I want to hug this person so hard, because I just got into that fandom/related fandoms, and I'm all in my honeymoon stage, but at the same time I know what it's like to fall out of love with a fandom and it sucks. So, BIG HUGS, OP, and I think if you wrote your heart out for the fandom, and made friends, they won't forget you.

Maybe someday you'll want to come back, but even if you don't, love anyway. :)

Because in my experience having POC in your LJ icons doesn't necessarily exonerate from racist behavior, but then if I knew that all I needed to not be racist was to have and use certain types of icons then I guess we just found that solution to racism. < / sarcasm >

Yeah that makes no sense. I get how subconsciously people may not have those icons because they may not be as attracted to or drawn to POC but you can't really tell that for sure from a person's collection of icons.

And that's assuming the fandoms they're into even have POC characters. I only have 15 icon slots. Of those I've only chosen to have 4 fandom icons from 3 fandoms. 2/3 of those fandoms have a very small set of main characters and none of them are POC. The other fandom I have *one* icon of and while I agree both Martha and Mickey rock, I'd rather have an icon of the Doctor. Apparently choosing the main character over one of the secondary characters makes me racist now. *rolls eyes*

None of the characters are female and all but icon feature Brits or characters played by British actors. So no doubt I have gender and xenophobia issues too lol.

I haven't really read any of this series, maybe seen one comic strip and to be honest I tend to pass through most of the trouble that it's bringing up. So I don't know if you're a troll trying to get a rise, but what a load of crap! You like the series, but you can't stand it if it's taking fun and making light of your own countries troubles? Like I said, not a fan but I know what the series is about and I just can't believe that you're willing to laugh at other countries difficult pasts, but feel the need to tell people to stop it with your own.

112. I love the incredibly naive assumption that liking said characters or being attracted to characters (many people's motivations for having icons) stops you being racist. Because liking =/= considering equal. Someone could have only icons of black people and be incredibly racist by objectiying them horribly.

Or, they could have none and not be racist at all, preferring characters that were white either through coincidence or by liking genres where there is a poor level of equality in casting, for example. Or it could be fandom screwing up by not making a good ratio of white to nonwhite icons.

What you think is haha cute may not be for some other person. And I think that's okay. It's okay to make light of disgusting history, and it's okay to be offended at that. You just have to keep in mind that you are not a special snowflake. Why should others stop abusing your country when you may have made light of their countries' bad times? (Or if not you personally, then the fandom, in general.) tl;dr: I think that in order to enjoy Hetalia (or at least its fandom), you have to have a bit of a thick skin and lots of irreverence. What you're doing is probably going to offend someone. What someone else does is probably going to offend you. Be prepared for it and accept it.

I mean, witness all the people in F!S freaking out because they think they're weird for liking someone older, less thin, etc. I like pretty people as much as the next person, but if the only thing I got to look at was the most popular shows...I don't know that I'd think I had much of a sex drive either.
