I think American Girl's pink-haired doll looks so wrong. It's like her hair was dyed too darkly and the color flattens out her features.

Oh yuck! I just looked her up to see what you were talking about, and it's super unflattering, even for a doll.

I'm a Star Wars fans, but the Original Trilogy characters were no more amazingly deep and complex than any of the newer characters. They were archetypes mostly. There was a lot of room left to go different directions with them, and I don't think either the EU or the sequel interpretations of them were wrong. I also think fans hold them up too high on pedestals as sacrosanct. Yes, the OT was great, but it wasn't great because it had deep characters. It was a movie that took archetypal characters of the traditional mythic journey and told a great science fiction (with fantasy elements) story with them. Han, Luke, Leia, and even Vader aren't as amazing and complex as you remember.

I'd never say this to one of those OT fans, though. I will debate them. But calling the precious characters that I really do myself love into question would probably get me thrown out of the fandom.

You're correct. And a big reason is that the OG was never intended to be more than a one-off summer fun movie, and literally no one had any idea it was going to become a major cultural entity.

idk, I think archetypes gain depth through experience, which is what makes them feel different than other characters with the same formation. And I think treating them as if they are pre-plot in sequels, when they should have a post-plot interiority means that a writer doesn't actually understand archetypes in general, or these archetypes in particular. And the sequel trilogy did NOT give Luke or Han that post-plot interiority, though I think that mattered less, or not at all lol, for Han. (And I'm not talking about straight consistency, I mean the idea that the previous events have acted on the character in such a way as to make them intelligible in the new media). I think Leia has the straightest narrative path so that her position in the sequel trilogy makes sense. I think understanding Luke's position needs so much audience work that I'm not surprised people, including me, didn't like it (and I actually think the problem is that Luke is SO archetypal and his journey is SO conventional. I don't have a problem with deconstructing that. But I think if a character has learned and acted on the belief that ~no one is truly bad if they're family~ and he at one point decided to like disbelieve that then....I need more information lmao.)

Can't speak to the EU at all.

Mind you, this has always been a issue. Ask any classicist about whether characters you see in the Iliad are the same as those in the Odyssey or those in the Aeneid. Does Sophocles' Oedipus trilogy have a consistent portrait of Oedipus or Antigone or is their narrative purpose so different that the characters themselves are different? It's such an old question even for archetypes so I don't blame people for asking it.

I have a huge, HUGE squick for the fluid inside the mouth (I can't even say certain words or just typing this will set off my gag reflex, so please forgive the ridiculous substitution speak) and the act of expelling it. The reason I haven't seen the movie the Breakfast Club is because the only time I ever saw a single clip of it, a character was expelling his gum* into the air with his mouth and catching it, and that's all I can associate with that film. I can't think about anything else about the movie without gagging really badly, and there's no way I can ever even try to watch it. And sometimes I wonder how it got so popular if there's such a disgusting scene in it. My squick might be overly extreme, but there's tons of people who think it's gross in general. Uuuuuugh. Don't think about it don't think about it don't think about it don't think

*At least I'm choosing to believe it was gum and not just the fluid. If it was just the fluid, for god's sake, DON'T TELL ME.

I'm really annoyed whenever Netflix gets a license for something older on their platform or adapt something and there's this new wave of fans that act like it's entirely new when it's not. It's had an established fanbase for years and they basically start pushing out the older fans instead of joining them. We're starting to see this with A:TLA, we saw it with The Witcher (I've read some of the books and I'm really big into the video games), there's plenty of older anime.

I feel like it's petty to be annoyed about it and really, it is. But it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth when instead of joining a fandom they basically create a new one and ignore the older fanbase and their established fanon and work. If this makes any sense at all. Basically it's the "my town now" meme.

I find ALL the canon relationships (friendship, rivalry, romance) in my fandom interesting, which is very rare. The tv show ended a few years ago and now it seems like the fandom prefers to focus on crack ships (characters who never interacted with each other...but are both attractive)... I'm kind of sad and frustrated about it.

Everyone cover their virgin ears

I don't like most fancasts and most fanmixes.

Fancasts because a lot of people's choices are typecast shit, yes, Actor A was great in B role, but that doesn't mean I want to see him again in basically the same thing. It's a lot more fun when people choose lesser-known or unknown people. (Though yes, I admit, once in a while, a famous person is perfect for a role. I just don't want to see 75% of the LoTR cast being applied to every damn fandom.)

Fanmixes because they're usually about a character or a pairing, and when I read the lyrics, I don't see much of a connection, if there is one at all. Or it's a song that is better suited to a different character/pairing. Maybe I'm just picky though. When I listen to a song that reminds me of something in a story, I want to make it represents it well, or at least doesn't have a lot of strikes against it.

I'm bi and I get really fucking annoyed with the biphobia in my fandom (shit like "eew vomit keep ur disgusting het ships away from me"), and the homophobic insistence that certain characters MUST be gay because Why Else Would They Act Like That. It's exhausting and almost always comes from people claiming to be ~woke~.

I've made a similar secret before so it's redundant to make another, but I just want for a pairing I ship to end up together and happy in the end for once. That's literally never happened for any of my ships. Either one or both of them dies, or they end up apart (possibly with one of them ending up with a character I hate, or there's some giant drama between them and they end up never speaking to or seeing each other again, or they end up in different countries/dimensions, or some combination of those things). Or they end up apart and/or on horrible terms and then one/both of them die(s). It's just frustrating.

I mean, a lot of them are M/M so I guess I shouldn't expect them to end up together, but even the het ships I ship are always ones that were never intended to be romantically involved. Those are the ones that are most interesting to me, though...the ones the canon puts together are always so boring to me.

Meh.

Just because a gay story was written by a gay person doesn't mean it's a good story with zero problematic gay tropes.

We can't talk about that because we. must. support. gay. creators.

Whenever someone mentions an age gap ship on here, I just imagine some twisted vigilante trying to break them up. The results would be both horrifying and hilarious.

I'm not really into WoLxNPC ships in FFXIV, probably because I only have any attachment to my own WoL and he's married, but I think it's really, really cute that the Leveilleur twins are written in a way that makes it seem like they both have just. Heart-rending crushes on the WoL, haha. It makes me want to run up one or two alts to explore that dynamic...

I absolutely fucking loathe how prevalent "ambiguously brown with vitiligo" is in fan character design. Vitiligo isn't a "charm point" for your most certainly white uwu-soft-boi tastes, you don't get Woke Points for it and as someone who ACTUALLY HAS IT, every time I see it I feel all the more conspicuous and objectified. STOP.

For years I feared I was low-key misogynistic or something because even though I ship het ships, when I look for fic it's practically always for my slash ships.

Then I read this one webcomic, Check Please!, where the protagonist is in love with the captain of his hockey team and it's obvious they're going to end up together. While they were in the will-they-won't-they phase of the story I would happily devour any fic where they got together, but as soon as the ship became officially canon I started ignoring the fics that focused on them and going for the ones that focused on any other ship.

Good news, everyone! Turns out I'm not "low-key misogynistic or something" (at least in this instance), I just have no interest in reading fics about canon ships and most of the het couples I ship end up being canon, while the slash ones mostly don't. That's why most of the fic I read is slash!

It really annoys me that Bernadette on The Big Bang Theory had kids. I know in real life women do change their mind about having children and that's fine, but Bernadette rarely talked about her kids like they were a joy. Instead, she complained about what a pain it was raising them and how they had ruined her body and just generally came across as very bitter about motherhood. Then she had the audacity to act holier than thou to Penny because Penny would never know how it fulfilling motherhood felt.

I ship Sesshoumaru x Rin and I don't see what the big deal is about it, especially here. He wasn't grooming her the way real-life predators do. He literally just helped a little girl for a certain amount of time and developed a less callous view of humanity.
