As someone who is religious I feel deeply disturbed and offended. Those are faith songs, devotional songs, and you're defiling their meaning to write amoral porn? Ugh.

Just the fact that you publicly posted this is disrespectful to all those who are religious. You couldn't have kept this to yourself? Seriously? Ugh. I seriously regret reading this.

Not cool, man.

I'm not religious, but religious music (specifically gospel/jazz) inspires the hell out of me all the time and in many different things. There's just so much heart in it, you know?

Also, most of it makes me cry.

Not sure if troll but I can see where that would come from. Many religious songs depict deep devotion and emotion. If you directed that at a (fallible, non-immortal, non-divine) person, that could be quite unhealthy in terms of a relationship.

Your partner, spouse, date, whatever should not be the same as your god, and if they are, that's unhealthy as fuck: I think religious and non-religious people alike can agree with that part.

Not music, but that reminds me of Donne's sonnet XIV, the one I like to think of as 'that religious God/self-insert BDSM poem'.

Something I've never considered, but I can see how it would help you write such things. A lot of the songs definitely give vibes like that when you pay attention to the lyrics. What's your favourite BDSM inspiration song?

It's a cool idea, but I can see why you keep it a secret. Not everyone keeps such music on a pedestal and as anon's below have shown, "you're defiling their music". (except you're not. Ignore them. If it works for you go for it.)

As someone who is quite into BDSM, I can understand part of that. In a fantasy magical perfect D/s lifestyle, the dominant would be very likely seen as something like a "god" by the submissive. Unrealistic but that's what fiction's for, isn't it?

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
that....actually makes a LOT of sense. And meh, it might offend some people if you tell them that, but the way you interpret something doesn't have an effect on the way they do, so you're not taking anything from them or anything. =)

[identity profile] vethica.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
You should listen to Skillet. I like Skillet and their songs can totally be interpreted like this. "Whispers in the Dark"? Hot dang son.

(unless one of the lyrics in your secret is from them and I didn't recognize it, in which case CARRY ON)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-27 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Spectacular.

I'm glad I saw this after graduating from high school, though. It would have made chapel so ridiculously uncomfortable (also, hilarious.)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-27 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Glad to not be the only one who gets that 'vibe' from the lyrics of most modern gospel music. I'm not inspired to write by it but it does make think about those things when I hear them.

But, yea totally understand why you would keep this a secret.

[identity profile] unicornherds.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
That's pretty awesome, OP. I love to hear about peoples random inspirations. It's just so wacky what inspires different people and how that inspiration can create such drastically different things. Like, religious music is inspirational to a bunch of people, but the outcome and the way it inspires is so varied and random. I love it!

[identity profile] al28894.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm... Dunno what to say to this. As an imaginative cloud-cukoolander, I say you have quite an interesting mind! As a religious person, well... it could have been worse. At least you didn't go and put an example.

[identity profile] otakugal15.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Hahahaha. I've done that on occasion.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-27 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Whatever works for you, anon. Everyone interprets music differently, like any sort of art. There is no wrong way of doing it, in my opinion.

Also, there is no way Kill Me, Heal Me by Skillet is not a BDSM song, with religious imagery.
ext_648166: (Default)

[identity profile] darkmanifest.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this makes total sense to me. A few times I'd be listening to what I thought was a love song with disturbingly obsessive lyrics, only to later discover it was a discreet worship song. And of course there was that episode of South Park that only had to change a couple of words in popular love songs to turn them into fake gospel.

I feel like this doesn't say good things about the attitude towards romantic love in popular culture...
ext_74116: (Default)

[identity profile] visp.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
In the immortal words of Homer Simpson: "it's funny 'cause it's true." But really, religious folk: haven't you noticed that a lot of your modern devotional lyrics are basically switch "baby" to "Jesus" and maybe add an extra bit of obsessive devotion? It's not OP's fault that a lot of your religion's lyric-writers have some iffy-ness to the phrasing.
