141- What's wrong with liking a glorified cartoon? I mean really? And for refrence, it isn't a glorified cartoon. It's just a cartoon flat out. The only thing anime has in common is that it's from Japan, and it's drawn. Other then that, seriously...Naruto's about ninja's fighting epic battle aimed at 13 year old boys, Paradise Kiss is about high fashion a la Vogue (As oppose to Barbie) aimed at teen and early 20 girls. And you can find about a billion other niche genre's in anime.

Again all that says is, hopefully your friends (Rightfully) think less of you for judging something so strongly you know jack shit about.

142- Just looking at the couples there, yeah, her Temari's OOC. D:

163- That' a really cute pic, link to original?

164- If you really wanna cosplay, it's totally possible t do, and do well, while over weight, it just takes a bit more...not so much work, but consideration of what will look good on you, what fabric's to use, etc If you ever wanna bounce off ideas, you can message me? (Mine aren't always the most flattering cause sometimes I just don't give a shit, but I do know how t do it right generally)

167- I'm still trying to figure out why this is a slash oriented thing? Plz to see secret 142. (if that's not your fandom, all the males listed there pretty much have never had any sort of interaction with said female. At all. Period. They fought her, most likely, canon love interest.)

OH MY GOD SO MANY BONES SECRETS LATELY. ;)

102. Cam rules my world; right now she's the best thing about the show... writers better get wise. :P

170. THIS IS TRUE. It's the only way I like Zutara, all dark and twisty and full of loathing. ;)

Aww, damn. I saw this on Saturday night and I was actually kind of looking forward to finding the fandom.

Surely there must be a decent comm with decent reasonable fans somewhere?

132. If you have small enough breasts that you can walk around without needing the scaffolding support that is a bra, then more power to ya. I have bazonga-breasts so that was never an option for me, but I never understood why women with small, perky breasts found it necessary to wear such an uncomfortable garment.

141. *takes deep breath* MEDIUM NOT GENRE. That's like saying you hate all television shows throughout history based on what you've heard about The Hills. Also, I LOL at your super-justification for *gasp* using an image from Naruto. It's like if you touch something from an anime you think you're going to get herpes.

150. I hope you understand that both The Daily Show and The Colbert Report have never been considered by their creators to be unbiased, informative news shows. Their whole point is to lampoon the other "credible" networks that are completely doing it wrong.

152. There's a big difference between "I read about white gold wedding rings in _______ and I think it's really cool so I'll get one," rather than "I'm going to dye my hair purple and stop eating foods that are brown because I want to be more like _______ in this fandom."

155. What do you think I did the entire time I was in graduate school?

170. I'm not in the Avatar fandom but I've heard the Zutara debate and your way actually makes sense.

[identity profile] hobnobofjoy.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
150 - yes, that's the point of the secret. OP has realised the ridiculousness of the 'real news' because the fake news has lampooned it so wonderfully.

109-The quality of the fanfic is always in the fanfic--not the pairing or who likes it. You can write a very original fic about a pairing that everybody writes.

119-LOL!

123-You are already totally not a whiner that I can see!

132-This is totally something that intrigues me about that show, the whole nipple aesthetic. I would never have considered it without it.

134-It's good that you feel that way despite not liking her I think.

164-I don't cosplay, but I'd think the fun of it is that you get to dress up as whoever you want, not only if you weigh the right thing. I'd think it would be a lot more interesting that way--like, you can see different creative things people do to be the character from wherever they start.

170-Aww. He hasn't betrayed everybody exactly. But yeah, I agree with you about the pairing. It could be bad.

172-She's awesome. I wish I'd come across a post by a disabled fan, or a convo between them, about characters and how they relate to them, how they feel about the way they're done etc.

Seconded! JxHQ fandom = love.

I'll admit it - the first time I read a fic with Harley in (it was a Nolanverse one and she wasn't a psychiatrist) I thought she was an OC and just wondered why the author gave her such a silly name. Then I read another one she appeared in, written by a different author, and it slowly dawned... thank you wikipedia for explaining everything! ;)

No one's forcing you to join that comm, just so you know... and why are you surprised about the attitude there? Given that it's highly likely that this show is going to share a huge proportion of its fandom with Robin Hood, and the biggest Robin Hood LJ comm has a mod with a similar attitude which is largely approved of by its members, it seems fairly predictable that there would be similar rules and attitude in the first major Merlin comm to be set up. Frankly, I find the 'fuck off, screaming bratty fangirls' attitude in BOTH communities HUGELY refreshing and would be far LESS involved with both if they were any different.

Go and set up your own Merlin Comm where people can leave meaningless squee, moan about how the bad people are spoiling them after the episode has been out and available online for DONKEYS YEARS and endless, BORING AS HELL review posts about how important their opinions are all over the place so it takes HOURS to wade through it all to find icon, fic and discussion posts. I'm sure you'll be very happy there. Meanwhile, those of us who feel the need for a sane, sensible place to get on with enjoying and talking about our show in, will stick with what we've got, thanks.

I'm just annoyed by fandom's inability to appreciate friendship. It's not just a slash thing, either. You can love someone very deeply and have no sexual feelings for them whatsoever.

I've shipped plenty of weird or non-canon pairings, it's not that, it's just that huge amounts of fandom seem to interpret any relationship as a fucking relationship. Platonic love exists.

109 I think those people are just jealous that their OTP doesn't have as many fans. Sometimes pairings are popular for a good reason.

121: ... What's wrong with liking anime?

138: ... What's wrong with liking manga?

I mean, the only people who will look down on you for this are idiots and the uninformed, and the latter is easily remedied. Idiots aren't worth your time anyway.

141: Animation is just a medium. If it's not usually to your tastes, no problem, but quite a lot of amazing stories have been told through it. No need to hate on the people who like it (especially if they're your friends).

145: Isn't that Kyo? I've actually met him in person a couple of times. He seemed like a very kind and thoughtful person (but this was four years ago).

167: No matter how obscure and improbable a pairing may seem, someone somewhere will laud it as the most perfect and obvious coupling in the canon. Most of the rest of the fandom will disagree. We're not a hive mind, you know.

That said, fandom is mostly about interpretation of canon and "what if". Some people will think, "hm, what if it turns out Character X really is the murderer?" while other will wonder "what if they were all ballet dancers in 18th century Russia?" The beauty of fandom is that you can find both ands of the spectrum and everything in between here!

N!S2: Well even from the start he was completely unlike Harry in the books. We got very little description; thin face, black hair, big, green almond-shaped eyes. They couldn't even get one right.

135. Actually, the Rolo-fandom was up and kicking pretty early on in the series. There were a lot of people who considered themselves Rolo fans and were hoping half to God that he'd last at least over halfway through the series. Unless of course you don't think people who like yandere characters are really people, in which case, er, yeah the fandom wasn't full of people until after his death, just a lot of non-people who liked Rolo for who he is.

Yandere types are not meant to be romantic or heartwarming. The danger of obsession might be a kink and therefore sexy, not that I go for that kind of thing, but it exists. To me, Rolo is a flawed, fucked up, and lulzy character, but that's why I love him. It doesn't need to make sense. (Who takes Geass completely seriously these days, anyway? There's always been an element of wtf in Geass...)

One person's reasons for hating a character could well be the reason another likes him, so there's no real reason for needing to get so heated up about it. I liked how he was mentally vulnerable, that he couldn't do anything completely right; he was a selfish little bastard who wanted to believe that everything he was doing was for Lelouch, even when it was really for himself and for his own peace of mind. It was tragic, because he was manipulated and alone, and yet he believed and tried all the way to the end. He's not a smart character, he was a pawn. He wasn't even meant to be in Geass, but he gained a lot of fans on the way regardless. We knew he was doomed, we could see him digging his own grave, but that made us like him just for that.

Lastly, I'm pretty sure he didn't kill Shirley because he was scared she'd replace him. He killed Shirley because she wanted to help bring Nunnally back, and Nunnaly is the one he really feels most threatened by. It's a brother complex rather than a romantic complex, so while he may have felt slightly threatened by Shirley, it was her promise of saving Nunnally that set him off. It's sort of like Lelouch's complex towards Nunnally reinterpreted. These kinds of bonds are deeply explored in Geass, (Lelouch's jealousy of Suzaku's closeness to Nunnally at the beginning of R2 much? and I don't think throwing in this sort of relationship wasn't entirely unnatural.

Honestly, don't lump all yandere fans into one boat. A lot of yandere characters when handled well can be a hundred times more interesting than Rolo. Don't assume that all of them are quite like him. Let us like who we like. It can't be helped. I respect your opinion though, I just put forward my own. If some people like to get their rocks off to tentacle pr0n I don't say anything even if it squicks me. I let them enjoy their kink. It's nothing my own very good friends haven't said. Just that they don't say it as if everyone should think the way they do.
