The kicker for me is that my brother does have a tight group of friends who all met as kids.

*sighs* Big mood, OP. I've had a group of friends when I was in high school, but we lost contact and I've failed to make any new substantial friendships since then. And I mean, yeah, this is extremely common, but some people do have these kinds of tight-knit friend groups even as adults and I'm just incredibly jealous.

The solution to this is to make a lot of acquaintances, put effort into the relationships that feel good, and maybe the magic will happen. Which, of course, rarely gets shown in the media. Fair enough; I wouldn't want to watch some poor sod go through the all the awkwardness and discomfort of friendship-building either.

Same here, I had sort of set my hopes on my friends from college sticking together. I think more people lack friends/friend groups than you'd guess, especially close ones. But for most it's because they had kids and didn't have the time. I'm single so don't even really have that excuse.

I lost touch with my best friend from high school and I still wonder how she's doing from time to time. On the plus side, I reconnected with one of my friends from elementary school and we're super close now.

I honestly don't remember anyone I was friends with before HS. And those friends in HS were 100% 'hey we share classes together and have some stuff in common enough to hang out outside of school' I have one friend that I've been friends with for 18 years and that's it, I didn't think this was unusual.

Same here. It's mostly colleagues in my life... but then I guess that makes sense cause I spent most of my day at work.
I do have a few internet friends I talk to daily, but everyone I used to be friends with at school is gone from my life (I do admit that it's very much my fault, too).

From my perspective, I am thankful for having 2-3 friends of 15-plus years whom I care for dearly and talk to occasionally (since adult life is busy for everyone), everyone else I don't care much for. I am usually the first to sever ties when something goes awry, because I would rather have no friends than bad friends at this point.

Old childhood and high school friends are the main reasons I'm on Facebook. We moved internationally when I was a child, so having any sort of lasting bonds like that flitted out the window. I can tell you where exactly one of my high school friends is today because she found me on Facebook.

I thought I had strong bonds with my high school friends, got cancer in my early 20s and got ghosted by every single one of them. So that was fun.

Totally feel you here! I consider that media gave me very unrealistic expectation of tight knit friendship groups. Then again, I also see people like that, they're just not me. I'm always the forgettable one, so unless I work super hard, most of my friendships drift. Or other times I come off as overkeen trying to maintain them, but I know if I don't they will lapse. I adore my friends dearly, just wish it was easier to make and keep them.

The good news is you CAN make close friends later. I lost contact with a lot of childood friends, but realized later this is because they wee a bad match, and we were friends mostly through circumstance.

I tried being adult friends with my school friends, especially those I grew up with and went to all my schooling with...

I couldn't do it. We are just way too different. And I think, for me, a lot of it is because I actually *left* our hometown and got to see other places, meet more people and the majority of them, didn't.

It must be so surreal to be an actor who has mostly played comedic relief side roles to suddenly gain a huge fandom in his late-40s through a single lead role that allowed him to handle more drama and depth than he'd usually be permitted. It's honestly really heartwarming as a FotC fan who agrees that Murray is the best part

And I'm eternally single, so I've definitely wondered about what kind of influence a potential partner would have on my fandom life, but also what kind of influence my fandom life is having on my (lack of a) love life.
