I feel like people have no idea how unbelievably privileged that take is when their first language is English. When you grow up in a country where English isn't the primary spoken language, you get used to reading subtitles because most foreign TV shows don't get dubbed into your language, they just get shown with subtitles. Your choice is either to watch things with subtitles or not watch them at all.

And then native English speakers want to complain about having to read subtitles? Pathetic.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-15 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, yes, the thing is it's easy for you because you're used to it. It's almost like things are easier for people who have been doing them for a long time! It doesn't just apply to reading subtitles. It's like berating an English speaker for having a hard time learning your native language and saying that's privileged and silly because you can speak your language easily. Or sneering at someone who's never ridden a bicycle before for having a hard time and wondering if it's worth it when you've been cycling regularly since you were young.

54% of adults in the US have a literacy below sixth-grade level. Those are generally going to be slower readers. They may not be able to keep up (just like slower readers in other countries can't keep up).

The OP isn't judging people for complaining about subtitles. She's judging people who personally don't like them and choose not to use them. That's a whole different thing.

You don't have to have a disability to have trouble reading.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-15 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no disability that I know of, but I don't like subtitles. I tend to end up reading them (or closed captioning) and not actually paying enough attention to the visuals on the screen, which are pretty important to the viewing experience. I wind up rewinding and rewatching or just missing things which makes for a frustrating time.

Does your friend not read a lot in general? Some people just don't like the act of reading. I'm not saying people shouldn't need to know how to read, but some don't like to do it as a hobby (or part of one) and that's fine actually. Judging people for liking subtitles comes off as the same kind of snobbery as judging people who listen to audiobooks instead of reading them. If it's something you're watching for fun and it involves a task you don't like doing, it's not going to be fun and that defeats the purpose.

I remember it took me a long time to get the knack of reading subtitles while knitting, and I like to do something with my hands while watching tv, so.

Once I could, it was amazing! So many longform shows to watch!

But your friend might be in a similar spot.

I like subtitles, but I do read very quickly and they don't dampen my enjoyment of things. Sometimes I turn them on for English language programs so I don't miss what's being said (or if someone else in the house is being a bit noisy).

But have you considered that this could be an excuse because your friend isn't interested in some foreign media that you rec?

People have tried to get me to watch Cdramas and I do not care about them in the least and don't want to watch Cdramas. I could see using this excuse if someone is INSISTING that I watch something I don't want to check out.

...but I like Kdramas.

I don't watch things with subtitles, basically ever. It's not because I dislike reading or I don't like things from other cultures. It's because watching something with subtitles requires it to be your primary focus. And 99% of the time, I want whatever I'm watching to be more in the background.

I personally love subtitles as a lot of dubbed things are dubbed terribly.

However, subtitles can take a lot of focus sometimes, especially when you are feeling stressed or anxious, or you're watching shows while you are doing other things (cleaning, looking after kids, cooking etc), or are you aren't used to subtitles, or have trouble reading at a pace required for subtitles. There are all kinds of reasons why subtitles are not for everyone. No one should be judged for not wanting to use them.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-16 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who prefers watching any foreign media in its native language + subtitles, I have to agree with a lot of the commenters here--there's a lot of reasons besides disability for someone to not want to watch something subtitled. Slow reading is a possibility (I read pretty fast and sometimes subtitles go by too fast for me), or they're not used to it and don't want to learn, or they have to devote 100% of their attention to it, and so on. I love watching anime subtitled, even if there's a dub option I won't take it, but it's also a trial because my attention span is crap and I can't do something else while I watch or I miss what's being said.

I mean, they might just not want to because they're a dick, but there's lots of reasons besides that.

There's a lot of reasons for not liking subtitles. I will watch things with subtitles if they come highly recommended (and I'll always choose subs over dubs), but it takes a bit of convincing for me, for two main reasons. One, it lessens my immersion in the story somewhat when I can't engage with it as one specific type of story-telling medium and instead have to simultaneously engage with it as separate mediums paired together. Two, being able to experience the nuances of the acting is really important to me, and I can't fully do that with subtitles.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-16 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
eh, judge away. Sometimes I'm doing multiple things while watching a show (ie: mending things, crafts, cooking, etc) so I'm not looking at the screen for a solid hour or whatever - which is something I can do with shows I can hear, not ones with sub titles :P

Also it just requires more focus - call it laziness or whatever, I already survived school and didn't make it through to adulthood just to give myself homework for fun.

Eh.
I love watching non-English shows because I love to hear the languages, the dubs are mostly horrific, and I can read quickly enough for it not to be an issue.

I use captioning/subtitles with English media, too, sometimes, because of the stupid 'everybody is mumbling' trend and/or the background noises are too loud, or my environment is too loud.

But having subtitles on DOES mean i have to sit and watch the screen 100% of the time, which means sometimes I just hold off, because I have other stuff to do and just want something playing that i can listen to and look up at when i'm not being distracted (like by my cats or my daughter ICQ'ing me a long conversation).
Maybe don't judge so harshly.

I say this as someone who prefers subtitles for non-English shows: Subtitles can be a pain in the ass. Even if you are good at reading you can miss interesting, or even important visual things while trying to keep up with the dialog. I can completely understand someone not wanting to deal with that.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-16 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I though gen z and millenials were all about the subtitles to the point that they can't watch things without them anymore?

As for the secret, I think your friend is stupid to reject your recs just because they're not in English.

But I'm also not going to pretend that you have to concentrate differently on subtitles. Which just means that if you're looking for a dumb show you can scroll on your phone through/ not concentrate too hard on, a show not originally in a language you know will probably not be it.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-16 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
I don't feel the same way as you do about subtitles, but as a fellow judgey person, I get it. Though I think it's worth remembering that you're as flawed in her eyes as she is in yours, and if that's not true it's probably because she's more generous-minded than you are.

What I tell myself routinely is: Don't forbid yourself from being judgey; just remember it's rarely a boon.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-16 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
...okay, I absolutely love that nearly everything comes with subtitles now. I watch shows in English with subtitles! I started doing it when learning another language which I can read much better than I can speak, so I had subtitles in that language as well as the spoken language and just never stopped even when going back to English language shows. But I absolutely don't judge someone else for choosing how to spend their leisure time. Do I think they're missing out? Yes, but that's also their choice.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-16 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Ngl I understand people not liking subtitles in their entertainment. But a lot of native speakers here not doing themselves any justice in this comment section.

IDK stuff like this kind of seems like misplaced frustration. I have friends who have their own struggles with reading subs and it's usually way more personal than for social construct reasons. And TBH I'm realizing now how irritating it can be to be on the receiving end of, "Watch this! Watch it! Watch it! I'm going to talk endlessly about this. I don't care why or why not you haven't watched it. Just watch it! Watch it."

Like, people got their reasons not to take up everything you recc. If it annoys you, it annoys you. But you don't need to insinuate it's because they're not curious about expanding their exposure to other cultures. And even if they don't, now you know not to talk to that friend about non-English media.

Not OP but
