Oh goodness, flashbacks to anime club! God, the rape episode was the one that made me walk out and never go back. Plus, all the characters were so cliche!

I never did make it past the first few episodes of that. But maybe the reason it's "quintessential yuri" is because there's such a small pool of yuri to pull from anyway! That makes all yuri quintessential yuri in a way.

Look at yaoi, there's a bit more of it now, but people still love shit like Okane ga Nai and [Insert Shitty Over-Hyped Yaoi Title of Your Choice].

I didn't even get as far as the part with the rape because it was too cliche and boring, and I watched it at the height of my stupid-anime-fangirl phase. But yeah, even without that, the rape would disqualify it from being So Romantic in my book.

Oh God, SAME! I didn't even make it to the rape scene because the first few episodes were sooo boring. Besides,I HATE Moe characters like the blonde girl and find them unbelievably annoying. I was willing to stick with it to give it a chance but when I (fortunately) got spoiled about the rape, I was like....nope. No way.

Like this isn't mentioned every time the show comes up? And it's hardly quintessential - MariMite, Nanoha, and Mai-HiME have much larger yuri followings from what I've seen on /u/ over the years.

Still, regarding the secret, YES. Although this show actually bored me completely, so I might have been looking for more reasons to keep disliking it, so I accidentally fostered a hard-on of hate when I kept finding it more terrible than realized.

BUT.

Being the experience I've had with this series (1. fansubbing it for Static, 2. Scanlating the manga in Otenba) I do have to throw out there...

Did you finish watching the series? Or did you just stop with that scene?

Now, first and foremost, I'm not defending the rape scene, nor the act itself. RAPE IS INCREDIBLY WRONG NO MATTER HOW IT GOES DOWN.

That said, you do realize that the over-arcing "reason" for the rape is because of a deep-set never-ending love for her partner? As wrong as the scene/act itself was, that is (UNFORTUNATELY) why their relationship is considered one that is "quintessential" and "romantic".

Please note, my own personal opinions don't exactly align with this popular set of opinions, either. But I am saying I can see WHY people think this way. The above is merely an attempt to present their voice.

Ugh, I wanted to watch that show but then I heard about the rape and I never did.

I don't think it's wrong to like the show even though it has rape in it, but some of the fans creeped me out. I've heard more than one fan say, "Well, it wasn't technically rape, she HAD to, because it was destiny. So it's all good." Um that doesn't mean it isn't rape. Seriously fandom, what the heck?

A-FUCKING-MEN. That whole thing was horribly handled and completely destroyed what empathy I did have for Chikane up to that point. The way it was 'validated' and brushed off in the endgame with barely a word didn't help.

Every person I've ever heard talk about that show says its pretty much shit, so the Rape Is Love dynamic really doesn't help my outsider impressions of it.

If you're looking for what should be the go-to lesbian story in anime/manga, the stories from Yamaji Ebine are wonderful. Just thought I should put that recommendation out there.

Huh? Kannazuko no Miko is known to be a shit anime with god-tier songs by KOTOKO. Although what it should be shit for isn't what it should ie. the whole "I am going to rape you in order to destroy all ties between us to save you from your fate and have a happy ending." thing.

Although I really loved that promo pic of Himeko and Chikane. It kinda pissed me off it went the whole Rape as Drama and Rape is Love route because it completely fucked up the series and is extremely lazy ass writing.

I agree with this secret 100%

I was searching for a good yuri to watch and this one was recommended a lot. Right away I could tell it wasn't my cup of tea because of the mecha stuff, but I stuck with it. The rape scene was a deal breaker for me.

I was left disappointed with both Himeko and Chikane. I hated how Himeko never grew a spine and I hated how Chikane thought that raping her was the best thing she could do to change fate. It was just a cheap way to create drama that left a bad taste in my mouth and ruined the rest of their interactions.

It sucks because there is not much yuri out there as it is. I wish it got as much attention as yaoi so I'd have more to choose from.
