It was so incredibly satisfying to watch Victoria slagging off the NYTimes Connections game. I needed the show to address it directly at some point and this was perfect - not too harsh, but with a bit of snark about its lower standards.

I never heard the term "maladaptive dreaming" until I was an adult. It's something I've done for as long as I can remember. I wouldn't say I had an excessively abusive childhood, but I wasn't a happy child and I've always found solace in daydreaming and making up stories in my head: rich fantasies about fictional characters I loved, and fictional worlds. I couldn't wait to go to bed at night so I could fall asleep to these stories. Every spare minute I had, I'd immediately jump into my dream worlds and dream stories. If I felt stressed or sad, I had an escape.

Then a few months ago, I just couldn't do it anymore.

I want to! I try to... but I can't make the dream stories happen the way I used to. They've lost their magic, the details that used to comfort me are blurry and lack substance.

I feel like I've been locked out of a fantasy world that has always been my sanctuary.

I just want to go back. But I don't know how.

From my experience with imagination fatigue, one of two things has happened:

1) There is Unignorable Stress somewhere in your life and you can't escape into fantasy because your brain is busy working on the problem of the Stress. Although daydreaming / fantasising / imagining is considered stress relieving, it only really works when the stress you're experiencing is something that's reasonably familiar to you. Unignorable Stress can also mean a lack of socialisation, touch, or general human contact so if you've been isolating yourself, you really do need to start trying to get back out there.

1) Your brain has exhausted the dopamine it can squeeze out of your fantasies and you need fresh material. There's a reason authors are prolific readers; inspiration doesn't come from others and the novelty and ingenuity of others powers your own. Ideally, you'd also include new experiences as well as new media; going to a new cafe, trying a different route to a familiar place, trying out something like a massage or rollercoaster that really connects you to your body. By existing and enjoying what you can of reality, you'll give your imagination the fuel it needs to work again.

I'm sorry, but the current Rock Cocks storyline is stupid as hell. Suria and Steg want to fuck on stage while performing a rock concert without ever even rehearsing it once or working out the logistics beforehand because it's their ~~dream~~ and they're going on about how this is the only chance they'll ever get to live it out (they say while in a sex club owned by a big fan of theirs who clearly intends for them to be a regular act) and acting like their manager is just being a big ol' meanie mean-pants for telling them not to.

That was all stupid enough on its own, but then Elizabeth comes in and somehow makes it even dumber with her big, passionate speech about why Suria and Steg should be allowed to fuck while performing a rock concert and how it could sexually liberate the whole world and how the manager is a coward if he doesn't let them fuck on stage while singing and playing the guitar and drums at the same time. Honestly, it's starting to give shades of Kit and Kay Boodle and I'm just kind of over it.

Deliver Me From Nowhere was a mistake from start to finish. If they were going to focus on one era or album, it should have been Born to Run.

Casting Jeremy Allen White was also a huge mistake; 2025 audiences don’t support child abusers.

I just saw a post that says Coco is pro-abuse and anyone who doesn't agree is normalizing abuse.

The worst part is I can see it. I didn't agree with anything they said, but other people replied mentioning things like the chancla joke that I could interpret as OK with abuse.

Secrets you don't want to make...

... but you wouldn't mind if someone else made them for you! As always, including the fandom and full character names is a big help, and while I'm definitely not the world's greatest expert at secret design, I'll try my best. Please note that long comment secrets can be difficult to make with a good end result. Most of the time, I'll give it a shot but might not be able to make secrets where the text is so lengthy that I can't fit it into the limited space.

I'm trying something new with the comment secret thread and extending the deadline to comment until Monday's post goes up. I'll monitor this thread until then, and hope the extra day will be more helpful for everyone.

Nothing makes me more sure that any indie project will fail than when they come to broad genre forums and fan discords wanting to "communally source ideas" because they don't have any strong plans or visions of their own.

This goes for novels, games, webcomics, fanworks, fan events, etc etc.

If you have to ask "what should I do at all?" and not "what do you think of this idea I already have?" it's inevitably going to be bad.
