118. Alot of people do actually! It's easy to see where they get it, and it's very possible Jared has a one-sided canon crush on him.
It's just hard for me to see the Warden in a serious relationship with ANYONE. XD

The fandom sucks ass.

How is the game awesome, exactly? No, seriously, beyond gameplay, how?

Re: 148

[identity profile] torayakari.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Beyond revolutionary and totally addicting gameplay?
Disney nostalgia factor, gorgeous graphics, a story so complicated the Matrix is jealous, kickass enemy and character designs.
Just to name a few.

Re: 148

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"Revolutionary," ahahahaha...

The gameplay in 1 was better, both are take offs of Zelda.

Disney/FF nostalgia is nice, but KH1 also fared better than KH2 because KH1 didn't try to translate scenes from the movies into the games, which worked only to it's detriment.

A story so complicated the Matrix is jealous? Holy shit, are you serious? The story was absolute shit. It was nonsensical, boring, contrived, stupid and drawn out.

None of the character designs were even the least bit memorable and all fall along the same vein. The heartless are cute, but again, that's not enough.

The graphics, I will grant you. The expressiveness of the characters really adds a lot of charm.

Re: 148

They're nothing like Zelda. Zelda is an aventure game with puzzle elements. Combat is based mostly over strategy and timing.

Kingdom Hearts is an all-out fast-paced action about skill game with stats. If anything, Kingdom Hearts is a take-off of Zone of the Enders without the mecha.

But I do agree that the first game was much better than the second.

While I agree KH2 was a major let down in comparison to KH1, it was more of a story integration problem. In KH1 the exploration of worlds and completion of each was directly linked to progression of the story and discovery of what the hell was going on. In KH2 it was more 'we know what's going on, we're gonna show you bits of it for 2 hours in a mindnumbing tutorial, and then you'll get several hours of Disney based gameplay that ends up having little to nothing to do with the overall story before finally reaching the conclusion where we'll explain everything all at once.' Also, KH1 did translate scenes from the movies on some of the worlds - The Little Mermaid and Aladdin as example, I can't remember any others.

Re: 148

(Anonymous) 2008-12-10 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
A game is all about the gameplay. If a game has good gameplay, everything else is irrelevant. I hate this fucking "I PLAY FOR THE STORY" fandom crap.

Kingdom Hearts was extremely fun to play even if the sequel was kinda ruined by the crappy "win button" action commands.

Re: 148

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
That's pretty stupid and ignorant of you.

Re: 148

(Anonymous) 2008-12-10 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
How is it stupid? The best videogames are the best games due to their gameplay. That's why they're videogames. Tetris? Portal? Little Big Planet? StarCraft? Mario Bros? Do you think people play them because they want to "learn more about the story" or because they "want to have fun"?

Final Fantasy is a game. The story is just part of the world for the player to interact with, it's not a sacred canon of masterful storytelling.

Re: 148

(Anonymous) 2008-12-10 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, it was the graphics and the fact that they actually did managed to mesh Disney and FF characters together and have it working most of the time. I do like the story because it managed to make light and darkness as concepts easier to understand (I was probably the target age when I first played it), as well as having the 'THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP' stuff not be...too annoying.

Have to admit though, I was totally siding with the villains, mostly because I was frustrated that "darkness doesn't equal evil" didn't come up in the first game.

Despite that, I'm way disappointed with KHII for muddling with the plot and I hope Birth by Sleep is more like KH1.

Yeah, ttly srs bsns, sorry.

Re: 148

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, KH was a rather shallow game. Darkness had to equal evil or else what were you going to fight, exactly?
Again, I liked the first KH. I thought it was cutesy, I agree with most of your praise.

Same anon

(Anonymous) 2008-12-11 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
That's true. I probably could've worded that better (as in, I didn't like that the game had no shades of gray until the later games, both of which were disappointing in one way or another).

It was! And as someone said before in an attempt to be insulting, yeah, I played it when I was about 13/14. *shrug* Everyone's gotta be young sometime.

No, seriously, beyond gameplay, how?

Ugh, I agree with you that the KH series was subpar, but this sentence is full of so much fail.

I realize that there are people out there who play video games more for stories than gameplay - hell, people like that created the success of the FF series - but to assert that the story of a game is even close to as important as the gameplay is so much bullshit and chips.

EDIT: It occurs to me that before I make such a vehement statement I should qualify it - how about the fact that no Game of the Year (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_of_the_year) has ever been a single-player RPG? And those very RPGs that do manage to break the top ten (KotoR, Bioshock, Deus Ex, etc.) do so because of the top-tier, exciting gameplay they add to their stories? And that many of the best-selling, highest-rated games of all time (RE4, Halo, Zelda) have terrible stories or no story at all?

I like good storytelling too, and it can certainly enhance the experience of a game. But if you want an excellent story, read a book. Games are games.

Re: 148

I swear I saw Bioshock picked as Game of the Year by some magazine or other. There was totally a sticker on it when I bought it. Every magazine picks its own Game of the Year, anyway, and there ends up being more than one really, every magazine that didn't pick Portal last year should be burned in a heap - a number of which just like to curry to popular opinion to keep readers happy. Unless you're talking specifically about A|AS or GameSpot, in which case I will shut my trap.

Am I seriously the only person who thought the storyline was awesome and compelling? Seriously? Anyone?

Some parts of the gameplay in the first game pissed me off SO BAD (ajskhfkaj ALICE IN WONDERLAND WORLD WHY DID I GET STUCK IN YOU?! and having to race Riku pissed me off so bad because I failed so hardcore at it), but I was thrilled when the plot started evolving after the first game. The first game was adorable and fluff and sweet and fun with mixes (even strong mixes!) of dark. Chain of Memories was... pretty half-and-half (most of the sweetness was bittersweet, what with Namine, etcetera). And KHII just took everything and expanded it. The Roxas storyline broke my heart, seriously. And yeah, I'll get called lame for it I'm sure, but Axel's death broke my heart. In fact, in a lot of ways, I found the Nobodies (including Roxas and Namine) maybe not more compelling, but a lot more interesting and heartbreaking than the three mains. I love Sora, Kairi, and Riku, but the Nobodies are pretty tragic for (for the most part) fucked-up villains.

AND THAT'S MY TWO CENTS NOBODY CARES ABOUT. Feel free to commense pointing and laughing. :|b

Re: 148

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-12-11 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
I agree! Well, I haven't played CoM, and I thought racing Riku was just challenging enough to be fun, but I agree with the rest. I even shed a tear or two for Axel (and spent hours to come up with a plausible way to resurrect him in fanfic...).

Yay, someone else who doesn't hate KH II!! :D

If a game manages to make me cry at the end, then, in my opinion, the game has succeeded with what it was supposed to: Making an engaging and fun story, with memorable characters. And(This will probably make me the lamest person of the year, BUT WHO CARES)the ending of KH II made me cry, because it was such a sweet and happy ending :) I didn't cry when any of the Org 13 member(Not even Axel, lol)"died", but I felt sad for Roxas - because of the life he could never have :,(

Re: 148

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-12-11 09:18 am (UTC)(link)
If you disregard the gameplay (which I really enjoyed btw), I think it basically depends on taste. I loved the characters and story (and I especially enjoyed the way clues about what the Organisation was doing and why were gradually revealed), but if you don't connect with either you'll obviously not feel much for the game itself.

There is also the tendency to "read against canon", so to speak; you might have decided to dislike the story before you've even read/played it (I've done this myself occasionally, though I try not to). It can really destroy any potential enjoyment you could get out of the canon; you only see the bad points and miss the good points, and sometimes even turn good points into bad points by misinterpreting them. I'm not going to accuse you of this, since I don't know the way you think, but it may be something to consider?

(Anonymous) 2008-12-12 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Damn you. I lost the game.
