117. So true! So true! It's Miyazaki! How can anyone hold liking Miyazaki against someone else? Yeesh.

THIS XD I adore Paul Magrs. He gets to write crackfic for a living! (Poodle revolutions, a space station the exact size and shape of St Pancras station, the entirety of Blue Angel...) Have you ever read It's Raining Again (http://www.iriswildthyme.thiswaydown.org/raining.html)? It's... special XD (Also, I'm half-considering writing fic for it >.> )

[identity profile] theorygirl.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of the hate for the movie version comes from that fact that people feel Miyazaki dropped the ball. I mean, while I enjoy the movie, every time I watch it, I can't help but think about all the scenes in the book that could have been awesome in the movie. Plus the fact that he stuck an anti-war message in there when there wasn't really one in the book, and glossed over the reason why only Sophie could safely separate Calcifer from Howl.
But if you like the movie version better, then that's your thing. And honestly, I wouldn't have read the book if I hadn't heard Miyazaki was making the movie, so there you go.

117. I feel this way about 80% of the book-to-movie attaptions that have come along, but especially Howl's. They're different mediums that require different handling, and they aught to be judged independantly.

123. Yea, John Green! And, OP, you are right on so many levels. ^_^

154. I think she had a very inspiring moral - that daughters are always princesses in their father's eyes, and that having a happy family is more valuble than living your life in endless fantasies.

154 OP

(Anonymous) 2009-01-31 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
Which would have been fine if it didn't run counter to the moral given to the main character, which was "always go for your dreams, rescue the princess, endless fantasies can be fulfilled if you're brave enough".

[identity profile] silvermedley.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
117. YES. VERY YES.

The movie is wonderful, and it also re-introduced me to Diana Wynne Jones and her fantastic work. (As it turned out I had already read some of her books when I was a child, haha.)

Movie and book, they're both great♥ It just happens to be that they're telling different tales with most of the same characters.

110: Good cosplayers =/= good actors EVER. All the cosplayers I've met don't understand shit about the character and/or characterization. They usually do it for the gay or that they just like cosplaying the character. Some cosplay groups I've been in don't know anything about being on time or doing shit for the fans. It's much harder than everyone thinks. Then you have to do about one hundred takes of every scene. Even physically fit cosplayers would get exhausted and probably give up. I've never really gave a damn about this show or this massive (and useless) wank over the casting, but there is a reason it's hard to become an actor.

138. Heh. I would not suggest using traits of Hetalia countries or similar characters to teach. But if you mean referring to countries using 'human' terms to help students understand or remember simple facts... you're far from alone. Many history teachers do that from time to time. I'm not sure if that's what you're talking about, but the idea of what I personally mentioned is about as old as dirt.

Of course, I was pretty much shocked several months ago when I looked over my Wes Civ II lecture notes online and found that one of my professors referred to Italy and Germany as 'dating' during WWII. Which was more than a little weird, but there you go.

101. Well to each their own, but I wouldn't do him unless someone paid me and made Keith wear a ball-gag.

118. That's how I feel about it too. My best friend from high school and I were very much like Enid and Rebecca. Depressed, spoiled goofballs.

135. I dunno. I see them having father-son, mentor-student dynamic. And I like it that way.

162. I love this secret and want to hump it.

104. ......that sounds like a character from a bad Mary Sue fanfic. No wonder I've never felt any desire to read those books.
However: YAY DUO!!

107. DENNOU COOOOIIIIL

110. ...I know that Katara hahahaha

117. YES. SO MUCH YES. They are both good. They are different and they are both good.

159. Oh god I died of lol

164. I know in my case, I just never got past the first five episodes - it seemed to me that he spent all five of them doing nothing but whining and being scared of things. I couldn't relate to him at all. I'm assuming, from your secret, that he improves, but I couldn't get far enough in the series to actually get to it.

NS!2: awww, the Lost Boys vampires aren't boring! Just look at their hair! And they bleed glitter! It is endless lol.

NS!4: OH MY GOD TALESPIN.

well hey there page eleven

104 OP here. Those books ARE a bad mary sue fan fic. I'd never recommend them to anyone, at least not after the first 5 or so, but god help me I can't stop reading them.

124: Are you me?

I agree with you to no end ;-; Mariya makes me smile every episode thus far. Honestly, if it weren't for him, I'd drop the series right now >.>; It's a great plot, but he MAKES it the great plot.

I like it how the people who vehemently oppose to this secret are usually the people who hate the series and didn't read the secret completely.

Personally, I wouldn't use Hetalia characters due to copyright and that sort of thing, but humanizing countries is a creative way to do it. It makes it into a memory aid (/psychology major) for them and make the subject fun. Let's face it, except for a few, history can be extremely dry and boring. There is nothing wrong for people to spice it up a little.

Hell, if I didn't have Carmen Sandiego game shows when I was a kid, I would never got interested in history.

Hell, I wish my teachers would've done something like that, maybe I wouldn't have to sleep through high school history. Hell, I wish my Existential Philosophy class had shown Boogiepop Phantom, which explores the basics of the subject.

Re: 138

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
But if it takes anything other than PURE HISTORY to make history interesting to you, you're a horrible person. Didn't you know that?

Less sarcastic, I AGREE. Not about using the Hetalia characters, because yeah, bad idea due to copyright AND because -- well, creating your own anthropomorphized way to get things to click in kids' heads would be so much more interesting, and you could be far more in-depth with it than Hetalia ever gets.

Sorry, but I'm a music and English/languages/writing geek first and foremost. Can barely handle math or science, and the only things that have managed to get me interested in history as a whole have been Historyonics and Hetalia. Which is a shame, because history is about people and stories and I'd love to love it more often, but it's often presented so dryly and badly that I can't bring myself to care beyond major tragedies, or memorize any of it. Most of my multiplication tables I memorized through song for pete's sake, Schoolhouse Rock was amazing to me ("WE THE PEOPLE, IN ORDER TO FORM A MORE PERFECT UNION..." FUCK YEAH) and almost all other facts and figures I know, I know because of stories. Apparently that's a bad thing, but *shrugs*

... Hell, I wish I had Minamimoto back during my math classes. ):
