(Anonymous) 2026-01-25 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)Petty vent about family
(Anonymous) 2026-01-25 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)So you know how you can do your phone settings so that when it's set to overnight mode, most notifications are muted, but you can pick certain people/apps that will still come through?
I was with my family once and we were talking about it, and I told them that I have my parents and both siblings set to come through, along with my grandmother, uncle, and brother-in-law.
And they were just... weird about it. Dismissive about my grandmother/uncle "They couldn't find your number if they needed it and why would they call you?" and they just acted WEIRD when I said my brother-in-law is on my allowed list too.
He's not on there so I can have a secret chat with him at 2 am when we can't sleep... he's on there so that if something happens to my sister or her phone, he can get ahold of me.
They have been married for over ten years now. I have known this man since I was a single digit age. There has never been anything weird between us? I'm not that kind of person???? And they all know this. But they acted like I had said/was doing something weird.
It was one of those moments that stuck with me and just still pisses me off all over again when I think about it. There was a time when my sister's phone was acting up and outgoing calls were not being sent. What if she had had an emergency, and tried to call off her husband's phone, but everyone had their settings so that his calls wouldn't come through?
And as for my grandmother and uncle. Yeah, sure, I know it's unlikely they'd ever need or want to call me or be able to find my phone number, but why the fuck NOT put them on there?? It doesn't hurt anything. It's not like it causes a problem. If they never ever call me, then that's fine, nothing is lost or damaged. But again, what if something crazy happened, and they had an emergency? They were just kind of contemptuously dismissive of that statement, like "Lol you think these people are going to call YOU?"

(Anonymous) 2026-01-25 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)Also, wear masks if you are loaded with germs. Yes, even kids. The amount of people, visibly ill, and dragging kids who are hacking and coughing and sneezing around, in the supermarket is frankly disgusting. Either stay home, or mask up, we do not need to suffer this every year.

Fanfic research Q

Re: Fanfic research Q
(Anonymous) 2026-01-25 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)I have a MC who moved to America as an adult, and by time of canon is a newly minted citizen.
I want them to buy a gun for this fic. How do they do that? Do they need to go and get certified at a firing range first, or do they just walk into a gun shop and point and say "that one"? If they go to a firing range for lessons, do they need to buy the gun first or does firing ranges have their own that they teach customers on? What sort of handgun are they likely to be recommended for target shooting, and also for a hunting rifle/shotgun?
Canon location is the D.C. suburbs in Virginia, and time period is 2010-ish, if that changes things?

(Anonymous) 2026-01-25 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)Doesn't get out into the fields a lot, do they?
Bigfoot classic is just North-North Cal, Oregon, and Washington state, maybe into the Idaho Panhandle.
The Dogman is Michigan and occasionally Northern Wisconsin.
Appalachia is weird, but they got Mothman in W. Virginia, and "Mountain Growlers" all along it.
The lower Appalachian mountains, into northern Florida and along into Louisiana have the Skunk Ape.
Seems an odd distribution. I'm just saying. Also, I'm just saying I'm drunk.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-26 12:13 am (UTC)(link)Mothman has been spotted in Chicago as recently as 2017.
The most credible Dogman encounter (to me) happened to someone who was running alongside a cornfield when he was younger. He's now a federal judge.
Also animals tend to go to where the food and water is plentiful. If Sasquatches exist they'd be in the forests for the berries, fish in the water and deer.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-26 12:49 am (UTC)(link)anyway long/short answer is, 1st hoax perpetuated in a wooded area, giving rise to suggestions that that's the habitat since dense woodlands are harder to just see through, especially at night, and dense woodlands are also where a lot of normal NA animals that most humans don't actually encounter regularly live. See: raccoons, possums, cougars, coyotes, wolves, even certain wild fowl like turkeys, grouse, nightjars, and several species of owls, plus loons in lakeland wooded areas. They make weird noises while hunting at night (or avoiding being hunted) and are the normal things usually stirring at times when humans without any wildland experience are out looking around, so of course Dumbass Barry who lives in the city doesn't know that the thing making noise outside his tent at 10pm is just a fucking possum rooting around, not Bigfoot. I just fucking want people in general to first learn what wildlife exists in any given area before jumping to conclusions, so that if you go out into the wilderness, your actual question to yourself is, "is it a raccoon or a wolf?" because that's entirely plausible AND a good question to ask, not "is it a bird or Bigfoot?"

(Anonymous) 2026-01-25 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)Re: "It's a privilege to even be able to escape"
Saying that interacting with media as a way to decompress and get out of your head and calm your anxiety is not privilege - if you have a phone and free wi-fi at the library, you can 'escape' in that way, and tons of people do, all the time.
So maybe it's just a lot of confusion and mixed messages. OR maybe some people are jerks.
I hope you can get to a place that feels safer and calmer and easier for you, OP.
*hugs*
Re: "It's a privilege to even be able to escape"
(Anonymous) 2026-01-25 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)1. Some people can't "sign off" and escape they are living it 24/7 and can't escape. Soke people just don't have the means for any type of escape. I don't think it's saying that you shouldn't enjoy your fun escapism, just pointing out its a privipege to be able to do so.
2. People are taking escape literally, aka moving out of the country. Only privileged people can do that.
