God, I would love that. If there was a Black cosplayers comm on LJ, I would die of happy.

I hate how Black people are "not supposed to enjoy things like cosplay" or else we're "acting White", which makes NO DAMN SENSE. Sadly, it's the other Black people who are the ones saying shit like that.

My family and RL friends would hang there heads in shame if they knew I was even interested. *siiiigh*

101: I don't think it matters. At least here in Sweden nobody cares - One of our best (http://jon.aslund.org/bilder/2006-10-13_15-uppcon-07/dsc_0897.jpg) cosplayers are dark-skinned (couldn't find a better pic, but that's Lulu from FFX, a very pale character) - as long as you get the hair right.

124: Well, subtext is fun, but if the show is bad, I don't care what sort of tricks the creators try. If I love a show, the story and characters have to be good.

Also, I don't see every instance of possible relationship between two male characters as "catering" to anybody. Sometimes it's just part of the story.

131: Shouldn't it be the other way around? The way fandom treats Phoenix made you hate the fandom?

Seriously, I will never understand why people allow their likes and dislikes to be decided by people whose opinions they don't respect (exceptions made for when these people nevertheless makes you see/understand thing you haven't previously realised).

137: Be that as it may; people tend to write fiction about things that do not occur in canon, making canon couples in general fairly unpopular (it's already been done in canon, and probably better than any fan could). Also, the majority of the people who plays the game will ship it - the slash/yaoi fandoms for video games are very small part of the fandom for any particular video game.

139: Those books are absolute rubbish, and they have a lot more fandom than they deserve...

150: I make exceptions for teenagers, though. Most of them grow out of it.

I really think the issue of skin color and cosplay is ridiculous. The sad thing is that there are cosplayers out there who firmly believe that if you cosplay a character, you have to become the character in all aspects, skin tones included.

I've actually been told by people that I'm not light enough to cosplay certain characters, that I should maybe invest on buying power of light foundation to make myself paler... I'm white, but I'm italian so I have dark tones in my skin. I was so put off by the statements, but tried to ignore them. In the end, I just thought, "Screw them. I'm not putting make-up on to lighten myself up. That's horrible!"

My point is, the elitest can shut up. Do what you like and don't let anyone put you down otherwise.

I was all for cosplaying back in the day until I stumbled upon several threads at some cosplay forums where almost everyone agreed that people needed to wear heavy makeup that lightened their skin if they were dark-skinned and cosplaying light-skinned characters.

That pretty much made me change my mind in an instant. After seeing all these replies, however, I'm starting to feel so much better about cosplaying whoever.

101. Cosplay whoever you want. Just because you weren't born with the same skintone as a given character doesn't mean you can't play him or her perfectly. People crossplay all the time, or play characters with different body types or facial features. I say be whoever you want to be.

106. Well, I don't think she's the perfect woman (mostly as I don't think there IS any single perfect woman, or perfect man, for that matter), but I do love Sally. She's a wonderful character.

108. As someone who has an unusual fondness for outerwear-style vest and a huge Silent Hill fan, I am required to ask - WHERE?! I want one too! :D

124. What are these series with strong yaoi fanservice that you speak of? Sometimes, I want nothing more than some eyecandy, and a lot of actual yaoi series are just a little too brainless for me to get into.

141. They're more confident and outspoken than arrogant, really. I also think they're hilarious far more often than not, but that's of course just my opinion. I think you really have to be obsessed with gaming to enjoy PA on a regular basis. If you're not, select comics can still be funny, but their hit to miss ratio will definitely suffer.

101. Cosplay whoever you want to cosplay. I mean, hell, I've cosplayed a guy despite being 5'3" and having boobs and no one really cared. And if anyone gives you crap about it, that's their problem, not yours.

NS!4. Those covers are really pretty -- much nicer than the versions I've seen. And I'd support you in the wanting movies thing, but then I nearly always end up being dissatisfied with movie versions of books I like.

131. Seriously? It's a tad beyond lame to allow other people's opinions and takes on something shape your own. If you liked the character before, why not just go back and play the actual games? When I'm not fond of what a certain part of fandom does with a character I like? I find another pool to play in with people who see things more along my views, and keep my own interpretations above all else.

Don't hate the game, hate the player. Ha!

101) Aw... cosplay them! Don't let your self-consciousness get you down. Just do it.

124) With the sole exception of Torchwood, which is just plain all over randy, I avoid any show that panders too much to slash fangirls. I always feel like they are just hitting me over the head with a "you must love me now" hammer. No, I love shows based on their gen assets, then I add in the ship. I find canon true love relationships stifling to my imagination.

125) Zuko had a much more dramatic character arc than Aang. Once Aang accepted that he needed to do something, he pretty much stayed the course. Sometimes I wish Aang had been allowed to grieve a bit more for the world that he lost, but then again this was a kids show, and having the good guys be dark and broody might have been a bit much.

135) You know, the important thing was getting to the polls and voting for the person you felt best about. No need to geek out over politics and polls.

141) Their humor is pretty much confined to people who are into console and PC gaming exclusively.

pffft, Phoenix is one of the least stereotypical heroes I've seen, hands down, all the way down to his character design. Someone like Apollo (who is irrefutably adorable and eager-to-please) is a lot more typical.

Part of the reason why I always loved Phoenix, though. :p Even if he's not so hot or perfect and he's kind of naive dork. Part of the charm.
