It’s nice seeing so many comments too; I’ve learned some new things from recent discussions.

Mmm, guess I have mixed feelings on work life at the moment. On one hand, being around so many people each and every day freighters me sometimes but it’s been good for me, forcing me to address my anxieties and phobias. Making money is always good too; thankful to enough for rent and bills as well as DVDs and books. Though I can’t afford to return to college, I am continuing my education through other means. :)

Fandom spaces being used as a substitute for activism.

There's a big difference between spreading awareness or doing things like commissions going towards a charity/organization, and doing weird shit like making it about fandom in light of serious issues.

Like people drawing white characters into black characters and just tagging it with BLM when it had nothing to do with the protest or supporting organization. Or one that sticks out in my mind was back before gay marriage got legalized someone was carrying a sign that said something along the lines of 'Make gay marriage legal so Blaine and Kurt (from Glee) can get married!' - there's a time and a goddamn place. I know that more often than not it usually stems from the very young side of fandom with good intentions, but on the other hand I just wish people would have some form of common sense.

My niece has started prefering pink over blue. I think she's picked it up at school. The whole family are a bit confused, because we're all careful to stay away from that kind of crap.

Now we have a dilemma. We can't discourage her or say anything negative about it, because we don't want to give her the impression that being female and liking girly things is inherently wrong. On the other hand, the pink/blue color coding of toys as they get older is prolific and detrimental to their development. Studies have shown that it discourages girls from pursuing interests in STEM.

So. many. mixed. feelings.

Anyone here drink coconut milk? I drink plant based milks. I don't like soy because you can't heat it in the microwave easily. I mostly drink almond because it lasts a long while and tastes fairly neutral. It can also be microwaved. But it isn't super environmentally friendly. So, thought of switching to coconut milk. But does it taste super coconut-y?

This is just gonna be mixed feelings but I'm afraid what they're mixed with is whining.

I'm glad I still have a job when so many people have lost theirs, and I would want to keep mine anyway. But I'm jealous of all the people who get to permanently work from home since COVID kicked in, even though that caused issues for a lot of people too.

My roommate/only real friend has a new boyfriend, and I'm happy for her that unlike her first real boyfriend, this one seems nice (and hates Trump and takes COVID seriously, phew!) but I'm still jealous even though I'm asexual.

I'm bad at being around people generally, so I'd be terrible at romantic relationships even if being touched, even platonically, didn't make me both cringe away and have to stop myself hitting whoever's doing the touching.

At least one of us came out of our abusive fucked up childhoods a functional human being. I'm happy for her, but I'm also jealous that I didn't.

Spelling/grammar errors that bug you?

The past tense of lead is led, not lead. It's not like read/read where it's spelled the same but pronounced differently, it's a different frigging word.

I see this mistake all the time and just came across it again and it drives me crazy.

Also should/could/would "of" instead of "have" (or the contraction form). This one really annoys me, although at least I frequently see people calling it out when someone does it, while I NEVER see anyone correcting anyone who says lead when it should be led.

What about you guys?

Can we talk about straight, white Christian men for a minute?

Okay, so I realize that's probably not a great title but I'm not sure what else to call this.

So I have this friend who's a straight white Christian man. He's generally a good guy, but man, he's so fucking clueless sometimes. He's fairly liberal as far as his own personal politics (or at least what he claims they are), but he's like...almost aggressive about being "civil" and constantly lamenting how the two sides can't work together anymore. He'll talk about how "nice" some people who believe in some truly heinous things are and how you should be able to have civil relationships with them, and it's like, yeah, they're nice to YOU because you're a straight white Christian man. You're "one of them". Those of us who are not straight or white or Christian are seen as not even human to them some of the time, and we shouldn't have to be nice to them when they wouldn't even hesitate to take our rights away if they had the chance.

He just clearly doesn't get it, and when those of us in our group who aren't straight white Christian men try to explain things to him, he seems to understand for a bit, but then it always happens again. I don't believe that he's a bad person deep down (or maybe he is and I'm just in denial, I don't know) but he just doesn't understand what it's like for those of us who aren't in his position and I'm not sure he's even capable of it since he'll never live it.

I don't whether to just give up and stop being around him or continue trying to educate him or what. I feel like straight white Christian men are an extreme minority here (meaning on this site...I think there are a couple, or at least were at one point, I don't know if they're still around) so I'm sure some of you have been in this kind of situation. How did you deal with it?

I personally adore Videodrome (1983) but suspect it would not be approved for production these days on account of multiple, ah, 'plot details'. It was pretty controversial back in the 80's too.

Fandom thoughts/complaints/questions

So I keep checking one of my small fandoms on AO3 hoping eventually there will be something for my ship, and I keep coming across this fic that has a summary like "Character A who left Show X years ago suddenly joins Show Y [even though the two shows have no connection whatsoever] for no discernible reason, and falls in love with a slightly AU version of Character B from Show Z [which also has no connection to either of the previous two shows], and Celebrity C [not a character played by them, but them as themselves] is their kid" and I'm just like...WTF. I mean, sure, write your crazy crack fic if you want, but don't tag it as Show Y. It has no characters from Show Y, and it's not like it's set in some unique universe or something (all three shows take place in the "real world"). I just really don't understand why it's tagged as Show Y when it has literally nothing to do with it.

Also, if there's a tag for A/B which has a handful of fics, and also a tag for B/A, which only has one, is there a way to notify AO3 to combine them since there doesn't seem to be a point in having two?

05. Wait people sort only by kudos? I only ever sorted by recently updated/posted to see what was new, didn't know it wasn't a common thing either.

When I first get into a fandom, the first thing I do is sort by pairing and kudos. It's always worked really well for me. Sorting by kudos doesn't help you find the best fics, but it definitely helps you filter out the worst ones. And since I tend to stay in my fandoms for several years and read voraciously the whole time, I have no need to find all the best fics immediately. I'll find them soon enough; in the mean time I'd like to waste as little time as possible reading badfic.
