From yesterday's general comments...

(Anonymous) 2022-12-18 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Just a note for the anon who wanted to argue that essential oils were harmless. For some applications, yes. But in the context of MLMs (which are themselves an awful scammy pyramid scheme that takes money from people who likely cannot afford it), people aren't saying "Hey, buy some of these special essential oils, they'll make your house smell nice!"

They're saying stuff like, "Oh, you're feeling sick? Lost your sense of taste and smell? Try some essential oils! Put them on your pets and in your food! You don't need Big Pharma, just use this 100% natural product!" That's not harmless.. Some essential oils are toxic to cats and dogs, and any time someone's failing to seek medical care because they're trying to cure their illness with essential oils, harm is being done.

And again, MLMs are a shitty, shitty scam.

I don't know what reason there is for MLMs even being legal. I wish some political party would just crack down on all of the MLMs, the grifters, the petty conmen, the telemarketers and spammers and scam messengers, all of it.

Speaking of essential oils and predatory practices, the FDA has been going after companies due to various distributor claims.

Re: From yesterday's general comments...

Wait, that's me but I wasn't trying to argue that they are harmless at all. All I was saying, and stand by, as someone who uses them, is that, unless you're allergic, applying on your skin (or smelling) a small amount of essential oil is probably not going to harm you in the long run. (Keyword: you - I don't live with pets so I wasn't thinking of them but you're right about that)

Again, no idea about "context of essential oils MLMs" because they are NOT a thing where I live. Propaganda is never harmless, but that's propaganda not essential oils.

But this seems to be a very "where do you speak from?" kind of debate. Since I was forced to take meds that never helped me and natural approaches seemed to work better for me it's a personal experience thing. But I was forced to take them, so I know what it's like to hear shit from the other side: "you're NEVER getting better without these lab-created expensive chemicals with well-known harmful side-effects" etc. So I have a lot of feelings and thoughts about that kind of discourse. Of course pyramid scheming is never good and that doesn't mean I never take an aspirin either.

I honestly don't understand how people fall for shit like that. I mean, stop and think about it for a moment: if any of those things actually worked the way the people selling them claimed, then no one would have cancer or depression or any of the things they supposedly cure because word would get around and everyone would be using them to cure those things!

I didn't see yesterday's thread until today and didn't comment there, but as someone who was raised by hippie parents who believed more in overdosing on supplements and using essential oils than in, say, vaccines... I'm so fucking lucky I'm not dead.

The worst I was ever given internally was tea-tree/melaleuca oil, and that shit will absolutely melt through plastic and also your innards.

Also they got all our drinking water from a horse trough out in the woods labeled "non-potable not for human use" for a decade or so, because the municipal water supply had *gasp* chemicals in it. Dihydrogen monoxide, oh no!

No fluoridated water or toothpaste meant more cavities for kid me than I've had since I could buy my own toothpaste.

I still use a couple herbal remedy type things as an adult—mostly peppermint oil for headaches, and I'm even an idiot and put it on my skin.

But even my "so far left they were halfway to meeting rightwing doomsday preppers from the other side" parents weren't doing some of the shit people pushing alternative medicines do now.

I've had so many right wing coworkers over the years mention buying shit for internal use that should rightfully have the poison control hotline on the bottle.

At least I had a couple of my mom's old herbals from the '60s that described the effects of various plants with a key that ranked stuff by how toxic it was and included little skull and crossbone warnings for stuff that was extra nasty.

These days when I come across books on alternative medicine/essential oils I check the index and if wintergreen and tansy and pennyroyal are mentioned as anything other than NOPE NOPE FUCK NO I assume the author was malicious, an idiot, or both.

Seriously, MLMs are fucking awful. The way they prey on people with the promise of success and money and how they're built on the concept that you can only succeed if you also encourage other people to buy into the pyramid scheme... it might be legal, but it sure ain't ethical.

As for essential oils, they're bullshit for anything other than perfumes and okay, maybe a nice scent might help relax you or make you feel better. If that's all they were marketed for, I'd be fine with it. But I see people on Facebook all the time shilling that crap for everything from dog separation anxiety to COVID and have zero patience with that nonsense.

It's kind of bittersweet, since it's the last book in the series, but the final Cassie Coburn book is coming out in February and I'm both super excited and a bit sad. I've read a lot of Samantha Silver's other books but the Cassie books have been my fav. series of hers for years and I'm a little blue about it ending even as I'm desperate to know how it'll end.

Suikoden remaster, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes... I want to get excited for more games, but there are way too many in my backlog. I guess we can add Xenoblade 3 DLC to the list too, whatever it might turn out to be.

Frankly, my first thought was "nothing" which is just depressing. Honestly I am looking forward to a few things I want to create but unless I start working they are not happening.
My second thought was Tsurune and hopefully it'll inspire me to get back to anime.

What's the appeal?

[personal profile] philstar22 2022-12-19 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Can someone explain to me the appeal of lotto tickets? We had a white elephant exchange at our office christmas party. One of the gifts was a stack of lotto scratch cards. Somehow that was the gift that got stolen the most, the only gift that got maxed-out on steals.

Do people not realize how unlikely it is to win anything on those? I work at a law office, I think I work with fairly intelligent people.

There were some really nice gift options. But people kept going for that one.

LJ DW, Tumblr, Twitter?

Mastodon? Pillowfort? Discord comms?

Where are you finding your fandom activity? What's your impression of these platforms and where do you think the next great fandom platform will be?

I'm still waiting for Xanga to get up and running (although I never did fandom there lol)
