My old school understanding of AU was that you changed one event or several events in a character's past and wrote an AU based around what would have happened then. That was how most fic seemed to roll with it anyway.

NOW it's all high school AUs and coffee shop AUs and shit where, exactly as you describe, they erase all history. They are not my cup of tea.

I very much miss the old school type of AU fic.

My reasons for enjoying high school AUs are pretty similar. My school life wasn't really trash, but it was pretty boring because I had the strictest curfew out of all my friends and didn't get to do as much fun stuff as they did. High school AUs are kind of my way to live out an idealized version of high school.

I was so disappointed in how Irene was characterized and handled in general! You're right that her being fridged was pointless and that she could have had a cameo that made way more sense for the character. I thought these were really fun films overall but Irene's treatment was one of the things that bothered me a lot about them.
