Actually, while it's going to suck when she dies, I'm kind of looking forward to seeing how they do it. She's had her Get Out of Cancer Free card, and I really do want to see how they'll both deal with it.

What does "he should stay who he was" mean? He's been ten wildly different guys. Regenerating with darker skin does change the character any more than regenerating with a Scottish accent or a liking for long floppy scarves did.

The Doctor changes. Yes it's sad, but it's also kind of the point.
