Probably, yeah. I used to despise the tea parties I was forced to attend when I was a child. Those were some of the most pretentious, awful social meetings I've ever had the displeasure of knowing. I hate to think how much worse they used to be about a hundred years ago or so.

I don't watch Sherlock, but from what I'm reading, isn't it supposed to be based in the modern day? And if it's based in the modern day and the only Chinese characters represented are criminals and gangsters with accents then yeah, I do sort of see a problem and I can understand why people are calling racism.

Looks like a cool show otherwise, though.

How can he tie you up when he doesn't have hands?

[identity profile] damnated.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe because the people who agree with each other will flock together (since you can add friends, make communities for only the people you want, etc), which happens everywhere, but LJ does seem to have more tools to have that possible

dat bear.

It's Olivia Wilde.

How does being a fan of a show or a webcomic that happens to star mainly children/teenagers make one a pedophile? Isn't that like saying that everyone who's a fan of NASCAR wants to fuck cars?

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that might be a pit pessimistic of you. I have friends in real life that I only take about school with, ones that I only talk about media with, ones that I only talk about the latest geekery with. It just means you're casual friends and not best friends, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Also, are you telling me you've never said something like "Would have written fic, but slipped on some ice and broke my wrist" or similar? Because if you have, that's real life, and if you haven't, I admire the hell out of your separation techniques.

Yeah, when BC is in his Holmes costume, they could be brothers! But otherwise, perhaps not? He looks so different out of costume.

I loved this version of Holmes, and I love the movie Atonement, and when my sister pointed out that "he who plays Holmes is that creep from Atonement!", well that was a big CAN'T UNSEE moment for me... I had not even realized that they were played by the same person!

This just gave me plot bunnies. Thanks.

[identity profile] theditz.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
FUCKING TUMBLR, HOW DO THEY WORK?

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
This this.

OP here

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! No, that wasn't what I meant at all. Sorry about that. It's an AU with only the loosest of ties to the original canon, and making the character South African, or indeed any other nationality without exploring what that does to the character and relationships that they have feels wrong to me. I'd feel the same with any nation-shift of a character.

Off-topic: icon love!

I've never made an account, and probably never will. I could tell from far off that it was a pretty lonely, impersonal thing, and I don't need a 'social' service like that, because there's really no point. :|a Every now and then I go to the main website and search the tags for some fan art of my favorite characters, but that doesn't require me to have an account, so... I legit do not understand the point of having one, lol.

Re: +100000

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone doesn't want pedos like you all taking their art and fucking it up? He must be egotistical then! Seriously, fuck you all

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
See, this is why I don't understand getting into Hetalia at all. Every nation has historical and current events that are extremely sensitive. I've only seen bits and pieces of the fandom, but Hetalia seems to need its fans to take history extremely lightly. And if you're taking history lightly, why would you take current events lightly?

I just -- I don't think it's right, and fandom should include respecting people and not upsetting them, but I don't think it should shock anyone this is happening. The fandom is based off of making history a comedy.

At first it's a very daunting site, it's so hard to grasp, and I too left it to rot for a while before coming back to try and tackle it.

Once you get a few people you know on there it gets interesting. I must point out that tumblr and LJ are not mutually exclusive, it's a different web 2.0 kinda blogsite as derpy and pretentious as that sounds.

[identity profile] p-drunkwriting.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That's great! and I'm pretty sure there's nothing wrong with you, anon.

[identity profile] pimmy.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, secrets like this make me glad I never touched the HP fandom with a ten foot pole, I just read the books.

I thought Ron and Hermoine were as obvious as Benedick and Beatrice since book one. I keep feeling surprised that so many people completely didn't see it, lol. It seems like such a "duh" thing to me, idk.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I am so sick of reading it everywhere. I've seen 19 year-olds being called paedophiles for being friendly with 16 year-olds! WTF! I guess it's supposed to be a joke, but honestly, I can't find anything funny about this.

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? That's your number one worry? Then, my dear, you're in for a boatload of reality check, unless you already have an agent and a publisher lined up.

Here are the steps for your novel to get to what you fear most (if you're a first time writer - which you sound like - and don't have an aunt who's a well known agent/publisher):

Manuscript finished -> the gist sent as a query letter to agents -> query read by the agent (or the agent's secretary if the agent is a notable one) -> agent contacting you asking for the first 1/2/5 chapters -> agent contacting you again asking for the whole manuscript -> you and agent meeting and signing a contract -> agent shopping around for publisher -> publisher accepting manuscript, meeting with you and agent, signing contract -> book being published -> publisher able to negotiate shelf space for book at major book stores -> decent # of books being purchased and read by interested public -> people recommending the book through word of mouth and/or book getting popular through marketing -> fandom formation -> fandom getting big enough to merit bad fiction and cheesy porn.

Trust me, if you get to the point where people start to take your story apart you'd actually have so much success under your belt that you probably wouldn't care.

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
... this secret is so awkwardly disjointed that after reading it I just felt kind of empty inside.

It's also good for following comics and artists who have migrated from deviantart.

Hermione didn't choose Rupert Grint, she chose Ron.
