I like that idea - a *lot*! I think that's genius. :¬)

[identity profile] nirejseki.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
119. Oh for the love of god...why do people get so obsessed about Erik's "wrong" behavior?! Erik is a SERIAL KILLER, so OF COURSE his behavior is weird. In the book, he actually says "I just wanted a nice little wife I could take out on Sundays...I wanted to be like everyone else, with a nice little wife I could take out on Sundays." That is the basis of the musical, with some romance elements added in, so OF COURSE it's creepy and wrong. It's supposed to be. The fact is that the guy playing Phantom is usually a much better actor/singer than the guy playing Raoul (because, well, one is the main part and the other one is second fiddle), so fans tend to sympathise with Erik.

But seriously, why do YOU, OP, even care that people write it that way? Don't like it, skip it. Their writing of their idealized characters (a "nice" Erik and a "mean" Raoul for Erik to rescue Christine from) is none of your business; it's exactly what ALW is trying to get with his depiction of the characters. Or, better yet, you don't think people should write fic with one character being creepy and wrong? Get out of the Phantom fandom, because unless you're looking for nice Raoul/Christine fic, a lot of it is going to be about Erik, and Erik has issues.

...yeah, and that comment about the movie cast being better than the Broadway? Troll. So obvious troll. You threw that in at the end because you know people go ballistic about that. You're entitled to your opinion, but if you've just made a big long secret bashing the main character of a show THEN you throw in something that you know people get annoyed about...that's just trying to be obnoxious.

*shakes head* I need to work on how loquacious I am! It only took one minute to write, but that's all I'm willing to waste on this secret.

125. Yes, thank you! I like my characters to be strong and have personality. If it's a woman, then I like her. If it's a man, I like him. If the show has no interesting women characters, I don't like them. It's the fault of the writers for not making them interesting enough, not mine for not liking them. *snarl*

133. Heh, yes, I see your problem. But really, if they haven't done anything bad, then just relax, let it go. Judge people on their own merits, OP! ^_^

106 - I wish more people would mention what fandom they were talking about too.

116 - =/

120 - OH HELL NO. GAIUS > LIFE.

121 - Just remember that 99.999994% of books don't really have anything resembling a fandom.

130 - Aww :DDD You know, I ship it, but I love and adore their canon relationship (if not more than what I read in fics, quite often)

141 - What.

146 - It doesn't say anything bad about you. If anyone says you're a homophobe because you don't get turned on by it, then they're a moron.

148 - Watch as that's going to be you, pff. Seriously though, just cause someone is in fandom it doesn't mean that it's their entire life. They probably have enough hobbies. It doesn't matter what age you are, if you think being in fandom is pathetic, then it ought to be pathetic no matter your age.

159 - You can be in fandom and not have it be your life, you know. Good luck with the rest of your life, though.

LOL! Sorry. I like Gaius but one of them had to go, and I wish the writers hadn't had to tie everything up in a bow by killing her just because Merlin couldn't take the consequences of his actions. It's dramatically unsatisfying and Merlin needs to learn. Besides, how is Gaius less shady than Nimueh for standing by while Uther committed genoicide?

(Anonymous) 2009-03-30 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
133. You are not elitist. Nobody wants those people in their fandom.

136. Considering Silk Spectre herself seems to be in love with him, *and* had a child with him, the pairing is not without a certain kind of romance.

139. Robin Williams is a disgusting talentless old pervert and I would have wept angry tears of blood if he had been allowed to play any part in the movie based on my favourite comic.

165. I-I'd be interested to hear your reasons on the Hiiragis...
Though well, in general, I always say "if I can see it happening, I ship it". Ariel and Mariel from Summon Night? Probably. Edward and Alphonse from FMA? Nah, I just don't see it. Yuuma and Yuuna from Pani Poni Dash? THEY'RE NOT FOOLING ANYONE.
So you see, I believe you when you say that.

140. Oye... you're right. I haven't seen every single episode yet but there was always something about Rory that I could never really get into, but yeah. This. She's one of those characters who isn't horrible per se but they just get everything they want and their dilemmas just warrant a big ole "Cry me a river".

118. I think that's the second Dosteoevsky secret this week. Awesome.

128. Yeah, that sort of thing is the reason I call myself an agnostic; no matter how much I think there isn't really anything beyond the material world, I can never bring myself to actually believe it, because I want so much to be able to explore new worlds after death. Why can't I find the off-switch for wishful thinking?

144. Buh?. I can understand Twilight haters loving some of the minor characters (I probably would if I had the fortitude to read the whole book, judging from what I've read about Alice) but that seems really odd.

146. I don't think it necessarily says anything. I don't like any kind of smut, but when I'm skimming through smutty writing to get to the romantic bits, I'm far less likely to get squicked by girl/girl than I am by boy/girl, and less likely to get squicked by either of those than by boy/boy. I'm also an active member of my campus's LGBTQ coalition, and all my best guyfriends are gay or bisexual.

You know how when you have questionable kinks, it doesn't reflect badly on you unless you let it affect the way you behave in real life? Same goes for squicks.

148. Being single at thirty makes you a loser if you're a woman? FAIL. I'd have cut you some slack if you'd said "over thirty and leeching off their parents," though that would still have been unkind, but to say that a woman living on her own and working to support herself and her hobbies is a "loser" because she has failed to find herself a man is blatantly misogynistic.

151. How do you feel about guy singers whining about their girl problems?

157. Setting aside the issue of waiting for any guy to save you, is the song about that Romeo? Because falling in love with that guy is more likely to make everything ten times worse.

...in fact, I'm trying to think of a Shakespeare character who does fit the Prince Charming archetype, and drawing a blank. I guess there's Cordelia's husband from King Lear, but he gets, like, two lines, and he likes her because she's so strong and independent.

128

[identity profile] georgeslymaniv.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the opposite. I really want to believe in an afterlife because I think it would be much better and it would make me happier, but I can't bring myself to.

119. Yeah...but that's kind of the point, though, isn't it? If people want to play with an unhealthy ship - even twisting it to OCC-ness to make it happy - why should OP care so much? Doesn't that happen in every fandom? (and I say this as someone who has never and will never ship Erik/Christine)

If it's Cassandra Claire - it isn't just the good punch lines she copied, it's whole scenes, concepts, settings, themes. And her original fiction is incredibly blah. So don't give her too much credit.

In fact, don't give plagiarists too much credit in general. If you like their work, go look up the sources they're copying, because that's where the true awesome lies.

Re: 109

[identity profile] nirejseki.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconded SO MUCH. I lose respect completely for plagiarists - the only good thing about them, ever, is that occasionally you'll find true gold when you find what they stole from.

151. I'm sorry, but I get so irritated by people who write off entire genres of music or movies or whatever. Especially if it's something like country music or chick flicks. I feel like they're only avoiding such things because they're considered 'uncool'. :/ Taylor Swift isn't the only country singer who has good songs. You should give more of it a chance - especially if you (secretly) like some of Taylor Swift.

...sorry, that was a relatively misplaced rant. I just get irked by blanket statements. :x

[identity profile] riviyan-questa.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
I think it is fine to not like a genre of music or movies. For example, I don't like country music (like the OP, lol). It's not because it's uncool (given where I live, I'm in a minority NOT liking it), I just honestly don't like the things that make country music country music. I'm fine that people do like it, and I have a great deal of respect for country music artists, I think they are generally more musically talented than a lot of pop 'artists.' I just don't care for the music style. I'm not even saying the songs are bad, I just don't like the music. Maybe I will like it at some time in the future, I'm not entirely opposed to that. But right now, I don't and I don't think there's anything wrong with that at all. I should be allowed to like what I like, and dislike what I dislike.
