7. OMG SANDOR CLEGANE + SANSA
:D :D :D I still haven't figured out if I like them as a couple or not, but AAAAH I just love reading about them period.

16. YES COME OVER TO THE HIP HOP SIDE. *dangles Blue Scholars album as bait*

(Anonymous) 2007-07-21 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Blue Scholars? I'll have to look into them.

7. *secret smile* Hee hee.
17. HAHAHAHA. I LOVE IT. Also, I love the graphic itself. It's pretty!

[identity profile] quaedam.livejournal.com 2007-07-21 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
1. . . .you think less of them if they *do* or if they *don't* like it?

6. I will never understand the unbelievably huge fandom for that character.

11. Hee--I only know Bridget as a 4-chan meme. Still--I have a predilection for cross-dressing guys in straight relationships. Likewise cross-dressing girls--it's fun. ^^

15. Sorry, religious symbols are just too much fun to misuse--and it's been happening for as long as there have *been* religious symbols of any kind--hell, it goes the other way, too: secular images and symbols get absorbed into religious imagery as well as vice-versa. It's the subjective meaning which *you* find in any given symbol which is important, but you cannot really control what meaning it may or may not have for anyone else.

17. WHAT

20. Aubrey Beardsley! (Also--wow, you're cranky. ^^) But still--*Aubrey Beardsley!*

20

(Anonymous) 2007-07-21 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
I really was, lol. But I feel better now! :D

Also I love Aubrey Beardsley. ♥♥♥

1.) I had the same issue. I started to think that I was very good, but ... I came to realize that I will always have more to learn. Humility is a good lesson.

8.) If this is addressed to me (and I have good reason to think that it is), I think I know who you are, and I want to tell you that your appreciation of my work means the world to me. (Most people find my stuff unreadable, and I get a paltry number of reviews, most of them one-liners.) You do not annoy me, and I do not wish for you to be intimidated by me. :-) Never be afraid to talk to me.

10.) (Thank you for putting AFF in the picture. The extra publicity is appreciated by the staff.)

18.) I do not think I would mind real gay porn if it did not have the anal focus. There are fans of man-on-man action out here who prefer other activities. :-(

19.) (The curse of #19!) Whether or not this is addressed to me (most likely not), I feel this urge to strike with the Fist of Justice and issue the reminder that there is a rule: The truly outstanding 'fics in a fandom are often those with the least number of reviews.

20.) As a Borders employee, I approve of one of your points. I cannot shelve the manga if there are squatters in the aisle, and that bugs me. (The good ones take the stuff they want to read and go sit in the café.)

18

[identity profile] ex-parle.livejournal.com 2007-07-21 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
:O Not a lot that I've seen focus on the anal~ Which was nice, I'll admit.

20. You know, the funny thing about this is, I bet it would be perfectly fine if someone "normal" and "attractive" was wearing an anime shirt in public or cosplayed. However, if they are fat and act like a hyper fangirl/fanboy, oh god no gtfo. Jesus, this secret just screams "insecure" to me -- but also reminds me how of how great it is that many people are comfortable and happy with just being themselves, no matter how annoying someone else may find them out to be.

[identity profile] ew-younerd.livejournal.com 2007-07-21 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Word. WHenever I catch myself being embarrassed for someone 'nerdy' in public, I stop and realize just how comfortable they are with being themselves, even if they are a bit eccentric. And I find that really admirable!

Look at this way;

HALLOWEEN is the one time of the year for skinny, anorexic girls to dressy slutty and get away with it.

ANIME CONS are the only time in which fat people can dress up and "FEEL GOOD" about themselves and think they look "GOOD" and will get action with the next nerdy overweight person next to them.

It's just too bad they end up over half the internet as a mockery and ridiculed.

15: I'm a Christian (more of a Christopagan to be exact) and I don't mind the "misuse" of the cross as a symbol for a major reason: crosses predated Christianity. The cross symbol has existed in many pre-Christian and non-Christian cultures, and even in Christian history, crosses weren't invented for Jesus. They were invented as a tool of brutal public execution, used on Jesus (as well as on many other people both before and after him), and as well as symbolizing Jesus, came to symbolize sacrifice, death, pain, hurt, wounds, suffering. . . many things that make them an attractive symbol for the gothically-inclined or for someone wanting to evoke the imagery.

Also, the use of a cross (or cross-shaped weapons, yay for my fandom ^_^)in anime or manga to identify someone as religious isn't necessarily meant as offense as much as a part of the story.

For example, the Eye of Michael in Trigun has a cross as one of its signature signs. In manga canon, the group is a death-cult of assassins that worships the Plants. . . but the group is implied in canon to have some "Christian" leanings (e.g. it operates in churches, even its assassins dress and look much as Christian priests aside from being killers and organized criminals) so therefore having crosses in its imagery, to me, qualifies as a legitimate part of the story. Yes, the mangaka could have used leaves or feathers, but it wouldn't have had the same impact, the same connection to something "real" that added the extra layer of scariness to the cult. It elevates it, IMO, from "unexplainable" to nearly "believable."

17: ROFL! I'm all for calling him "Bishie Cuddles". . . no, no, I'm not that far gone. ~_^ But all the namewank is just fucking stupid. Raito does not make someone a weeaboo and elitist, and Light doesn't make someone cool and elitist.

18: Most of my objection to RL porn of any sexuality is that it's so fake and so plastic (even more than art and writing), and it's incredibly objectifying of real people who play those stock roles. Personally, I prefer art, writing, whatever, since the characters *aren't* real people and therefore there's no guilt over objectification. (although looking realistic is a great plus for me, and realistic either to reality or to the canon or both is a goal I go for in my Poser art unless I'm parodying) If it's good I get hot or at least smile, if it's bad I can laugh myself senseless. If it's real pr0n and it's bad (e.g. no enjoyment, someone in pain, etcetera), I feel guilty that someone had to be dehumanized for my entertainment.

With m/m real pr0n, the butt focus is also a big turnoff. Not that much yaoi fanart is that much better, but at the very least there's usually a little more foreplay rather than "stick it in now."

Also, even though I identify as male, writing is much hotter to me. Long live porn WITH plot. It's like having the best of both worlds. ^_^

20: Yes, and birds go tweet. Why do we care again?

21: What's that anime? I think it looks really cool. I love noir-styled or semi-noir-styled stuff. Cowboy Bebop when it had the style going on occasion, Detective Story in the Animatrix, Big O. . .

22: If you don't like concrit, could you specify you don't want criticism in the author's notes somewhere? A lot of us don't know and can't read your mind, and seeing as many of our friends like concrit or pointing out problems, we do it thinking you want it.

23: lol ew.

[identity profile] valkyriur.livejournal.com 2007-07-21 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
#15, you need to understand that Christianity in Japan and many places is just another mythology like Greek and Roman Gods. There is also a lot of other folklore, if you look out there, that uses the cross as a symbol for other things. So...try not to take it personally.

#22, while I understand where you're coming from, you can seriously benefit from "concrit". I, also, post my stories exactly how I want them and don't want to change them once they're posted. If you do get "concrit" though, I've found that it helps to take those comments and consider them when writing your next story, rather than rewriting or "fixing" the one they commented about. :)

I totally agree.

I also miss the old Turks; y'know, when they didn't fail at life and when they were actually deep characters.

[identity profile] klytaemnestra.livejournal.com 2007-07-21 03:14 am (UTC)(link)

2. I know, right? I used to love Reno when I first played the game but slowly I began to loathe him because he turned into something he was not in the game. Reno's not a whore, he's not going to let people rape and abuse him -- for the love of God he is a Turk. Who the fuck would try to rape a Turk and expect to live? I hate what fandom did to Reno. They turned him into a perverted idiot or a rape victim, or a whore and he's always stupid and childish acting or a sex fiend.

5. You're a werewolf? Yes. Are you fucking serious? Yes, that too.

15. I hate that. I love religious imagery mainly of the Catholic persuasion but I will only use it in art where the character would be seen with a rosary. I hate how wearing a cross makes you Goth or something. I wear a Jerusalem cross and a St Jude medallion on a chain every day of my life but that's because of my religion and partly because of my historical obsessions. Of course, the average person doesn't even know what the cross I'm wearing even is. I cringe every time I see some little anime Goth boi on dA wearing a spiked collar with a cross. It's a symbol of my faith and I don't really appreciate vampire wannabes and stupid Goths turning it into something it's not and how so many artists do use it to make something edgy. You don't see them using the Star of David or the Crescent and the Star or any other religious symbol.

18. I think your problem is the same problem I have with porn in general. I like the emotional connection in yaoi, however random fucking between two actors is just unappealing to me. I'll watch gay porn but I get a lot more out of yaoi, shounen-ai and just hinted implications. I find kissing of hands and sucking on fingers and such far more appealing than someone giving head because it's just somehow sexier to me. I've seen some nice gay porn in the past, but it was actually two men having very intimate sex on a sofa with some nice kissing and such. And I've seen some really bad gay porn ... which I won't get into here. Lol. Really, for me yaoi is all about the emotional connections between two men and the snogging. Sex is nice, but I'd rather have to men touching and talking and just being close on an intimate level without all the gratuitous fake sex.

20. You sound like a sad little person, actually.

[identity profile] rmarques.livejournal.com 2007-07-21 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
15. Truth of the matter is, crosses pre-date christianity. Even in the very begining of the cultural development of man, could we find crosses. In Japan crosses were also used for something pretty similar to the crucifiction. Someone using a cross on a character, it may not be just for the "goth" effect, but it may also be to represent suffering, sacrifice, or even just a cultural reference. Remember, the cross may remind christians of Jesus, however, to many people, it may just remind them of the suffering caused by a barbaric act of execution.
You know, the way the cross is seen is somewhat similar to, say, the swastica. It's now known as a Nazi symbol, however, the Indus used it way before the Nazis came along. And the Buddhists also used similar (if not identical) symbols on maps, to indicate the presence of a buddhist temple in that location.

2. The world needs moar Turk love, if ya ask me. ♥

20. lawl NAZI BITCH. Dude, since when are all fangirls fat? Generalize much? Sure, some cosplayers pick characters that don't fit their body type, but that's beside the point, isn't it?

20

[identity profile] nashidesei.livejournal.com 2007-07-21 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
...Where am I supposed to wear my anime shirts, then?

Should I only talk about HagaRen behind closed doors?

If the only reason I'm going to Borders is to pick up a couple new manga, what's the problem with me standing over in that section perusing the shelves? Or is it only okay because I'm rail-skinny and therefore don't have a "fat" face for you to punch?

And, skipping past the most likely person-specific points, some of the best cosplayers I've seen were overweight--what does it matter so long as they're having fun and doing it well?

In other words: STFU and GTFO.
