109. You mean those fans allegedly doing that managed to miss the whole arcs about Charlie and his Catholic guilt, or Eko and his dead priest brother and his church, and focus on THIS? Not buyin' it. Also, you forgot Islamic themes - I know we've seen Sayid praying at least once.

116. See icon.

118 & 127: if you don't even know enough about yaoi and slash to realize they're not the same genre, then why should I care what your opinion of them is?

129. Be as natural as you like, sister. Personally, I think pubic hair is hella sexy - I love its texture, scent, etcetera (so yes, I am going to mention it in my smut - I write for myself most of all), and I think bald crotches on either gender are FUG. But it is just an aesthetic preference, not a moral issue, and that happens to be mine.

159. I would LOVE to get my pubes stuck in Joey's teeth. (I would reciprocate of course - mmm, silver!)

168. Of course I like Keith better because I agree with him. Duh. Is this supposed to be some kind of dark dirty secret?

You may not be buying it. However it's true. (Read the review as well as the comments. Especially dead_red_eyes.)

Speaking of which, every time the show veers into Christian parable, it makes me want to gag (my reaction to organized religion in general). I understand wanting to reach into Biblical imagery and allegory for literary purposes, but if "the meaning" of Lost really turns out to be a death/rebirth story along the lines of the new testament, I WANT MY MONEY BACK. (http://io9.com/5156786/on-lost-theyre-leaving-on-a-jet-plane)

Mind you, there are also people who will swear up and down that LOST was originally simply a show about people who crashed on an island and their survival there. And now those certain viewers hate how it has become sci-fi and wish it would return to its roots.

All you have to do is google it. People do believe this stuff no matter how far fetch it sounds.

Yeah it's even worse in concert. He's weirdly gross-hot when he looks like a pirate.

That hippie hair back in the day was too much though.

[identity profile] inuyatta.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
They both matured somewhat, but Aang flip-flopped a lot through S3 even though he was always aiming towards the same goal, and Zuko...actually, all of the gaang were really fucking stupid by the end of the series, now that I recall.

I think everyone's maturity was kinda fucked over by the S3 writers, honestly.

129

(Anonymous) 2009-02-24 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
I trim mine whenever I remember. I don't want to totally take everything off, but the trimming keeps everything neater. :)

Commenters to 127: If you know it's just like lesbian porn for guys, why do you accuse everyone who doesn't like it of being homophobes? Maybe the reasons they don't like it are more like the secret poster.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-24 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
Sure is sweeping generalization in here all of a sudden...

118 & 127

[identity profile] paperspades.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Read the "Sex in Japan" section: http://www.reddit.com/r/sex/comments/77uoy/sex_and_flirting_in_japan/

You'll get a better understanding of where the typical seme/uke roles originate from. While mangaka do tend to stereotype, many of the more difficult concepts to grasp from a western viewpoint are based on Eastern/Western cultural differences, not something inherently unrealistic about yaoi manga.

So no, yaoi and shonen-ai do not display realistic western gay relationships. That doesn't mean they can't show realistic eastern gay relationships.

[personal profile] karel 2009-02-24 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. That was incredibly interesting (though it did invoke an "Oh my god, how difficult!" reaction at first, I will admit, but it's obviously a cultural thing and I wouldn't feel that way if I'd been brought up my whole life in that way)! Thank you so much for sharing!

155

[identity profile] madamemystical.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly I thought they became the same person by the end of the series. But that's a comment on the writers and the writers' intentions, not on the characters themselves.

104, 111

[identity profile] trinity-destler.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
104: Oh thank God I'm not the only one. I had no inkling until I watched the special features.

111: Dude, Rik Mayall is really hot. And very pretty. He just hides it well by cutting his hair stupid and making ridiculous faces all the time. Although, I don't know why you'd have a crush on Rick the character... but The Young Ones is MADE OF AWESOME, so any reason to watch it is a good reason.

Also 149

And :)

[identity profile] dagnirovanaliel.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
131. Same here. Halfway through the pilot I realised I would join. I would do it. Kind of a creepy thought.

168. About a month ago my dad walked in while I was watching Keith. He stood there for a while, then turned to me and said, "you know he's deranged, right?" And I said, "yes, of course, that's why I watch him." While I don't deny that there are people who believe he is an excellent source of news... he's entertaining. I can't say the same about O'Reilly because his views are so polar-opposite to mine that I can't watch for longer than a couple minutes without wanting to punch a wall.

127

[identity profile] kribban.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
And what has your sexual preference got to do with it? It's not about you, it's about us. We, the fangirls who find pleaseure and happiness in Yaoi an immense turn on. It's not about you, or people like you. Don't take it personal.

[identity profile] fivil.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
127. That's yaoi. Most slash I've read or come across does not really have top/bottom conventions.

116, 157, 161

[identity profile] puppy-tenchan.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
116: Now you have ;)

157: As an old school fan, I say: please! Go ahead and enjoy the hot! There is nothing wrong with hot!

161: Honestly, I was really disappointed as well, especially after some of the other release forms that ranged from unique and creepy to unique and hot.

127

(Anonymous) 2009-02-24 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, somebody answer this for me, because I seriously do not get this.

The fact that men have "male privilege" has been offered up repeatedly as a justification for why female-created, female-centric yaoi porn involving two men in seme/uke roles is morally acceptable. Women need places where they can fetishize men in the same way that women are fetishized by men, etc. I guess I get that.

This raises two questions for me:

1. A clarifying question: since women do not have "female privilege" in the same way that men have "male privilege," is typical male-created, male-centric pornography of fetishized lesbians more morally wrong than yaoi?

2. How does the fact that gay men have "male privilege" somehow beat out the fact that they do not have "heterosexual privilege"? Since when did it get decided in the Oppression Olympics that straight women have it worse than gay men? In fetishizing gay men, why is it more important that they are men than that they are homosexual?

*presents credentials from the university of my ass*

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
I've never bought that excuse, if only because it seems to be putting far too much thought into the matter. A better one might be that it's women idealizing (a specific form of) the male body where previously they weren't allowed to do so before--it's not so much a reaction to male privilege as a result of the lessening of it to the point where we can actually do this stuff.

And while I can't speak for yaoi, the vast majority of slash uses men who were not presented as homosexual in canon. That might be what they're picking up on there.

And I still think O'Reilly's a douchebag.

129 ~ The Novella Response

[identity profile] plainjanejones0.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
129. I think it's not as prevalent today as it was, say, five or so years ago. Back in the days when even a lot of the metrosexuals were getting waxed from the collar bone down. Thankfully, that phase is mostly over. I know some men who had laser hair removal on their bodies and now regret it.

I generally shave my legs and pubic hair everyday, or at least every other day. Though, there have been times I've been lazy about it, and I can say that I've never experienced the itching that some people are mentioning beyond the first couple of times I did it. A good exfoliator helps, but it's not a cure all for everyone.

I've tried waxing before. It's okay, not as painful as you'd think. The problem is that body hair grows in at different rates, so not everything is pulled everytime. I've heard it gets better after you've been doing it for a few months, but I'm impatient. I like my body to stay smooth.

120 - fuck yessss she is my favourite character ilher so much

160 - lmao for a moment there I was like "wtf why is draco there" damn you luxord and your apparent lack of facial hair in that picture

129. TMI: I don't shave anywhere. Which completely disgusts a lot of people but quite frankly, I don't give a damn. Every now and then if I have to do something where I can't wear pants I will.

And it's interesting that more people go unshaved because in all of the shows and movies I've seen where women are naked, they're always shaved.

news flash, geniuses.

yaoi/slash is not written for the enjoyment of gay men. it's written for women to enjoy.

and believe it when I tell you not everyone is so deluded into thinking it is representative of ZOMG GHEY MENZ. really. we know. really we do.

some of us know from FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE!

-an GHEY MANZ yaoi/slash writer who enjoys his escapist hobby of writing 'fag hag' enjoyed material.

161. HAHAHA, what has Bleach become after I stopped reading it a couple of years ago?

175. Man, your ex-friend is an idiot :D You're better off without her.

[identity profile] gaslight-1975.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
104. Not as pretty as Dave Foley in his heyday, but still...pretty darn convincing. :P

109. I'm glad I stopped watching this show before Season 2 ever ended, because it sounds like it's become a hodgepodge of touchy themes with no point. The whole mystical crap with Eko and Locke is what turned me off in the first place. I was so sick of those two.

118. You mean that Jack/Ianto pic is real and not a crappy manip? Ianto's head looks like it's being eating by his shoulders by a bad paste job.

142. I think she's one of the most beautiful women on the outside to have ever lived.

159. lmao

167. I've considered it. Books that are way old and aren't on Google Books free view so people can't hunt down the plagiarism? Very tempting. Haven't succumbed yet, tho.

168. No disagreement here. I like Keith & watch O'Reilly as a kind of trainwreck performance art. But KO is full of himself - I mean, every time he's tangentially related to a news story (i.e., filling in for McCain on Letterman, brief exchange with Capt. Sullenberger), he flogs it for all it's worth. He chooses to participate in the Fox News vs. NBC pissing contest and while I can totally appreciate the immaturity, his willingness to then throw stones & claim higher ground is totally dishonest. And when he gleefully labels people "Worst Persons" when knuckleheads like Scarborough and Tweety at his own network have done worse things to qualify? Not a peep. I know contractually he can't (although he did take CNBC Rick Santelli to task, but that's a first after way too long), but the segment should be renamed "Egregious Shit That I Am Not Contractually Obligated To Ignore."

[identity profile] lipsofpoison.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
117. While I wouldn't have said it with such severity as I'm fond of the character, I do think parts of what Tim said were very justified and I don't think it's fair that people are blind to it.

154. I know exactly what you mean.

[identity profile] rainaria.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
133. But I love Gwen! And I ship Arthur/Merlin. I like to think that in the real one, Merlin died and asked Arthur to take care of her for him, cause she's like his best friend and like a sister to him. So, Arthur married her to make sure he'd be able to, for Merlin. ♥ Hey, a girl can dream, can't she? Haha~
164. So do I.
