105. I disagree about McKay not being interesting or funny - I love him, personally. But I do agree 110% about not being able to stand McShep. People, they're friends. Not lovers. It ain't rocket science. Not that I'm saying "THERE MUST BE A CANON ATTRACTION FOR IT TO BE A LEGITIMATE SHIP," but McSheppers who act like it's canon or that people who don't ship it are blasphemers? Are hilarious.

128. Blah blah blah I'm better than you because I'm married blah blah blah. Get off your high horse before you fall down and paralyze yourself.

144. Exact opposite for me! I'm hopelessly devoted to my pairings, and people who "multi-ship" are incomprehensible to me.

148. Too bad for you. You've missed out on some good secrets.

Re: 105

[identity profile] darsynia.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel for you (not sarcasm) with the not standing McShep. It's gotta be tough to love the characters and to enjoy the amazing canon friendship they have but not see it as romantic, because even the genfic friendship pieces a lot of people write of those two is, a lot of times, pre-slash in disguise.

I have always maintained that part of why I love the pairing so much is because I love the strict canon of their friendship. Sure, I indulge in tinhatting every so often, because I have a lot of backup, and it's fun to extrapolate, but at the heart of the show, that friendship is just amazing, and I'm so, so grateful it's there in its purest form. It's not often that someone who ships something can say that if you strip away any idea of subtext, the truth of the characters' platonic love will still shine through.

109 - Don't really read House secrets as I don't care, but god, can we at least get a new picture instead of the same screen shot over and over again. /bitchiness.

135 - Em, do any Americans really talk like that? Unless they watch a lot of British tv shows, I always thought they were more UK slang words. Least that's the impression I get when my American friends like to repeat the word bloody over and over again when I say it. And I don't think any have ever used the word mate...

135

[identity profile] jaclynhyde.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's what the secret is saying--that when non-Americans write fanfic for American media, they incorrectly use their own slang. Because Americans never do that for non-American media.

IIFC, there was a cheat that let you put objects wherever in 1&2, so that tiles didn't count. That's what I used, obsessively. It's kind of annoying when things aren't... strait...

[identity profile] jaclynhyde.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
103. Everyone's gay for Cuddy.
107. He doesn't have a canon (a)sexuality. And what does that have to do with kiddy personalities? And where's the canon gay? I'm a slasher myself, but it's not canon.
114. It's all about the Schumann/Brahms/Clara, man.
122. Heeeee.
127. This is why we need to obsessively tag posts with fandoms! [twitch]
135. Generalize much? I've seen about the same number of Americans fucking up non-American slang (see: Harry Potter fandom) than the other way around (a few more Americans, actually, but I read a lot of British fandoms).
144. I've seen it referring to the only ship you'll stick those characters in, or just as shorthand for I LOVE THIS PAIRING. If a person isn't in a lot of fandoms, though, I can see having only one couple you actively ship.
153. XDDDD That is wonderful.
163. ...just tell them you're not interested?
164. I barely play the Sims and I'm excited.
Not!Secret 1: And...?
Not!Secret 2: Because people don't have to like canon ships.

AH-HAHAHAHA!!

I call troll. Or else blindness.

I can understand being annoyed about people putting their own country's slang into characters' mouths, but damn, you think American fanbrats don't do that to all characters from any other country ever?

107. ILU.

122. LOL this is glorious. Not laughing at you, laughing at Twilight.

144. I don't get it either. I usually say OTP for something I ship harder than my usual ships. XD

N!S 2: Oh, IDK, because they have the right to support things they like? *not an avatar fan but seriously, the "you can't ship this because THIS is canon" argument is ridiculous*

[identity profile] xxlithiumflower.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
101. I don't really do the fandom thing for Gankutsuou, but you're not alone in totally adoring it! Actually I've been meaning to rewatch it lately, but I keep getting talked out of it...

105, 135

[identity profile] allyndra.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
105. I don't have any problem with you disliking the character of Rodney McKay or the McShep pairing, but I think you're hugely wrong about Rodney being a not-funny, not-handsome, not-interesting Mary Sue. It is possible for you to not be attracted to him or interested in him without everyone else being wrong wrong wrong. (I get that the pairing is so prevalent that it might bug someone who dislikes it, but accept that these things are a matter of your opinion and not absolutes.)

135. It would be going too far to say I "can't stand it," but seeing American characters speaking in Britishisms jars me right out of a story. I find myself wanting to offer my services to Americanize fics. Often they're excellent, but I find it so distancing when an American character uses "yeah?" as a tag question or puts the kettle on.

But then I think of all the crappy Harry Potter fic I've read by Americans, and a lot of it made no effort at all. So you can't really say "We try to get your slang right," about everyone. Or even most authors.

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Er. What do Americans call kettles, then? O_o

By the way, I think everything is okay in narration. Dialogue... (or internal dialogue) that's different. (But then, I'm ESL so I'm too happy if I can catch an Americanism/Britishism to be bothered by it. Then again, almost all of my fandoms are anime where these are not really important.)

101. I'LL FANGIRL WITH YOU WHOEVER YOU ARE.

Seriously, it is one of the best anime out there in terms of storytelling and visuals and character developement. That's probably why no one talks about it.

164. THIS IS NOW THE REASON I AM BUYING THAT. SERIOUSLY.

101

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree about the character development and storytelling part... :/ That huge gaping hole in the Count's characterization after Franz's death was incredibly irritating (though apparently doesn't bother anyone else) and after that episode the storytelling failed faster than one can say Monte Cristo. It somehow get back to its feet later, but... eh.

Nevertheless, it's a great anime, and I'm with the OP that no anime has ever affected me the same way as this one did. (It broke my heart, plain and simple.)
