148: Eh? Every older women I know is into some sort of tv show/book series/whatever. Less common on internet fandoms since they didn't grow up online so much as us Gen-Y folk, but....? Unless you mean the fact that they are single?

(Anonymous) 2009-03-30 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)

101. ... And then they fall apart at one point, trying to outwaggle each other, only to come together in a moment of need where they must waggle in synch to save the day? I'd watch it.

112. I dunno. I always saw "that fan" as someone who DID let their crushes on fictional characters go way way WAY out of line, not those who just had them, which is a faction I have no quarrel with. so really, I think being "that fan" IS something to not aspire to, all in all.

139. Robin Williams as Rorschach... had I not seen Photobooth, I would've never seen it as possible myself, but he just maybe possibly could work the blotmask.

146. That you find thinking about girls more appealing than thinking about boys?

155. Oh, Pain. I must admit, reading him has made some rather interesting questions and dilemmas arise. I'm right there with you aon wanting Naruto to affect him in some other way other than just outright killing him, since if Kishimoto ends this with just a "And then Naruto killed Pain and ALL WAS WELL AGAIN", I think I will rage so hard. Your manga is interesting again Kishi, try and REMAIN interesting now.

164. Hahaha oh wow. "IN THE BEGINNING THERE WAS INCEST. Or just possibly a great big ol' selfcest orgy. Or maybe just furious amounts of masturbation, but then they all split up and became countries and the rest is history." I think I would read a fic about history that started like that.

165. Well, you... sure can't deny that it's just a little bit suspicious when they're all linked by the fact that they ARE all siblings, can you? Except of course the vocaloids who can apparently be cousins or something if that thing I read on the Internet once is true, but still. It kind of stands out. Just a tad.

142. Holy crap, are you me? I was SO BAFFLED that they survived intact. I am so, so, so used to one or both of my OTPs to be ruined--or not even canon. After the whole Six/Tigh thing, I thought for sure that's what I was in for. I hated a lot of things in the ending (as I ranted about in my journal), but basically Six/Gaius working out, at least for a while, totally made me okay with all the rest of the bullshit.

119

[identity profile] tokinokanatae.livejournal.com 2009-03-30 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
119. I don't understand why people want to get on a soapbox about liking "healthy" couples in fandom. Raoul was obviously a better match for her in the end--and I say that as someone who's loved the story since she was about nine years old, and loves Erik--but it IS okay to like a couple that is fucked up and dark and wrong.

And I say that as someone who has trouble shipping unhealthy couples, but that doesn't mean I don't see or understand that there is something to the Erik/Christines of various other fandoms. Love isn't always a walk in the rose garden.

Re: 119

(Anonymous) 2009-03-30 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
True. On the other hand, you can't say that the saturation of stories that promote emotionally abusive relationships as something romantic to which women should aspire isn't a huge frickin' elephant in the room in the case of some ships. Particularly when they build up a fandom which really doesn't see how fucked up the relationship really is.

112: Very well said.

125: I agree with what you're saying, but I think you need to work on your grammar a bit; I almost didn't understand what you meant, there...

Anyway, that so few female characters are so badly developed, and that there are so few of them needs to be talked about. Attacking those who dislikes badly developed characters has sometimes taken a lot more misogynistic expressions than the dislike in and of itself. I mean, how many times have we seen women who hate a female character condemned as "screaming fangirl bitches"?

128: I sometimes envy religious people; it must be comforting to feel certain that there's someone powerful looking out for you and loving you, and forgiving you, not to mention rewarding you at the end of your life if you're good. Sort of like never growing up, always being a child with loving parents. I prefer logic, reasoning, critical thinking, and taking responsibility for my actions, though.

Still, no one knows what happens when you die. I'm hoping for something interesting!

148: Soon to be thirty-one, and my cat lives with my mother at the moment. XD I still manage to have a rich social life, great connections with my family, working on a university degree, and starting up a business enterprise. Having a life doesn't mean you can't have hobbies, you know.

152: I was so fond of the first Ruby that I'm having a bit of a problem with the new one, sadly. But wasn't this the body of someone who died? Didn't she do it specifically ta appease Sam's conscience? (Or is this yet another body? I'm only up to episode six of season four.)

125

(Anonymous) 2009-03-30 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I judge people on how they hate the female characters.

Do they have double standards for the male and female characters.
Do they dismiss all 'femininity' as weakness, annoying etc. etc.
Do they use insults like slut, bitch, cunt etc. etc. rather than valid arguments.
Do they twist the canon to 'prove' why they should be hated.
Is there a pattern with their hate, in that they seem to hate an awful lot of female characters and then go 'but I like Eowyn, so I'm not sexist or misogynistic'. (Eowyn is just an example.)
Do they only stick to canons that a majorly populated by men and then say that the only reason why they hate female characters is because there aren't any well written ones.

I'm sure there are a few other examples!

I don't like all female characters, just like I don't like all male characters but the vehemence and the way that some people go about hating on these characters is... extreme. As such, people will backlash against that and a few innocents get caught in the middle. Try not to take it personally.

110. I kinda weirdly love him too. The banjo skills kinda slay me. And he and Jim are weirdly adorable together--words do not express my love for the "Closer to Fine" singalong. "TUNA! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!" ♥

112. STAGE CRUSH! THANK YOU! I've been running around yelling this for weeks! Good acting is really, really hot! Everyone who's ever done theatre for more than two seconds knows this. (I personally was tearfully, chest-poundingly over-the-top in love with the dude who played Napoleon when I did "Animal Farm." And once we got offstage I was like "...eh...not so much.") That's why those damn artsy kids are always hooking up and having drama. The character is super-intense and he played it wonderfully and that leads to some sort of chemical-brain thing where they just become insanely attractive, and there's nothing at all wrong with that. I applaud this secret.

115. And then I will clamp my face in a George Foreman grill. And I don't even watch AI.

116. Good God, he is magnificent. (...But how do the two things relate?)

119. I've always been slightly embarrassed at how much I ship them, because a lot of what you say is true--but really, ever since Twilight came around I feel a lot better. At least PotO owns the daddy-issues concept. I mean, it's right there. And he doesn't carry her around on his back. D: So, you know, not as bad in that light. And Raoul's a twit, but Patrick Wilson KILLED me and actually made me love the character. And ITA that movie cast >>>> B'way cast, since Christine's supposed to be a frickin' young, naive ingenue, and Sarah Brightman has this insane, powerful, seasoned soprano that just does NOT work. And I hate Michael Crawford, and as discussed I want to marry Patrick Wilson and have lots of sex and babies. The end.

121. Hee, I like this. I have totally considered the fandom that will of course spring up when I published my awesomesauce original fiction (lolnotreally) and I actually find myself writing it to give theoretical non-canon shippers some fodder. (Like, I have a straight male who's very close friends with a gay male, and while the love story with the straight guy and his girl is fairly paramount, I totally also 'ship' the two guys, and I write it so that it could work as well, kinda. ...OK I need to stop talking now.)

122. "I Dream" used to make me cry. O_____o

127. Oh, Jesus, you're killing me. :\ You very well might be right. I bawled over that documentary. (At least The Rum Diary's finally kicking off!)

131. I would not say no to that. At all.

136. I kinda ship it too, honestly, because of this moment right ovah here (http://i42.tinypic.com/330ve5f.png). I mean, look at the way they're looking at each other. I don't think it's a "rape is totes sexy" thing, I think they're just really extreme people who actually managed to find a connection, at least for a short time. JDM said he thought Sally was the only woman he ever loved, but he was so fucked up he didn't know how to handle it, and I think that's quite true. (My fallback argument: Luke and Laura did it first on that damn show, and everyone was fine with it then!!)

140. THANK YOU. OH MY GOD. She turned into the most annoying fucking Sue in the history of the world. I was thrilled beyond words when Mitchum said "you don't have it," because she really, really, really does not. Really, she basically got everything she ever wanted--Chilton, Yale, Dean, Jess, Logan, Marty (kinda), scholarships, valedictorian, a car, head editorship thing, total spoiled treatment from her grandparents when her mother didn't support her moronic choices...UGH. I love S1-5 like whoa, but the show jumps the shark for me in "The Prodigal Daughter Returns"--mostly because of April, of course, because I cannot forgive that, but I was disgusted at the way Lor was parading her around going "Rory's back!" and everyone was falling down in delight as if she was just back from frickin' 'Nam instead of just back from an epic bitch fit. And I really loved her early on. Hatehatehate. (Just pretend S6-7 didn't happen; that's what I do.)

[omg wtf two-part comment; shut up already]

144. I'm a pretty hardcore lolfan, and she's kinda the only one I liked in the movie. The kicky-pitch thing plus jumping on that guy and tearing his head off--that's my kinda woman.

146. Eh, that's all right--there's a difference between being a huge homophobe and just have preferences in fiction.

148. Uh, Judgey-Wudgey was a bear, to quote Sex and the City. Why does it matter if they're single? Not all women think they need a man (or a woman) to complete them. And cats are wonderful. At least fangirls care about something instead of spending time judging everyone else. >:\

151. Same here, exactly...except I kinda like all of them. D:

157. Srsly.

158. Well, it's not your fault, she kinda...invited major voyeurism. I'm very sorry two boys lost their mother and I think it's great that she spread awareness about cancer screenings, but the whole thing felt really invasive and unseemly to me at times. I mean, if she's the sort of person who'd go on Big Brother in the first place, you know...? I hope she rests in peace, though, no matter what.

162. I see your point. It's a pretty gritty, hardcore story and some cathartic fucking would probably be good for some of these crazy bitches, but at the same time, part of what makes it awesome is that the characters are so well-developed, and you'd think people would take advantage of that and write other things.

125. We have different tastes in characters, but agreed. You aren't obligated to like a character solely for her gender, rather you like a character because of her, well, character.

146. It means that you don't like slash, that's all. If you start going on about how slash is icky and evil, I have words for you, but if not? Preferences are preferences, and ultimately we're in fandom for entertainment, not to read fic that does nothing for us.

As an aside, can people please stop saying 'girl' and 'boy' for adults? You're writing slash, not fic with 'boykissing,' or het, not fic that contains 'boyparts and girlparts.'

154. It's not dead, bb; there are still prompts getting filled. But it probably won't pick up completely til next spring.

166. Not seen the old BSG, but agreed. I can't get into sci-fi shows unless there's camp and lulz to be found. And BSG was just so dark and humorless that it was a chore to watch.

112. To be honest, I have no problem with people have a crush on a fictional character. I'll admit that I found the movie Rorschach attractive myself. However, it's not healthy to be so incredibly obsessed with a fictional character that you delude yourself and even start asking if they would like you in real life. It just leads to severe cases of depression and low self-esteem. Trust me, I know.

119. Actually, I love the pairing, but that's only because of the reasons you hate it. Don't get me wrong, I do think Christine made the better choice, and it really pissed me off when people hate Raoul for character traits they invented in their own head, but I happen to find screwed-up pairings far more interesting than healthy ones.

136. Again, can never resist a screwed-up relationship. I really need to see a therapist.

148- Who the hell are you to declare an age limit on fandom? You may have cut some wonderful people off your flist, all because of your obvious ageist hangups. Just remember sweetie, someday you'll be thirty too.

Pah, they're probably an over-30 man angry no woman wants to fuck him. Hee.

(Seriously, I know some under-30 women with no cats, and some over-30 married and parental women on LJ who scare me with their fannish devotion FAR more than most of the over-30 singles I've friended. Why the generalization? There are assholes in every demographic.)

148: Given your attitude, I don't think they'll be too upset about that, you sad little fuck.

158: How she died is terrible - but for fuck's sake, it's like suddenly the gurning, ugly, gobby, racist, pig-ignorant little turd has not only become Mother fucking Teresa, she's also the first woman ever ever ever to die of cervical cancer. I'm sick of still seeing her all over the covers of every single fucking magazine on the racks. That she died at such a ridiculously young age and left 2 beautiful little boys behind *is* a tragedy, but can we *please* get a bit of perspective here?

Have you thought of asking your flist RH fans to make a filter and not to include you on it? There's no way you can quietly defriend them, btw - LJ always snitches... *g*

What do you mean? I seriously never have the slightest clue who friends/defriends me unless they announce it on an unlocked post on a day I happen to be reading.

I've been living alone for some time now. I've been holding a job, paying rent, creating art, taking care of my cat, and being nerdy as I see fit, and this makes me a loser? What, was I supposed to die of an overdose when I was doing the punk thing in my early twenties?

Fuck that.

Huh. It's like a quarter of all the secrets here are repeats.
