What are some of your favorite podcasts

Or new ones you are listening to?

Anyone with an even vague interest in Dolly Parton should listen to Dolly Parton's America.

For a lesser known comedy podcast, listen to Do Go On.

Last weekend I came across Aasif Mandvi's Lost at the Smithsonian podcast and binged on that. He spends each episode focusing on a different object featured or stored in said museum, and there's a lot of discussion about the history surrounding the item in question, and its impact on people and the culture in general and all that sort of thing. There was a particularly fascinating and moving episode focusing on Jose Feliciano (a guitar of his is part of the museum) that I quite enjoyed, but all the episodes are pretty interesting in general.

And at 10 episodes that last around 30 minutes or so each, it's a pretty quick run-through as well :). Just a fun little trip through pop culture.

I really only have two I listen to on a regular basis: True Crime Garage and True Crime All the Time. The others I liked either ended or I stopped listening because the hosts did something that really rubbed me the wrong way. And I'm super picky about what I like so I haven't found many that fit the criteria I want in a podcast.

What are your least favorite heel-face or face-heel turns?

(Anonymous) 2019-12-06 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Meaning villains turning good guy or good guy turning villains.

What are your favorites?
philstar22: (Doctor Missy)

Rumple's revolving door on Once Upon a Time. Actually all the turns on Once, but Rumple's was the worst since we were supposed to remain sympathetic to him after he went back to evil over and over again.

The movie version of Loki's turn was good, but now they are writing it so that it is canon that he never joined Thanos willingly and was brainwashed. That's stupid and ruins his arc and the character.

Draco's on Harry Potter. And Snape's. Honestly. They were both small time bullies, and we were supposed to overlook that they never actually felt bad about that part just because they stopped being on the side of Voldemort. Just no.

Favorites: Darth Vader, Missy on Doctor Who, Nebula, Sauron (turning evil journey), Willow on Buffy (I know some people don't like it, but her story worked for me except for Kennedy), Spike on Buffy (I liked that he chose to get his soul back and chose redemption, unlike Angel), Cara Mason on Legend of the Seeker

Game of Thrones had so many great potential ones but they ruined most in season 8. So those are all the worst.

Arthas was a great turn from hero to villain.

In Suikoden V, I was definitely not a fan of Euram Barows' recruitment scene. There are clues he isn't exactly evil, but they're easily missable if you aren't looking for them. And considering how much time he spends trying to fuck with the prince because of some misguided rage (often in hilarious ways), you would think he'd get a halfway decent recruitment scene. Instead, it's 3 steps: 1) Euram blames prince for personal losses, 2) Runs off crying after his sister orders him to stop acting like a little bitch, 3) is 100% normal when you catch up with him and stays that way for the rest of the game. Sure, it's because he was having a conversation with his mom, but we have NO idea what was said. The dude starts off as a complete assclown, and there's no believable transition to what he ends up being.

(I am disappoint... therefore, I fic...)

My least favorites are any face-heel turn where the character is a clear-cut good guy, and then a sequel comes out where they either switch sides or reveal they were evil all along. It bums me out and makes me feel like it was never planned, that the writers decided they just didn't like the character so why not turn them into a bad guy.

The earliest example I remember of it was in the old Nickelodeon show The Secret World of Alex Mack. There was this popular guy Alex had a crush on since season 1 and he was always portrayed as a nice guy with bad taste in girlfriends, but then in the last season they suddenly decided to give Alex a boyfriend, so they made her crush steal photos she took and pass them off as his own, just so she could make a big speech about how she'd misjudged him all these years and get over him. I wasn't super attached to his character, but it still felt like such a disservice to the way he'd been written up till then that it made me sad.

Stone Cold Steve Austin's heel turn at WrestleMania X- 7. Hated it, hated it, hated it.

You know what, not even going anon on this one, I'll always own this opinion.

Weekend Plans?

What is everyone doing?

My niece's birthday party is tomorrow so I will be helping out with that. She will be one! Hopefully Sunday I can just be left alone. I am so sick of holidays. :|

There's a Thank-God-It's-Over NaNoWriMo Wrap-Up party tomorrow so I guess I'll muster the will to get up and get out and and attend it? Other than that, I'll probably stay curled up with a giant Toothless plushie.
(Best wishes to you to get through the holidays. I wish I could just have the time off but cancel all the festivities.)

Lots of sleep since I have a migraine. Need to do job applications. If the headache goes away, sorting through some music. If it sticks around, probably reading top ten lists. Also trolling flight rising because my obsession is back. Spent several hours on there today.

Had a really rough week so just relaxing. I don't have any specific plans right now because every time I say I'm going to do XYZ, I never end up doing it and then feel bad that I didn't (even if it's something completely trivial and meaningless) so I'm just going to go with it and see what comes up/see what I feel like doing. Sleep is definitely a priority, though, and soon. I've gotten very little this week and I know that's definitely a factor in how awful I'm feeling right now.

Otherwise, laundry & sleep & watching movies.

I just need to talk about this (more sad than ranting/angry)

(Anonymous) 2019-12-07 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
So my mom used to be fairly conservative, my dad was really liberal. As they've gotten older they've started to basically switch roles...my mom now considers herself "very liberal" and my dad has started to call himself conservative.

I had a conversation with him tonight that was super upsetting, and it's not just a "oh, we disagree about policies" kind of thing. We spent close to an hour going back and forth about healthcare and his final position is that alcoholics and drug addicts don't deserve healthcare and that certain medical procedures shouldn't be available to older people because "they're just going to die soon anyway" and it would raise the price of his insurance. I mean, he even prefaced that with "you're not gonna like this" and "this probably makes me a nazi" so I feel like on some level even he realizes how horrible it sounded. There were different variations of how some people basically just aren't worthy of life and don't "deserve" it and a "well, if I were old and dying I wouldn't bother trying to live longer". Okay, but you don't get to make that choice for other people. Besides, what about their families? What about YOUR family? How do you think it makes me feel that you would rather die than do what you could to try to have more time with us?

It's just so upsetting because I don't know who the hell this guy is. The stuff he was saying was just so cruel and completely lacking in empathy. This is not who he is, and this happened seemingly overnight. We're both pretty into politics so we talk about this kind of stuff all the time, and literally just a couple days ago he wasn't saying this stuff.

It's just so...WTF. I know someone who took her husband to the doctor because his personality completely changed and she knew something wasn't right with him, and he ended up having a brain tumor and dying not long after. When I remembered that situation I called my mom really upset and reminded her of it (she also knew the people in that situation) and said maybe we need to get him checked out because even though he's contrary by nature and likes to debate and will usually take the opposite position as you on any topic, it's never been THIS extreme before and it really worries me.

I don't know why I'm posting this but...thanks for listening to whoever reads this.
