I never understood what "white people problems" are supposed to be. I understand POC have an extra layer of struggles they have to deal with because of racism and other related systematic oppression, but why can't there be a lot of overlap on non-race related things?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-13 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It's another way to call themselves special snowflakes.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-13 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Troll harder, racist anon.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
+1

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
Bullshit. It's a way to acknowledge our own pettiness and privilege, not to be special snowflakes. Same with first world problems.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-16 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Except a lot of us in the third world have those same so-called first world problems. It's bloody fucking aggravating that you think you're acknowledging your pettiness when you're really saying you have no idea what our lives are like, nor do you care.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-13 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
White people problems = Getting easily sunburned resulting in the breakout of more moles and freckles. (Yes, I know some white people can tan without burning. Lucky stiffs.)

White people problems = Having to deal with that no one can spell your mile long Eastern European surname right. ("Look, just call me, "Mr. Ski," alright.")

White people problems = Trying to convince others that Lutefish is actually tasty. ("Yes, it smells like hell, itself. But, I swear, it's good.")

I am sure there are more...

(Anonymous) 2012-05-13 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
(Yes, I know some white people can tan without burning. Lucky stiffs.)

Yeah. We're called Mediterranean and there are millions of us.

Having to deal with that no one can spell your mile long Eastern European surname right. ("Look, just call me, "Mr. Ski," alright.")

Isn't this the norm with most long, non-Western European names?

Trying to convince others that Lutefish is actually tasty.

I have no fucking clue what lutefish is.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-13 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
*facepalm*

Your reaction to "why did the chicken cross the road" joke is, "Of course, it would be get to the other side. It's a bird. What else could it do?" Isn't it?

You're Mediterranean, so next time I'll try some slapstick. Ay, dios mio!

[identity profile] maiira.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
White people problems = Trying to convince others that Lutefish is actually tasty.

Nah, I'm pretty sure every culture has one of those (a nasty-ass fermented food that was created before the advent of refrigeration and is only "food" in the sense that it's carbon-based and sometimes digestible).

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
..have.. you ever heard of this weird little thing called "intersectionality"? You can be white and also be a woman, or queer, or trans*, or mentally ill. It's possible to be ANY color and have these problems.

[identity profile] uncieloazul.livejournal.com 2012-05-13 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
same. i fucking hate the whole "white people/first world problems" thing. it's so fucking condescending.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-13 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
This. To me it's basically saying, "You are not allowed to feel emotion. Just suck it up and take what ever punches you get no matter how bloody and bruise you become."

It's inhumane and without compassion and empathy. And then you turn around and expect the person you just said that to, to have compassion and empathy back. That's not how it works.

[identity profile] uncieloazul.livejournal.com 2012-05-13 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
yeaaaaah. because you aren't poor or idk with other serious problems, you cannot complain about stuff? pffffffft.

the quoted text in this article (http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2011/11/whats-wrong-with-firstworldproblems/248829/) expresses it far better than i ever could.

You are so very right, anon. I always wonder, are these people oblivious to the gap between what they preach and what they practice? Or do they honestly think that they are entitled to receive consideration they're unprepared to give?

This. This shit pisses me off so much, and it's useless getting into discussions about it because anyone who says this kind of crap just wants to play the Oppression Olympics.

Yes I'm Caucasian. Yes other people do have it worse than I do. But fuck those people for trying to say because I was born this way that my problems don't mean a thing and I should just "get over them". What seems insignificant to one person can mean life or death for another.

I personally always considered 'first world problems' to refer to things that are extremely petty or easily fixed by the complainer that are whined about anyway. (e.g. 'I have to plug in my laptop but the power cable's in my ROOM!')

If it's used for anything beyond that, well, that makes me very sad. :I

I hate it when people use "white people problems" to describe class issues, because it feels like saying only the white people can ever be rich/famous/whatever. Sure, a lot of them are. But it's weird as shit to see Samuel Jackson on the "White Whine" blog, wtf.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. People in developing nations can also get upset over minor problems and problems with luxuries. Part of the issue with "first world problems" is it furthers the stereotype that everybody in developing nations is a dirt farmer, and "white people problems" is similarly problematic.

Good luck pointing out that classism is the most fundamental of all privileges.

Oh, you know... gettin' sun burned, gettin' lost in the snow, gettin' mistaken for Yetis, having claim on the Olsen Twins, not being able to jump, Vanilla Ice, that sorta thing.

gettin' mistaken for Yetis

you would not believe how many tranquilizers i have to dodge every day just going to the grocery store... and the fact that i can't jump makes it even more difficult....
