So edgy.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-21 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
...Libby is much easier than pirating. It takes longer, but it's sooo much easier.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-21 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Skill issue. I don't have access to Libby because I'm not in America (I guess it's American but honestly idk), but pirating books is very easy these days. I can do it without an account in literally 3 clicks + typing the book's name. You just need to know the right places...

You're right

(Anonymous) 2025-08-21 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
But the fact is OP knows how to pirate and is just too lazy to learn an easier way. For a certain type of person, a hard way that you already know is always going to be easier than making an effort to learn a new easier way.

DA
Not to me. You need North American library card.

Also it's my local problem but libby is blocked for me (welcome to being Russian)

To some people, taking longer is exactly what's harder about it.

I'm sorry you don't have a decent public library.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-21 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
we're in the minority and we'll get shit on all over this thread for it, but i pirate a lot of my books too. and yes i can buy books from independent shops or utilize a library, and sometimes i do those things, but there's a major convenience to piracy

(Anonymous) 2025-08-21 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I for one don't pirate much books because I prefer physical copies, but whatever man. I'm all up for piracy and regularly pirate other kinds of media. Seal on, mates.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-21 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I prefer reading physical books, so I just order them form my library if they are available/published in my country. Otherwise... I usually don't bother pirating them unless it's a incredibly promising plot, which is very rare.
More power to you, nonny. I hope you find books that you like enough to spend a little money on and buy your own copy. If not, whatever lol

(Anonymous) 2025-08-21 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Gotta admit, I judge people like you hardcore. Books are the one thing I won't pirate. I just feel like most authors only see such a small percentage of profits, I'd like to actually support the authors/books I like.

But it is rather hypocritical of me because I'll definitely pirate mainstream tv shows and movies. I try and not do so for indie stuff though.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-21 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Studies have shown that pirating mainstream tv shows and movies don't actually cut into any profits. Pirating books though, especially not mega-authors, absolutely does.

"No offense but I don't know any of you" is a wild thing to me. Like I ask for book recs from all sorts of places and yeah, you never know if it'll be a match but people aren't trying to make the perfect match when recing books. They're just saying "hey, this might interest you, you should check it out!" Also, pirating books because you don't know if you'll enjoy them is a lame ass excuse. There is never a guarantee you'll like something when you buy it, that's just the way it works.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-22 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
The overwhelming majority of all media, including books, is garbage nowadays. That's why I pirate books and buy them only if I liked them and managed to finish them.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-22 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
that's a garbage excuse. I feel like people who pirate always have excuses when really it just comes down to convenience or laziness. And I say that as someone who occasionally sails the seas.

On Amazon for digital books you can often get a sample of the first pages to read. If you combine that with checking out Goodreads reviews before buying anything, you can often make sure you'll enjoy what you're buying before you buy it. This is what I do and it works for me.

I don't pirate books, but i get it. New books are expensive, and if they suck, that's money lost. I use my local library as much as possible, and used book sites when something is impossible to borrow.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-22 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Pirating books makes you a shitty person.

100% not judging you for pirating.

But Libby is just as easy as pirating. This is just lazy, come on. It's also handier in my experience.

So the summaries and Goodreads reviews would read totally different to you if those same books were recced by someone you know? That makes so much so much sense and pirating is the obvious solution here. /s

Just wanted to comment and say that Libby is not always an alternative to piracy for people for a number of reasons.

1) Libby relies on you having a library card. Not everyone even has access to a library. Not all libraries have partnered with Libby.

2) the library chooses what books are available on Libby and the library has to pay a fee for every copy they "rent" from publishers. Some big libraries with big budgets may choose a fuck ton of books for people to borrow. Some small libraries may only have a small budget and therefore only rent a small number of books. Book availability on Libby is different for everyone.

For example when I look in the Libby App there are only 275 books available for my library, and most of them are classics or children's books. Very few new releases.

3) When books are available on Libby, they are also dependant on what kind of rental or subscription plan the library has. Libraries can pay for a single copy of a book that can only be borrowed by one person at a time like a physical book, or they can pay more money for unlimited loans. They also have a limited amount of time they can rent the books for, depending on their rental plan for the book. So books go away after a set period.

Libby is a great service, and I am really glad it exists for those that can access it. But its not always the easy alternative to piracy that people think it is.

As an indie author, you're right; this should be a secret. You're terrible, OP.

Here's a real thing: Authors will often give you FREE copies (in exchange for a review) if you just ASK them.

But since you're not, I hope you get the ebook version of a papercut soaked in vinegar.
