I'm kinda heavy, too (And not like, "Ohhh, my gawwwwd, Tina I'm like, soooo fat, I'm like, a size 10 now, gawd."), and I cosplay.
As long as you put some honest effort into your costume and make sure that you tailor it in a way that it fits you well, you probably won't get made fun of.

Usually the "Fat cosplayers" that get made fun of are the ones that try to wear poorly made/too small costumes in a bad attempt to look "hot/sexy."

For me, I'm not like 300 pounds or something. But my family has wide hips so cosplaying wise, I have to find something or have it tailored to curve my wide hips just right so it looks good.
