Seems a bit overkill to me to make it a hard and fast rule like that, but to each her own.

[identity profile] captain-loki.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd have to agree with this. I might give it a chance, if it's maybe a single question, but if the whole summary is just a series of questions I have to think that the person isn't a particularly good writer.

Although, I am also incredibly high standards when it comes to what I read...it's unfortunate actually

[identity profile] yucari.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Were you never taught about rhetorical questions in elementary school, child?

I'm sure the author of the best fic in the entire fandom is crushed to not have your silly review among the other thousand. You show 'em.

[identity profile] frozenish.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
You know I had never really thought about this before, but now that you mention it, a summary that is full of questions usually *is* indicative of a bad fic.

In-ter-est-ing.

[identity profile] zippytheavenger.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Whenever you see a rhetorical question in a fic summary, it's a given that the answer will be 'yes'. Will X heal Y's broken heart? Yes. Will X finally see the light and men his/her evil ways? Most likely. Will X and Y put aside their differences and save the world? Definately. Will X and Y overcome their obstacles and declare their love at last? Wasn't wondering that before, but now that you mention it, YES.

I agree. I think I did it when I was younger, sorry. When I see the questions, I can't help but wonder if the writer doesn't even know themselves what's going to happen. >_>;

Baaack in mah day...

[identity profile] cyprith.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I had a professor that would fail you if you started your paper with a question. Also, asking questions of the reader is a big No-No when querying professional fiction. :/

So... tl;dr-- I see questions before fiction as unprofessional.

Not all question summaries make me not want to read...but usually it is the case OP.

My most abhorred question usually is 'can their love make it through or will they be separated by x or y?'

I usually feel like answering: 'no, I'm just here to read about how they pass through 38 chapters of UST and romantic mishaps only for him to elope with her best friend.'

*facepalm*

LOL. While I don't stick to it as a rule, I do think it's a possible warning sign. If it's the only sign and the premise is good or it's a rare pairing, I'll probably still read it though.

Love the examples you listed btw.

[identity profile] cure-light.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I'm just tired of seeing the same sort of questions on so many fics. If your summary sounds just like the other ten on the page, why would I want to read yours? At least make it interesting.

"Will Chell and GLaDOS be able to get along or will their relationship turn out to be a fatal error? Tune in next week to find out! Same Bat-Time! Same Bat-Channel!"

Okay, that was terrible, but I'd probably be intrigued (and/or confused) enough to want to take a peek.

I think question summaries are adorable as hell. But the longer I'm in fandom the more I realize I'm starting to appreciate as it like, performance art or something.

The other day I was reading a middle school level fic that suddenly jumped to size 16 font for a random paragraph. Later, another paragraph was randomly purple. I was so delighted I put it in my favorites.

I don't have a rule about it or anything, but I usually skip over these because they pretty much give away the entire plot before you even start reading.

"Will Rarity ever find her true love?" Gee, I wonder :|

My cheeks are aching from laughing so hard after reading th first 'question'. LOL.

But, seriously, didn't The Prophecy make it clear the it required a boy born in the end of July, and not just a baby born in the end of July?

[identity profile] xekstrin.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I've noticed this too, anon. The only thing worse is having a random line of dialogue as your summary.

[identity profile] nadinthedreamer.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
aside from laughing it seems to me that an author who does that just wants to know maybe a fic about the same kinda thing was already written and is already popular, you know... So they won't waste the time and will write a more original idea...

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I dislike those summaries as well.

If I wasn't too lazy to complete an actual fic, I would so write a fic with a summary like "Will Charles and John find love? Will Elena accept their relationship? Will they be able to fulfill the prophecy and save the world?" and then have the story go straight into darkfic territory and have Charles and John's relationship fall apart, Elena going bonkers and trying to kill everyone because an eldritch abomination is possessing her, and said eldritch abomination causes the end of the world and the prophecy is ignored, so that the answers to the summary will be "No. No. And... nope." Because, yay apocalypse-fic.

[identity profile] lemon-m.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends on the question for me. If it's like, "Will Lily get over her hang-ups and love James after that?" then I'm like, yeah she will, and move on. (there's this trend in my fandom that goes like, "Will X get to the swamp in time to reunite with Y, or will Y die before that?" ... that situation is a scripted game event. Y will die, and people still put that in their summary)

But if the question isn't a yes/no one, it could be pulled off.

[identity profile] van.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it can a great indicator of a bad fic, but for me it really depends on the question. "Will Snape and Hermione be able to work through their differences and find true love?" is pretty lame for a summary, especially if the rest of the header information is "Snape/Hermione" and "NC-17/Adult." But if it's something like, ummm, idk, "In an AU where Harry is sorted into Slytherin, befriends Draco, and Snape takes him under his wing because he's Lily's son, can Voldemort still be defeated, or will the pressures of having a Slytherin-support group keep Harry's hands tied?" I think it can work. Because you can't figure out the resolution of the fic from that, and it actually is a summary of what's going to happen in the fic.

Yep, you're the first person ever to have thought about that!
Even for (especially for?) published fiction, or film summaries, rhetorical questions are usually a big warning sign for me, even though I don't necessarily hate them in the actual text.

[identity profile] procne92.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
HOLY SHIT ME TOO.

I have only broken this rule once, for an author whose many other amazing non-question-summaried works convinced me of her skill.

[identity profile] lemonflav-lopfe.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It bugs me as well. To teeth-gritting and jaw-clenching.

i skip the summaries that are like 'will she confess to him before it's too late forever and ever and ever their troo luv???' but i've read some really great fics with pretty great summaries, too, that have questions in them. here, let me prove it to you

twitterpated (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5290174/1/Twitterpated) - Every guy in Konoha is in love, and all Shikamaru needs is someone to help him clean out his shed! Is that too much to ask? Why do guys always drop their friends for girls? A fluffy, gooey, first-kiss one-shot. Shika/Tema, with Kiba/Ino & Naru/Saku.

friday night and quidditch delight (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4230888/1/Friday_Night_and_Quidditch_Delight) - Ron has decided that Friday night is to be spent in the worst possible way Hermione can imagine. But what on earth is Draco Malfoy doing at the Museum of Quidditch?

deflating (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1398976/1/Deflating) - She started going out with him in seventh year. Once James had deflated his head a bit." James is desperate, but can he really change everything he is for a girl? Well... he can try. ::It's done! And it's won awards!::

and bonus! question in the title! would you be my syrup? (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3362927/1/Would_You_Be_My_Syrup) - Fred Weasley was depressed. Angelina was what was depressing him. So the solution? Syrup on pancakes of course! FWAJ. read and review if you like the suggestion: go drown yourself in the lake or bathtub or something, the toilet is unsanitary.

yes, this was an excuse for me to show off how many ridiculously awesome fics i have read

That seems a little bit of a tough rule regarding summaries. Personally, the type of summary that makes me decide "Not gonna bother," is one that has typos (I know they happen, but it's a SUMMARY, give me a break), or one of those, "I suck at summaries, sorry!" posts. If you suck at summaries, than you probably just suck at writing, period.
