148 - you know, i remember feeling that way, when i was like 12 and just getting into internet fandom. i remember thinking '25? wth, youre 25 and writing fanfic? get a life!' now at age 23 i have to say that i now find the notion completely ridiculous. i HAVE a life! im studying in a foreign country (lol NOT japan), i have a fantastic job waiting for me when i graduate, and awesome friends. but sometimes, i get bored with it, i get annoyed with it, and its fun to let the problems of fictional characters distract me from my own. its escapism and its damn fun. it doesnt make me pathetic, and i dont think that in a few years, it will suddenly make me pathetic either. do i think that there are people that let it take over their lives too much? yes. but to say that because youre over 30 and single and have a cat it automatically makes you sad is.....well, that's pretty sad in itself. age is just a number, we all like things for different reasons, and thats what makes fandom so much fun.

Sounds like you're judging someone based on their behavior rather than their affiliation. Congratulations--that makes you a good (or at least decent) person.

I like Gaius well enough, but I don't see how he's more sympathetic than Nimueh/less deserving to die. Nimueh stood against Uther's tyranny while Gaius stood by and facilitated Uther killing his fellow sorcerors. He's no better than she is, but I think the writers actually intended for us to think that good had prevailed and I don't think it's that simple.

...it really has nothing to do with her looks, though. LOL.

I'd have been fine if neither of them had died, but one of them obviously had to. And I think it would've been more satisfying dramatically and emotionally if he had instead.

148: So... it's only okay to like fandom if you're young? Where's the logic in that? (I'm 22 btw.) I actually prefer fic from older women because it's more intelligent and well-written (the Harry Potter fandom especially had a lot of this!) Most of the shittiest fic is from little girls (I check their profiles and it's usually true). By saying that liking fandom makes you pathetic when you're older, you're also saying that somehow liking fandom makes you pathetic (but that it's okay when you're young? Wtf.) Just because you like fandom doesn't mean you have nothing else in your life. Even if you don't have anything else going on in your life, it doesn't mean you have nothing to contribute to the fandom. The whole point of fandom is for people to come together with all kinds of other people who share your interests. I for one will always enjoy fandom, thank you very much.

119. Yeah, pretty much total agreement as far as the movie version goes, but only because I was kinda butthurt when I first heard the original cast after the Hamburg one that Michael Crawford was the phantom. I can't stand his voice.

I know it probably shows my ignorance and lack of graphic novel knowledge, but this scene made me kinda want to stand in front of the cinema and distribute BDSM awareness and women's shelter leaflets because even though the fandom probably knows how to deal with this scene, there are kids on one Harry Potter message board I'm on who thought this was sexy and romantic for real, all, "they had a child together, so it was ok!".

119. I think the Phantom's more twisted and thus more interesting. He probably ties up Christine and puts her in a wedding dress all made up, then rapes her. Raoul would just hug Christine, have gentle and loving sex... but be very boring in comparison.

Unfortunately, fandom tends to have it the other way around, which is why I've never bothered with it.

The difficulty of being a female hero in a world full of men with his attitude who simultaneously reward and punish women for their perceived sexual availibility is the thing she's struggled with so much, and he's the absolute worst of that.
