101 I hardly ever identify with female characters in any medium, but that's mostly because I'm pretty mentally androgynous gender-wise, and most female characters are either too feminine for me to relate to or they're overcompensating in the other direction.

105 I can totally see that comparison.

115 My gay friend hated Leeron because he's such a horrible stereotype of a gay man, and I have to agree. I hate the way the Japanese view homosexuality sometimes.

116 This is basically exactly how I see this series. I hate the shipping wars surrounding it (almost killed any enjoyment I had left for the series, which was only really awesome at the very beginning anyway).

117 I hate Oasis because they basically destroyed what Creation records was, and because of them nobody will ever care about Ride, or any of the other vastly superior bands on that label.

126 Words cannot express how disgusted I am that some people are apparently only interested in history if they can imagine notable historical figures having sex with each other. I mean, I'm a history major and the closest I ever got to that was my weird crush on Napoleon, but that's not the same as reading the French Revolution and its aftermath through slash goggles. Whatever happened to just being interested in history? Is it really that boring if you don't have a historical slash pairing to fantasize about?
tl;dr yaoi fangirls ruining everything I enjoy once again.

140 That's just as lame, sorry.

141 I grew up watching American cartoons, and I don't think anime is superior. And I don't watch anime series just for the fact that they're anime. I have genres that I'm interested in, like for example, science fiction in general. And it just so happens that along with all the book and live action series, sci-fi anime exists. If something like Legend of Galactic Heroes existed in American live action I would still think it's the greatest thing ever.

144 But he's such a small dude. It's like every character he plays is overcompensating for that fact.

150 Every American newspaper is owned by a corporation except two -- The New York Times and the Washington Post. (LA Times used to be independent until it got bought out by the Chicago Tribune). There's really no difference between cable news and newspapers. Enjoy your McNews.

I don't get it either. It's like some people can't look at something without sex and romance being invovled. Everybody has to be fucking somebody. It's lame.

109. ...I know JUST how you feel, OP. ;_; I get that a lot. Heck, sometimes even one of my friends has to keep reminding me that they're SO sick of said pairing that I still adore. It just makes me kind of ashamed sometimes cause generally people want more variety and I'm still hopelessly attached to what's probably the most prominent pairing in the fandom. And usually I'm not afraid to show it.

I'll try to remember it's for my enjoyment, too. It's hard sometimes. I wish other people's opinions didn't affect me so much. Good luck to you in that respect too, OP~!

110. ...After all these years, I do still love that pairing. I'll have to track down that video, now. >>;

Re: 116

I mean, seriously. I like Sheryl a lot as a character. It's just that I 'side with' Ranka for a variety of reasons. That doesn't mean I want bad shit happening to Sheryl.

Like whenever she faints, I have a friend who's like, 'Oh, look, she's dying. Bet that makes you happy, because now the way will be clear for Ranka!' Um ... wat?

(Although quite honestly, Alto's a douchebag so the whole thing is moot.)

[identity profile] kiraqueen.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
120. Fuck yes, Kerowyn. I love that book; it's by far my favorite of Lackey's work.

129. I don't know about her but if I had carrots from Johnny Depp I'd be quite happy. :D

137. I've been on both sides of long-running fandom stuff before, and from my experience almost nobody hates on the kind of newbie you are.

158. Somebody write this. It'd be amazing.

164. I won't lie and say there aren't people on the internet who don't appreciate heavier cosplayers. There's people on the internet who don't appreciate cosplayers unless they look like plastic surgery goddesses and even then they'll hate them for minor physical flaws. That shit is NOT OK, though. I encourage you to try anyway. There aren't too many but there are overweight characters out there. Skinny ladies or skinny gents will never be able to pull them off, so do one and rock the socks off everybody. (Two of my very favorite cosplays ever are both done by heavy people, one as Porco Rosso and the other as the Witch of the Waste.)

175. You lived with Gaiman as a neighbor?! You lucky, lucky person. (As much as I love his books, I don't think I'd love them quite as much if I didn't adore Gaiman himself from the one signing I went to and reading his blog.)

164

[identity profile] oceanica.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
164 - Someone who's overweight doesn't even necessarily have to play an OVERWEIGHT character, just maybe one that doesn't wear extremely revealing clothing. Look a little, and there are plenty of characters out there who wear flowy or concealing clothing, and that makes hiding extra pounds easy.

109 - Hey, popular ships are popular for a reason, and sometimes it's because they really just are that bloody awesome/obvious/sexy.

121 - Okay, step one to not being so fucking ashamed of yourself? Delete 'weeaboo' from your vocabulary. Seriously. Start with that. And then accept that you know what? There are really not a lot of people who walk around with cat ears on. They are the few and the really crazy. Most anime fans are actually pretty bloody normal people.

141 - Wow, judgmental there, ain'tcha?

164 - I'm overweight, and I cosplay, and I've gotten nothing but compliments about it. Basically, it's just like regular dressing -- you have to find the cosplays that suit you. If you're overweight, don't cosplay characters that wear skimpy clothing. Shop around a little for characters who stay more covered, or better yet wear loose, flowing clothing, and you'll find cosplays that you can pull off just fine. Best is cosplaying male characters -- they tend to be less fanservice-y and wear more clothes. (Except for Kamina. He's special)

I wasn't trying to equate all anime fans with the "weeaboo" type. I was saying that I secretly idolize the weeaboos because they are apparently fearless, as in not afraid for everyone know they watch a ton of anime. Meanwhile I can't even listen to an anime soundtrack in my own car without being embarrassed.

I used the extreme example on purpose.

141. See, saying it's a "glorified cartoon" assumes that all cartoons are bad. Animation is a medium, and there's both good and bad in it just like any other. 112. DUDE. That's exactly why I had to stop watching regularly, too. And I don't know about you, but for me it wasn't "funny" hypochondria, but involved a lot of anxiety and fear of dying. The one full-blown panic attack I've ever had occurred while watching House, and although the root anxiety was due to grad school, I'm sure the show just set the panic in motion. *shudder* (I still watch it on occasion, though I try to fast-forward through the PotW stuff and just get the good banter.)

Oh, no. Definitely not "funny" hypochondria. The first episode I ever watched involved some kid who developed this fatal disease because he went into this old house and inhaled some kind of a...spore I think. Freaked me the hell out - and it continued to. So I stopped. I do miss the banter, though. :(

126 Who doesn't ship Hamilton with, oh, Jefferson. Or Madison, who left Hamilton for Jefferson! Or Jefferson and Adams, who talked about each other on their death bed? Seriously, every time I study/teach the Federalist period, all I can think about is damn, internet grudge matches have nothing on the ol' founding fathers! (ps, check out yuletide, there's some quite good historical rps over there) But anything that makes people get into American History is a big yay in my book!

134 You don't have to like someone to not wish them ill. I'm really glad she seems to be getting help and working and getting her shit together after spending a year crying for help that was waaay too long in coming.

141 What's the matter with being a glorified cartoon? Are you one of those "animation is only for children" types? Because that's pretty tired and lame.

150 I think this is a repeat but I'll still say: good for you! Cable news has really ruined journalism in this country. It's a mess.

164 The more secrets there are about elitist cosplayers and people who don't cosplay because of elitist cosplayers, the more I wonder why anyone cosplays at all. It just seems like a horrible pit of voles, like putting yourself on "hot or not".

167 Do you feel the same way about people who ship non-canon heterosexual ships? And no, I think fandom isn't about "appreciating things for what they are" mostly because none of us can agree on what any canon "is." People like different parts of canons. Also, often all that shipping means is that you like the interaction between two characters, and given our culture, romantic relationships are given primacy over platonic ones, so it's hard to talk about someone's friend being really important to them.

170 Did he really betray Mai? I mean, he ditched her to run off with the Avatar but I'm not sure that really counts as a betrayal.

176 When you are in a small fandom, or a fan of a small pairing, you really do have a responsibility to go out and review everything and talk to people about it. The few people that actually write Rymon fics, unless they're just baffling, I review them all—and I'm lucky because since I've been in fandom the few that have been written have been really great. So boo on those people. But I don't think it's a bad thing to go back to those comments or emails begging for more and say, "I know it's been a long time, but here's more!"

@wooooah: You're doing it wrong. There are plenty of logical reasons to find her dangerous, but that sort of talk just drums up sympathy for her, and in an election this close we really can't afford that sort of thing.

170 - I do not think that breaking up with her via text message note is a betrayal, but then it has been a good few years since I was a teenager, sooo... a matter of perspective. Mai was suitably pissed at him, anyway, but still stuck up for Azula when the time came, so I am thinking that she didn't think it was a betrayal either.

126 - omg. THAT WAS MY APUS HISTORY BOOK. (I actually kinda liked it, but I liked our Degler text better.) Also, Hamilton/Jefferson is practically canon.

142 - your font is awesome.

170 - THIS. To which I put out a call for Zutara darkfic. C'mon people, rec me here. (Keep in mind, I have been reading a lot of fic that is publishable-as far as writing quality goes- so my standards are ridiculously highImage (http://dragcave.net/viewdragon/Ijec))

I ship some of the most popular pairings in some fandoms, and trust me, I always love more fic from different authors. Cos the thing is, while we do have TONS of X/Y already, if it's ridiculously popular? We probably have a bunch of fanbrat crap. So adding your GOOD X/Y fic will be most appreciated :D
