Based on 5

What was your first exposure to fanfic? Slash?

Re: Based on 5

(Anonymous) 2023-07-28 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Fanfic: Pokemon, I was reading Ash/Misty fanfic but I was so young I thought it was the writers of the anime posting online continuations somehow? Until I got older and realised what I had actually been reading. I wasn't annoyed it was more a 'oooh, that's what it was' and felt a little silly because in retrospect it's very obvious that it was fan-made, but I was 8. xD

My first slash ship was Dean/Castiel, but I left the fandom looooong before the last season so I had no emotional investment by that point so I didn't feel anything about how that all ended up. lol.

Re: Based on 5

(Anonymous) 2023-07-28 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
First slash exposure was... maybe Mulder/Krycek, which I did NOT ship, but... it did let me know what to look for for the gay content I craved, just in other fandoms/with other characters.

Fanfic: Doctor Who zines when I was in high school.

Slash: Online Blakes 7 fandom in the late '90s. I've never looked back.

One and the same. Am fandom old, got access to the internet around 12/13 (AOL lol), went looking for people to talk with about The Vampire Chronicles novels. Found Lestat/Louis and Armand/Daniel slash. Been in fandom ever since.

First fanfic was DBZ. First slash was LOTR I believe. But it was like, "This is crazy (Legolas fucking a tree)". First I read was CSI.

For both, it was finding a big Xena fansite with fanfic and a forum, and wondering why all these people thought Xena and Gabrielle were in love.

Mulder/Kryckek, I guess? I knew about Kirk/Spock.

To reframe that, I knew about both of these ships, but I did not understand the appeal of slash until I watched a very slashy show in like, 2007, and then I was like OMG I need to write this and read it!

Essentially a het shipper before that.

Trying to find Placebo fanfic in early 2001. First one I read was about Brian complaining to his bandmates that his butt was too big :( lol

Re: Based on 5

Oddly enough, it was het, when I was 13, many, many years ago. But not long after that I discovered slash and have been all about it ever since (odd since I basically never read het anymore since discovering slash).

X-Files for both. I stumbled upon an X-Files archive, just looking for more about the show, and started reading Mulder/Scully fics. Then Ratboy came along, and I fell headlong into slash fic. Though I did read a fair amount of gen fic, too. My fic reading is still going strong, but I don't think I've read an X-files fic in at least 15 years, maybe 20 (I stopped watching the show in Season 8 and my fic reading tapered off after that). SeaQuest was probably my next fandom, mostly read gen for that, but then came Due South (with RayK).

For fanfic it was probably sailor moon, and then maybe FFVII slash? Very long ago indeed...

Re: Based on 5

(Anonymous) 2023-07-29 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I recall avoiding slash fics for the longest time because I thought they were horror fics ('slash' like 'slasher movie,' of course) and I didn't get why they were so popular. I think the first one I ever read was a Zelgadis/Xellos Slayers fic.

The novelization of Star Trek The Motion Picture. Where the writer has Kirk give a huge in character footnote about how he and Spock were not lovers despite what people said (but only because he, Kirk, wanted to get laid more than once every seven years). Innocent young thing that I was, I had never even considered it at the time, but afterwards...

Fanfic and slash, I made a secret once about how my first fanfic was a Naruto/Itachi on Fanfic.net. Now looking back, I have no idea how I stumbled upon fanfic.net, I'm not from an English-speaking country and had to use a translator to read fics from there. I assume I saw the word fanfic in Deviantart and searched for it online.

Now thinking about it, I also don't remember how I first stumbled by AO3 either, but I probably just searched for a ship and ended there.

Re: Based on 5

Lmao my first exposure to fanfic was 'Titanic!' Tbh, I still have fond memories of a fic called 'The Odyssey,' where Jack lived. But after Rose got pregnant with his child, they separated, and she wound back up with her mother and Cal. Ruth exclaimed, "he raped you!," and Rose said, "we both wanted it, mother." Later, Cal was physically abusive toward Ruth, after which she sat on a staircase and thought, "my goodness, what have I done, saddling my daughter with such a person?" Rose and Jack eventually got back together, but he had to track her down, since she'd been carted off to Philadelphia.

The reason I recall it so fondly is that it was the first time I'd recognized the potential of fanfiction, and decided it was something I wanted to try my hand at.

Shortly after I learned the fanfiction was a thing, I learned that slash was a thing, as well; I heard about Kirk/Spock, and I also heard about Mulder/Krycek, but I wasn't interested in either, so I didn't bother reading any fic. I can't actually recall the first time I read slash (generally speaking, I need there to be at least one woman in anything I read). I can say that I think the first time I read femslash was during the time of 'Dark Angel.' I read and wrote Max/Original Cindy.

Fanfic: probably Inuyasha. I found a site with fanfictions in my native language and almost all of those were of Inuyasha. But I don't remebember if I was searching something related to Inuyasha or something else.

Slash: Ranma. Specifically Ryoga/Ranma.

Being on the X-men Evolution fan forum site Extreme Evolution. I'd go to the fan works part and people would post things like links to their fan art and fanfiction. Now that I'm looking back, it must have just been after FFNet got rid of the NC-17 Rating because although there were links to the ffnet site - there were a lot more for another site called Adultfanfiction where 12 year old me would make up a year to say I was over 18 with and sign in to read the fics.

Anyways, my first fic was a slash Kurt/Lance dark fic that I was obsessed with reading at the time. My first OTP was Kurt/Todd with a fic called 'Because I got High' on FFnet, where they both got high and fucked in a park lol.

Re: Based on 5

My first exposure to fanfic was Sailor Moon, but before that I was creating stories in my mind because I was an insomniac kid and my parents made me go to bed early, which made me discover the wonderful world of my imagination. "My" fanfic involved 90s game characters and when I found out the word "fanfic" I started trying to write my own stories. Which were dumb as fuck I was 10 and weird.

Those were gen. don't remember what my first slash fic was, probably Goku/Vegeta or something.

Re: Based on 5

I don't even recall, it was so long ago!

Re: Based on 5

(Anonymous) 2023-07-29 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
First exposure to fanfic was BtVS fanfic back in the very early 00's. I was fourteen and obsessed with Buffy, and looking online for stuff about the show.

For a long time I was pretty big on canon-adherence, and I also tended to prefer female characters, so slash wasn't really my scene back then.

I can say for sure that the first non-het ship I ever read was actually femslash--Buffy/Faith to be specific.

I think the first M/M ship I very lightly dabbled in was Young/Rush from Stargate Universe, and my first full-on M/M OTP was Johnlock.

Weekend Plans?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2023-07-28 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
What is everyone doing?

I thankfully have no plans. :3 So I will probably just be crocheting and gaming. Might try to replant green beans now that our current ones are dead. For once, I am asking another question as well as plans. Does anyone here game? If yes, what games and platforms?

Alternatives to AO3?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-29 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Prefacing this to state that I DO love AO3 and am genuinely happy to read and post fics on there - but between the downtime and reading the things that are going on behind the scenes of the sites maintenance; ngl I get nervous. So I've been looking into alternatives to at least upload my fics onto another site.

Still have yet to look into Wattpad again since the last time I did that I got a bit overwhelmed. Was looking into Quotev and was tempted to post in for one of my smaller fandoms - but heard rumors from people who had used the site that sometimes fics get deleted for what would seem to be no reason other than the few claiming it was to 'free up space' on the site.
I would like to see if my old ffnet accounts are still standing and if I can log into them at all - otherwise idk about creating a new account. It feels like its days are numbered and would possibly just delete the site out of the blue with no warning one day.

Actually considering going to look for a fanfiction tag-template and just start uploading my fics onto here Livejournal style. I know there's no reason why not other than my fandom doesn't really exist here - but then at least my works would be uploaded elsewhere (not going to get into it, but right now I don't have a writing program so I've been literally writing on the AO3 site for the past year :'D so I haven't been able to save it all onto a usb or anything either).
