127 - ...There's a lot I could say about this, some of it argumentative, and some of it agreeing. What I will say is that the top/bottom roles? That's not how het works in real life either.

129 - I know the feeling. But then, I tend to include pubic hair in my fic or if I find myself doodling nudes for a reason.

155 - I'm a little perplexed what being male has to do with it. I'm also a little confused by the idea that the two are comparable. They're different people, and they matured differently. What would be mature for Zuko wouldn't be mature for Aang, and vice versa. They took very different paths to be who they are at the end of the series.

But I suppose that if you mean that Zuko being more cynical makes him more mature, I agree that it doesn't.

And I still don't know what it has to do with maleness.

118: That manip is hilariously awful. Why is Ianto's head growing out of his collarbone?
119: I like his character, but he has very little charisma compared to say, Cook. His looks have never done anything for me either.
129: I personally think shaving/waxing pubic hair is absurd, but people should be able to go with what is comfortable for them and not feel bad about it. You're most definitely not a freak.

121. I loved Chance and Sassy's relationship in the movies. Watching them bounce off each other was always entertaining. (But I have a feeling that if our younger selves met, we would get into a horrible fight. I was a big Chance/Delilah shipper.)

121. AHHH! HOMEWARD BOUND! To be honest, I had a crush on Chance. But only because Michael J. Fox voiced him.

124. Jorma, Akiva and Andy are my OT3. ;D

134. I love you and I would love to read that essay.

144. I have that poem that she writes for him written on my wall. That movie is so beautiful. The opening sequence almost had me in tears alone.

168. Rather than judging them based on their journalist integrity, shouldn't you judge them on how they present their views concerning the way people should be treated? I'm not a follower of either, but I'd still choose Keith. At least Keith cares about the rights and well beings of others.(Or at least from what I've seen)

171. Wait... They broke up?

How is no one pointing out that these two are obviously the same poster, because they mix up slash and yaoi? Slash is not yaoi. Slash does not have a seme or uke. Slash is for western fandoms, yaoi is from Japan (or Asian, if you prefer). Slash might have top/bottom, but that is not nearly the same concept as seme/uke.

And for another thing: plz don't tell anyone about the sexuality of any group, even if you are in it. Do I think seme/uke is realistic? No. Do I care? No. Do I think tops/bottoms are more realistic, and there are people out there like that? Yes.

Your rant shouldn't be about yaoi/seme/ukes. It should be about people pretending that attitude automatically = what you are in the bedroom. Of course, if the fic!attitude of a character doesn't match what it is in canon "just because they're in the bedroom" you can suck on it, because that's just being OOC.

109. People are really saying that? Weird. Faith and science has been a theme since the beginning and Jack, who was always on the side of science, now must believe in something impossible when met with proof. Hence the Biblical story. Why are people so dumb?
135. I feel the same way about my cat. It probably has to do with the fact I got him a few weeks after my dad died, so he helped me out a lot with stress. I lost my mind when he got out one night.

166: Not like you would have to learn Highschool Japanese (light novels don't contain much furigana). I also wouldn't trust fantrans which,as of right now, that's all that exists. Wait till April they're like half a Harry Potter book!

Though I wonder why so many people glorify sexual assault... she's an absolute horrendous character in the first novel and anime. I mean become a better person off someone who sexually assaults people? is that even possible? She does become a much better character though.

127

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2009-02-23 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, you really need to watch just what you say. First of all, 'slash' isn't the term you want to use, since its domain broadly covers all fan fiction depicting romantic relationships between same-sex characters. I believe yaoi and shounen ai are what you probably want to be gunning for, as subsets of slash that more neatly encompass the particular romantic tropes you seem to hate. Not to say that you won't encounter said tropes in other varieties of slash, but functionally speaking, slash is usually the term fanfic writers use to set themselves apart from the obnoxious seme/uke tradition. So there's that.

But now let's examine that tradition. You were right about one thing, which is that yaoi and shounen ai are, for better or worse, essentially porn designed for women. I don't believe this was ever even in contention. That's why yaoi relationships have so much in common with depictions of romantic relationships in, say, shoujo - because they are intended for the same group of consumers. And you can say that just because a media product isn't catered specifically to you doesn't mean you have to ignore its flaws, but if so, I'll have to ask if you're willing to criticize all pornography, the main attraction of which lies precisely in veering away from reality. Or indeed, if realism is even your concern at all, in which case you would find that those unrealistic romantic tropes are just as annoying in het fiction. Switching the gender of a character should not be carte blanche for them to be portrayed as the weak and helpless party in a relationship.

So, it seems to me that the only problem you have is that yaoi and shounen ai make homosexual relationships seem too much like the heterosexual variety: in other words, making "men" seem too much like "women". And we just can't have that, can we?

Re: 127

[identity profile] tod-hollykim.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Another thing to look at is the society that yaoi and shounen ai come from. Japanese/Asian Women for the longest time were even more subservient then women in western society, specially American society. That has been changing but the stereotypes are still there. All the writers are doing are changing out a female character for a male character.

[identity profile] morgana006.livejournal.com 2009-02-23 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)

(Anonymous) 2009-02-24 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
James gets a pass on the spandex because darn it, he's circus-folk. His first little onesie-romper was probably stretchy and stripey (no wonder the man never learned to properly dress himself).

But multi-patterned fabrics that don't hug the body are just more visually entertaining (also, less daunting to wear/make than spandex).

[identity profile] duae.livejournal.com 2009-02-23 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
At the surface, it sounds like you have a legit complaint.

Except people have been getting off on HET and LESBIAN sex forever, as well as gay sex.

If you really think yuri and het are treated oh-so-real to life respectfully and it's only yaoi that is unrealistic... you need to get off your high horse and look around. All fantasy sex and fantasy relationships are FANTASY. Get over it.

[identity profile] makishef.livejournal.com 2009-02-23 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
101. Bill and Ted are my friendship OTP. ♥

127. I sort of agree that the "omg, he's a bottom/uke, so he must be skinny and ultra-pretty and REALLY FLAMING and adorable and shy," etc., sort of fiction is based on really ridiculous stereotypes that are offensive fetishistic. But this really has nothing to do with the fact that they're gay men; it happens in het porn and lesbian porn, too. So bitch all you want about unrealistic stereotypical roles in pornography, but please to not be acting like you are the only person ever to be dehumanized by porn.

Also, thanks for assuming all women are uke-types.

129. Afaik, most women actually sort of... maintain, but waxing or going bare at all is not nearly as predominant as the porn world wants us to believe, and it's not as predominantly preferred, either. :) Go with what makes you comfortable!
