It's not canon. I have read the book and I'm a huge Gelphie shipper, but it's open to interpretation. There is a lot of subtext for the pairing, but it's just subtext.

However, when I first browsed through the fanfics I remember I had trouble with who the hell "Nia" and "Mero" were - I actually went back to the manga to check it :P . At least they are known now by their proper names...
