I didn't really like the mortal episodes, tbh. I really liked the dynamic between Jin Mi and Phoenix (gah, I forgot his name. ZuFeng?), and it the mortal world their dynamic was so different. I stopped watching after they got back to the Heavenly realm, and sort of forgot about it.
Maybe I should finish it...

The wolf and the tanuki have no romantic chemistry. I'm sure a ton of people will disagree but it super reads like a brother/sister relationship to me. And I don't think there was any ship tease.

You are totally right about tanuki and kitsune. Though I think the wolf's only true love is Animacity. Wolf x Animacity is my OTP.

I'd be all over this fandom if the slash wasn't canon. I shiped the hell out of a crusader knight and his frenemy in a fantasy book when I didn't even know about slash.
However I don't ship canon relationship. Way less space for speculation.
