Oh my god, did I get drunk and make this secret? Seriously, everyone else looks at me funny when I wax about how I searched high and low for an mp3 of this song so that I could have it on my Zune and listen to it when I'm angry. I can be so exceptionally furious with everything about humanity, but if I start singing that song, it helps me realize that the world is a brilliant place, and whatever I was mad about doesn't seem like that big of a deal anymore, in the scheme of things.

I'm pretty much out of the Whedon fandom (which is odd because it seems like it'd be right up my alley) but I really haven't been involved since like season 2 of Buffy. So I'm being neutral when I ask... how is character death a "trick"? Do you mean it in the sense that it's built up as a surprise? I'm asking because from where I'm sitting, looking at this secret knowing nothing, that a high body count in the situations he portrays seems natural. Just curious.

IMO, the one trick wouldn't be character death but his habit of delivering some kind of crushing blow at a character's or a couple's highest moments. People reunite, it looks like they are about to start playing happy families, and suddenly devastation ensues.

It's very effective at generating an emotional response from fans, to say the least.
