worldbuilding

What are some pieces of media that you think have great worldbuilding, and what do you love about it? Can be tv show, movie, book, video game, comic, whatever.

And what sorts of things do you look for in worldbuilding in general, or what sorts of worlds are an automatic draw for you?

Bioshock (the games and book) is the best. Not only do you have people you meet and the general atmosphere/environment, there are audio journals through out the whole game that you can find to learn more about the fall of Rapture. The book is a prequel and it is awesome to see how connected the two are (people in the book have audio journals in the game).

Dishonored has fantastic worldbuilding. So much detail went into the setting, the culture, the clothing, the social mores, even the calendar. I especially love the religion, or lack thereof - there's an order dedicated to discouraging the devil/trickster analogue, but there's no god-figure on the other end of the spectrum.

Garth Nix's Abhorsen books have great worldbuilding, IMO. As a reader, the worldbuilding details I enjoy are details about food, culture, landscape and a rough sketch of the political landscape as well. But most of all, I look for an internal logic to the worldbuilding. It doesn't have to be realistic in the sense that it's like IRL, but it has to make sense _for that world_, you know?

For example, if there's a culture that has sci-fi-like technology like lasers and spaceships, I'm going to need a solid reason for why they might opt to use swords and armor in battle instead of the far deadlier and efficient weapons they clearly have. If there isn't a logical reason provided, then I'm going to assume this is sloppy writing and worldbuilding and I'm not going to be keen on reading more of the author's work because it seems like an indication that they're going to be careless about more than just this.

I really enjoy CJ Cherryh's worldbuilding, especially when she's introducing aliens. The Mri series, the Gehenna book, the Chanur books, Foreigner series.... I just really like how she makes whole civilizations without bonking you over the head with a million pages of exposition.

The Edge Chronicles. The bulk of them take place within a century, and it's a very vibrant, changing century. Power blocks come and go, technology changes, the ECONOMY has massive upheavals due to world events. New markets appear due to world events. Markets DISappear due to world events. Different careers have different values depending on the needs of that era. It's FANTSTIC.

Twelve Kingdoms (both anime and novels) has such an amazing world building.

Haven't read them but I've heard The Dresden Files also has amazing world building. I'm trying to remember the name of this other book but all I remember it was that the world was mostly water and the character was a dude who got mauled by his doppleganger. But it also has amazing world building as well.

Pokemon

No I'm not kidding. The world is unique and it has a lot of space for adventures and fun. There's a lot you can do with a story of a trainer on the road, or if you wanna go unconventional a coordinator going between competitions. The world is wide and big and still has so much possibility for invention. (fan regions, anyone?)

Like...the canon honestly as an adult isn't as engaging with the characters. Ideally if it had the character depth of Digimon Adventure but with the world of Pokemon that would be ideal

of course for fanworks its a perfect world for people like me who are generally more into the world than the canon characters. As unpopular an approach that is in fandom.

Also lately I've been all about the world of Percy Jackson. Making demigod campers is so much fun and the setting of Camp Halfblood just makes me wanna write shameless self indulgent slice of life. Only problem is I'm hella nervous when it comes to coming up with good quests and adventures.

Honestly anything with a fun setting and aspects that appeal to me with lots of space for original character making are always a plus.

I almost choked eating a hot dog today. It was scary as hell. Also would have been an embarrassing way to die.

the other day on the way home from work, some idiot in the turning lane of the other street suddenly went through what was for him a red light (not even flashing yellow) and I had to slam my brakes in the intersection not to hit him. Freaked me out. He was going so fast too.

I'm glad you're okay, nonny! I choked on a Lifesaver once and, after I managed to cough it up, my first thought was how embarrassing it would have been to have died choking on a candy called Lifesaver.

I think I had Covid two weeks ago. I'm fully vaccinated, but I got a sore throat, and then a stuffed head, and then it was awkward to BREATHE and I had heart palpitations and dizziness. I took tylenol and rested and I'm fine now, but though I probably should have gone to the hospital for oxygen, local ICUs are full anyway.

Anyway, get vaccinated if you can, kids. I'm 45 so I usually don't take too many chances.

My food processor started smoking and died last night and I had a bad few seconds where I thought it might catch fire. Also my fire extinguisher needs replacing.

And my cat has been breathing open-mouthed since I brought her home from the vet (she got a cortisone shot for allergies) yesterday; I hope she's doing better when I get home from work.

I dunno how much more crap I can deal with tbh, the last month or so has been a lot.

Pretty sure nothing tops the sight of my bun suddenly freaking out and being unable to get to his feet a couple weeks ago.

The next morning I had a driver throw something at my car and hit it (I think it was a water bottle or something) while screaming unintelligibly out the window at me while passing, presumably because I had not been doing 50mph in a single-lane-each-way construction zone with no median while it was dawn and not yet light out. And after the previous night I'd had, I was just like "*glance over shoulder to see that windows are intact* Whatever, idiot."

I really enjoy the worldbuilding in Becky Chambers' Wayfarers series. A lot of sci fi lit seems to be stuck in dystopias lately, and her books have a great balance of optimism and realism. Lots of different cultures and species, and they all have their flaws while not being evil or a monolith.

Alternative Fanfic sites from AO3 that you use

Nothing against AO3, I do still use it - but I was curious if anybody goes to other sites instead and/or in addition to AO3?

I still look in on ff.net because I like reading old CLAMP and Naruto fics on there. I keep meaning to see what Watpad is like properly since that last time I visited I felt a bit overwhelmed.
