139. Paddy Considine as Rorschach?
I would've jizzed in my pants.
162. I completely agree. Stories like Watchmen are hard to come by and there's so, so much to discuss, it's a pity to let it go to waste by concentrating only on the shipping/porn.

hope you die before you get oldddd ....

148. Unfortunately, the only solution to your problem when you reach 29 will be to drop dead. Might I suggest not bothering to wait?

PS: When did fandom become an episode of "Logan's Run"?

148: I just wanted to say something about this secret, something I'm not sure a lot of people think about:
Not everyone has the same circumstances as you. There are people out there who, for one reason or another, are pretty much stuck at home. Maybe they're sick (like, with a long-term, chronic illness) or disabled. For them "getting a life", in the way the OP means, is NOT an option. Leaving the house might be difficult for them. So they hang out on the internet. There, they can interact with other people, and share their interests with like-minded people. The internet may, in fact, be one of the ONLY connections to the outside world. It's not the same as face to face contact, but at least they're getting SOME social/human interaction so they don't feel so alone.
Just something to think about.

Re: 148

(Anonymous) 2009-03-31 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
a friend of mine (who had a terminal, debilitating illness) just recently died. it was difficult for her to leave the house and her contact with the outside world was through the internet because her 'real life' friends were too uncomfortable being around her.

she was 24 when she died.

IOW, agreed.

103. DAMN RIGHT IT WILL. That sexy sexy trailer left me flailing in anticipation. And you know what? I think the Lost Canvas anime is exactly what the fandom needs to shake up the staleness that's taken over.

164. HAHA OH WOW. OP had me loling for a good while.

[identity profile] tokinokanatae.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
103. I'm excited too. I just hope people aren't so entrenched in a certain vision of Saint Seiya to give it a chance. Most fans I know are pretty pumped, though.

130. If you are not Neth, HELLO ANOTHER ONE! Join the apparently very tiny club of people who like them better without having sex! :D

133. From what I can tell, while "crazy" sometimes really does mean HOLY SHIT YOU REALLY SHOULD BE IN A SPECIAL HOME... sometimes it really just means "someone who has bigger thoughts in their head than Rpattz, macros, and feminazism." Alternately, sometimes it's just really fun to fuck with people who take you that damn seriously despite not knowing a thing about you. I had your same experience with someone who became one of my closest online friends. I wouldn't worry too much.

135. I'm marginally curious. I kind of liked the first season. I didn't see a whole lot of the second, though I know how it ended. Crucify me, but I liked it that way, even though it was totally exactly the way they ended the FIRST season, but with a bigger cliffhanger. Or something. Whatever. I want a pet Much. ;D

[identity profile] bazcat89.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
140. I adore Chilton!Rory, but from the second half of season 5 onwards I really couldn't stand what a snooty little...thing she had become. It's okay though because Paris and Emily were my favorite things about that show and they stayed consistently awesome, even when the writers started falling into insanity.

Yeah, I liked her for the first 5 seasons too. I think my intense hate for her from that point on colors my view of her when I rewatch the earlier seasons. It also doesn't help that Alexis was one of the weaker links in the cast.

119. Um okay, what about the fans who like it for the fucked-up dynamics? :/

121. I love how all these people think that they’re going to have a fandom for their novel. Here’s a protip: You almost definitely won’t.

146. I…am the same. D:

159. Good for you, anon. Good for you. :’3

162. Really, you think so? I think there’s much more lulz/meta/gen than porn.

OP 162

(Anonymous) 2009-03-31 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I think for a short time after the movie came out it was lulz and what-not, with some good discussion, but it seems like more and more porn it leaking in, which is what frustrates me. I feel like for the past two weeks all I've been seeing is fics and art revolved around shipping/slash/whathaveyou which is frustrating.

109) Yeah, borrowed humor, unless it's being treated as a meme, kills a writers credibility. Credit is always good.

116) Face/Palm. Even though you managed to dodge the exam bombing bullet, you clearly failed the "am I being a grown up" test. You nearly blew several thousand dollars worth of schooling on a flipping daydream -- and it doesn't bother you? Maybe you need to quit college until you can get out of the high school slacker mindset.

117) I like fics better than classics as well -- and I was an English Teacher (before I became a SAHM). Brain candy or brain brussel sprouts... it's not a hard decision!

125) Guilting people into "liking" characters doesn't work. Either they appeal or they don't -- or they appeal in the canon but the fan just isn't particularly interested in the fanfic or discussions of that character. But regardless, it's emotional, not intellectual, and it's not something someone should feel ashamed about. I mean, fuck it, this is supposed to be entertainment not some moral litmus test.

135) If it's truly a temporary thing, you can make a filter and put all the people who you are reasonably assured aren't going to be posting about this on their journal on it, then only look at that filter for a while.

146) It doesn't say anything about you.

159) Ya know, it's not an either-or. It's completely possible to have a life, and have fandom as something to fill up the hours when you aren't busy with better things.

162) Don't write or read porn or talk about it. Most fics are rated one way or another, it's not that hard to avoid it.

Oh wait, what you are really saying is that you want other people to stop reading and writing the stuff that interests them and pay more attention to you. That's a whole lot of tough. Write something that people want to read and they'll read you. Write boring crap and they'll ignore you. That's always been the rule of writing. Doesn't need to be porn, just exciting.
Edited 2009-03-30 23:11 (UTC)

OP 162

(Anonymous) 2009-03-31 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
That is not at all what I am saying. I do not care if others like smutfic and what have you, I normally ignore it, but I am simply finding it difficult to do so with the focus of the fandom seems to keep centering more and more on porn and less and less on actual topics of discussion.

Way to put words in my mouth.

I agree that the relationship of Erik and Christine is fucked up. However, to say that Erik doesn't love her? Wrong, he loves her. But it's more like what would happen if Boo Radley fell in love with someone, he wouldn't know how to react to the crush or the person. Or, it could just be what happens when someone loves someone too much. Would you accuse Othello of not loving Desdemona? No, I think, the problem was that he loved her too much, in his own words, he was "one that loved not wisely but too well... not easily jealous [ok, in Erik's case, very easily jealous], but being wrought perplex'd in the extreme" (Othello V.II). Yes, it is the mark of maturity and of respect to be able to admit that someone doesn't love you and to let them go. But love? It is more the mark of love to drown oneself in the Seine if turned down by what one believes is one's true love than to continue on or to leave town so as to never have one's shame be seen by one's townfolk again, either way to essentially remove oneself from the picture. Please remember the time and place as well. These were all (with the exception of Raoul who is new to the scene) people who had been raised on theatricality. For crying out loud, this is the same generation (the older ones of them at least) that died or got exiled on the barricades in the Bloody Week because it became apparent that the Third Republic was coming to kill the Commune. Though not the same idea exactly, it is the same theatricality that prompted Erik to threaten Raoul's life and the lives of the Opera House above.

That being said, Erik does have his issues, one of which includes his thought that he's never going to get anyone to even like him on his own merits. Therefore, he behaves in childish way a lot (The way he says, things like "Erik didn't do it," as the Persian is trying to sort out what Erik's done exactly.) Erik does need someone who can be both a parent to him when he needs it and a lover. (Think like Angela Lansbury's Mrs. Lovett to her Sweeney Todd). He also needs someone who can be delighted by his geeking out over tech stuff, or to swat him over the head when he gets too carried away with it. Christine is a petite prima donna: she can't do any of this (lending, of course, the fact that she's sixteen and probably was never expecting to have to deal with Erik). But their match is so bad for both of them that it's not even funny. Christine and Raoul are a better match, and should go off their way and be annoying little creatures together if they want, like a melodramatic Jane and Bingley, with less personality! I personally ship either book!Erik/movie!Mme. Giry, or various other ships, but think that Erik deserves someone with a lot more willpower and personality and a firmer head on his or her shoulders than Christine. Erik's tragedy is that he couldn't chose to have his crush on someone - anyone for that matter - else.
