If this secret actually is true: if it'll lead to you getting so upset (to the point where you'd actually consider doing that completely crazy B!S) don't Google yourself, don't read/participate in these comms. They're not actually for you anyway, they're for your fans.

[identity profile] pts.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't make up my mind if this is a troll secret or not.

I do sort of want to believe a published author would be narcissistic enough to write fic of their own work just to troll the fandom, admittedly.

On the other hand, actually talking shit about specific communities within your fandom in a piece of canon material would be a really nasty thing to do, and you shouldn't do it.

lol right

(Anonymous) 2010-11-05 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
And this is how it actually went:

This one fangirl got butthurt from the more popular community so she went to the smaller community that's populated by her and her friends, and she likes the smaller community better, so she made this secret, the end.

This secret seems in no way fake. In no way.

[identity profile] homestar.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Not that I believe this secret, but condemning a group of fans never ends well for anyone. It just makes creators sound like elitist pricks (which they can be, but be a fucking grownup and realize on a professional level what would be good for you to do publicly)

but like I said, none of this secret is true anyway

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
There is one author that came to mind immediately when I read this secret . . . and if it was that author, then I'd probably believe it.

But as for right now, I'm going to call 'bullshit.' =/ Just . . . I just feel like that's the way to go on this one.

Are you seriously going to address fanfiction comms as your professional self? If you were a real professional writer you would've known why agents/editors strictly forbid those people to get withing an inch of any sort of fanwork.

Sorry, this tiny detail makes it hard for me to believe the entire secret. Cool fantasy though. I too sometimes dream about having a fandom and writing fanfiction for my own series, even getting bad feedback and all that. It's one of my favorite fantasies as an aspiring writer.

Well personally I think it IS possible for writers to write their own characters OOC, it's just much less likely- but hey if it wasn't psycologically possible for the character in the situation and what we know then yeah...

I mean, I write original stuff, but say if I forgot some small detail about their personality (I don't know, something kind of silly like they hate a certain food) and then contradicted it (they're eating with gusto despite there being lots of options/not starving or whatever) with no due explanation later without realising it, could be considered an OOC blip or a plot hole, whatever. Of course, other more complicated issues can be used as examples but off the top of my head- I did have a traitor character at one stage in some original work... but as I got a feel for him and other characters, I realised that would be probably the last thing he would do, and shoehorning him into that role would be stupid just to have that dilemma, when there is a very clear female character who would be more likely to do so anyway. And I made these characters myself. Still if I hadn't realised this and tried to force him into that anyway consequences be damned? It would have been OOC.

But often people cry OOC in too many situations anyway, usually because it's in relation to shipping or whatever, and this bigger comm hardly sounds all that deep at all from your secret anyway to warrent their opinions as being all that valid. lol.

Still, that big comm sounds like a mess anyway.

But no, I don't think it would be a good idea to mention the larger more immature comm at all- not only would you look immature yourself but heck, mentioning you dip into fanfic at ALL could be a lawsuit waiting to happen.

[identity profile] vickyblueeyez.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
First of all, praise you anon. I want to write and publish but I'm afraid my stuff sounds like stuff already out there. :( That and I have no idea where to go TO get published. My husband hates proof reading my shit and I don't trust anyone else with my stories. (help) If I did get published, I would look and see if my book had a fandom. I'd be so disappointed if it didn't. So kudos to you that you have followers. Be happy at that. I highly doubt the paranormal romance stuff I want to write would get a fandom. If I made it for the teens ie make my chars high schoolers, where the money is, yea I'd have a fandom but I don't want that.

I aspire to do this with my books someday.

I can understand where you're coming from though. Fans know nothing.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-06 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
If it is true, fuck em. Most fans get an idea in their head about how a character should be. Some of them realize it's silly and don't defend themselves but others are kinda insane.

It's kinda part of why I'm worried if I get popular people will start insanely slashing my characters in ways that make no sense.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-06 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
So...what is your reaction when someone reacts negatively to your published work? Bitch and moan too?

God, you should have known this when going into the business: you don't get to hand-pick your fans. Ever. I don't know how common it is between authors to believe this, but it just doesn't fly; once something is out there, it's at the mercy of whoever decides it appeals to them for whatever reason. You don't have to like every fan, but the fact that you went into both comms looking for ass-pats says something about your ego. At this point you're actually acting like the authors' who're more vocal against fanfic- "I'm just lending you my toys! Don't play wrongly with them or I'll get very angry!" Hey, guess what: you're not lending shit, you're selling a product. People can't plagiarize it, but every kind of person can buy it and they are going to play with it the way they see fit.

I hope I never come across your books, much less like them; why waste my time on someone who's so eager to alienate their own fans? You're not being (just) ungrateful, you're being an idiot.

/on the tiny, tiny, tiny chance this is real.
