Actually, the fandom has embraced the few strong female characters that have been presented on the show. Ellen was perhaps the only one that appeared in more than one episode, but others include Sarah (Provenance), Office Kathleen (The Benders), Meg (demon and human), Kat (Asylum), Layla (Faith), and the batshit crazy mom from The Kids Are Alright. The problem is that, for the most part, the female characters that appear in multiple episodes are not well-conceived or are poorly executed. Bela was a walking cliche and was meant to be sympathetic after doing unforgivable things. That is why most of the people I know hated her, not simply because she was female. The format of the show doesn't lend well to regular civilian interaction, but if they could find a way to add a strong female character that fit with the show, most fans would support it wholeheartedly.

If you hadn't said you shipped Maiko, I would have sworn I wrote this in my sleep. I don't even ship Zutara, and I used to ship Kataang...and I hate the way it was executed. But lord, the minute I say that, or admit that I was largely dissatisfied with the way S3 went (not just the shipping)--I'm suddenly a bitter Zutarian. Wtf, fandom.

Kataangers--by and large, you've been an ok fandom--but the ship vindication is bringing all the wankers outta the woodworks, whether or not you see it. Same goes for Maiko. The wanking is making you guys look more like Anti-Zutara rather than pro-anything.

Zutara--you have a history of loud, obnoxious crazies working against you. Naturally, the canon is going to make the Kataangers and Maiko folks feel vindicated--you can thank the rabid fanbrats for that.

I think the problem especially with a lot of the Kataangers is that there is a need to still defend the ship - even more so now I think because of the utter post-finale hatred towards it which seems to have taken on a life of its own and extends to not just the ship, but the shippers, the creators, and the characters.

I think the blood in the water would have been a lot less if the Zutarian community had just gracefully said: "Congrats, you won canon." and then blissfully went about celebrating the love of their ship not by tearing down other ships and the show, but by just enjoying their ship. Unfortunately it seems the more vocal ones want to constantly shove it in the faces of rival shippers about how they are supposedly superior to everyone else and anyone who cannot grasp that is a pedo-shipping loser.

Is that any reason for Kataangers to troll Zutarian sites and fan work and pick fights and make assholes of themselves - no, of course not. But the anger and resentment didn't come from nowhere. And anger and resentment breeds hostility and bad behavior. And both sides seem to have that down well.
