161. That bothers me to a lesser extent - if they're using "Yami" just as shorthand in the narration but don't have any of the characters call him by it, it doesn't bother me at all. It's not something that completely throws me out of a fic, either; I just find it mildly irritating.

Also, bare in mind the fact that you're entering the fandom during 'down time' between series. The fandom is significantly sludgier at the moment (and getting sludgier still) than it was at its peak while the series was still airing. A lot of the better writers have packed up and headed for greener pastures waiting for the second series to air - there are good fics still being written but they're coming fewer and further between than they were and most of what is left is cheap and cheerful. Plus, you've come into the fandom without the benefit of experiancing the development of the community while the show was airing - the evolution of in-jokes about the cast, the insta-squee threads, the meta, the discussion, the longer, better fics being established. *shrug* If it's not for you it's not for you but a) that isn't MY experiance of the fandom AT ALL and b)you haven't exactly caught us at our most creative here.

It's certainly not the best out there, but the show is addicting regardless. Just a sidenote, Nina (the blonde girl) is a very flawed character, selfish, reckless, inferiority complex especially towards the main protagonist (which is unique enough on its own), nevertheless her flaws are always treated seriously and is used as a foil as a means for development towards the main guy and viceversa.

1) To be fair, while Japanese middle schoolers don't (usually) look 20, they most definitely don't look 12 either...

2) They were originally supposed to be in high school; I forget why Konomi dropped them down to middle school (probably to appeal to a wider audience, since a large portion of Japanese TeniPuri fans are in middle school and early high school).
