Well, it's pretty and all, but any expectation I had that a plot might develop was killed by a sex scene thrown into the first 20 pages. I just assume it's not meant to be anything but porn, which is fine. I can enjoy pretty space porn.

It's not so much killing female characters, which is fine, but the way in which people do it: killing off the female character not because of her own actions or as a natural end to her storyline, but purely to give the male characters angst. Women in Refrigerators (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WomenInRefrigerators) is the usual term. The fact that it's comic book-originated (and Dr Horrible is built on comic book tropes) and fairly well-known in feminist circles means that Whedon's either aware of it or living under a rock. Whether Penny fits the definition is variable mileage, of course.

152. Really hoping this is a troll. If it isn't: OP, I really hope you don't go spreading this around, because chances are your friend's suicide was not "because L died," whatever made you think that, though it might have been vaguely, tangentially related in some way.

My (thankfully unsuccessful) suicide attempt happened right after I accidentally dropped and broke a ceramic bowl. I did not try to kill myself because of a bowl. I tried to kill myself because I was fucked up in the head and I believed that my life was pointless and the future held nothing for me, and I had felt that way for a long, long time beforehand. I was already in one of my lowest, most vulnerable states when the bowl incident happened, and — because, as I said earlier, I was fucked up in the head - I subconsciously took it as a symbolic confirmation of everything I was already thinking, and out came the pills.

We've seen plenty of secrets here from people whose lives were saved by small, seemingly insignificant things. When people are on the very edge and about to lose it completely, they're vulnerable, and the weirdest things can tip the balance either way.

I just want to say "thank you" and "this so much" with the fire of a thousand suns.
