're mostly about Pyramid Head, but I haven't had one for a while.

The one where I'm back with my ex always sucks, because the me in the dream is always stuck in the part where the relationship still seemed good, but there's always this sense of impending doom because actual me knows how everything eventually turned to shit. It's like being the slutty teenager in an 80s slasher movie and the genre-savvy audience at the same time.

When I was a kiddo, like 5yo, I used to have the same dream where I was running away while pulling a cart. All I could see was a black stone floor and I would always have the feeling of falling down before waking up. It was so often the same image just stuck with me through the years and I still wonder what was that about.

Not really a nightmare but it seems like a lot of times when I have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, I get a dream first about having to go to the bathroom and searching for a toilet.

And while they're always different places/toilets they're always super gross and disgusting. Overflowing, full of shit, whatever. And I'm trying my damnedest to find the least gross.

Of course the other problem is that they're usually semi-public in some way. Low partitions, no partitions...people around and talking to me like nothing weird is going on...

And then I wake up and go, "...oh...good. At least I know my bathroom isn't gross!" and go do my business. :)
