146. I understand how you feel. I'm actually going through something similar right now. I broke up not too long ago and I sorta dove head first back into fandom to ease the pain a little. It feels safe to fangirl over a fictional character especially when you're still hurting from a RL relationship. We'll both hang in there and hopefully as time passes we'll be able to move on. Yes, simplistic tokenism has saved the day so far. And using a person of color or from a different culture as your Internet Face is totally unproblematic and never smells of cultural appropriation!

I'm not disagreeing with you here at all. But what if you use a person of a different gender as your Internet Face? I'm not a male yet I use a male icon almost exclusively. Is that problematic?

Is there a study on this anywhere? I'd love to see the results of an actual study of internet behavior based on avatars/icons. Are assumptions made based on your avatar/icon vis a vis RL gender, race, and so forth and do those assumptions color others' behavior towards you? Huh. Now I'm massively intrigued. Thank you, anonymouse. I'll be puzzling this out all night.

You know, I don't think it's racist if you're a fan of certain characters, but don't own icons of them. I normally only use icons to represent me, icons of my favorite characters I roleplay or whatnot.

I think it's wrong to automatically assume someone's racist because they don't have PoC icons. I don't feel the need to satisfy someone else by putting Martha Jones or Tosh or anyone else I love to death that are PoC, in my icon slots, because they think I'm racist if I don't.

You know, it's also sad. When I watch a show, I don't see color or race, I see a good actor or a shitty actor. Maybe even a character I really like or a character I can't stand. Like, take for instance, Lost, I love Sun I think she's brilliant, but at the same time I'm not a fan of Walter's father who's name escapes me. I just started watching it, and I already HATE Sawyer, no real reason just do, and I'm not a fan of Saied Not sure if I spelled his name right.

My favorite characters are Jack, Sun, Charlie, and Locke. Does it make me racist because I see the character, not the race they are? Seriously, I don't understand why people have to so easily play the race card. I like people based on who they are, not what they are.

107 – ME TOO! All the time...it’s so much fun. But I always imagined the actors and not like...real people.
110 – I do this too! Anything with Canada, and then a place I know, and then Toronto (cause it’s close enough to my hometown) and for my university, too! I love House a lot for this reason, because there’s always random Canadian references thrown in (like not flying to London, Ontario and Wilson’s McGill sweater). I squeeeee everytime I catch one.
