Even after reading the Fanlore article and reading some Sherlock fics, I don't think I'll ever get alpha/beta/omega fic, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I won't either, anon, you're not alone.

Same.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. I just don't find it at all interesting and the few times I've tried to give it a chance (Sherlock and a few other fandoms) I've found the characterization to be too wildly ooc to be enjoyable.

I read some of the links posted a few days ago, and...so apparently they can become pregnant? Yeah. That's basically the usual yaoi mpreg fare. Just...ew.

I hate it 'cause it seems like really lazy shorthand giving an excuse for why these characters have to fit these personality/gender/bedroom/wtfever roles.
And it's all ~inborn and shit, you can't ever change it and bleargh.

I agree. It's really aggravating and, when it's not handled well, it says some really fucked up things about how the author views women. I read them mostly out of curiosity (as in, wtf is this and why are people interested in it) and almost always get disgusted with the attitudes part way through.

I wonder if it has to be written by very young people, as I have seen fics where men (as these are often about m/m) who are 'wet and ready' for their mate. Um. Yeah. Admittedly I haven't had anal sex, but ...is that possible (without prep)?

...or is that another deviation these fics take?

To be honest, I wouldn't probably be so grumpy if there was more m/f werewolf fic out there. But the alpha/omega thing seems solely dominated in m/m fanfiction.

OP, are you me? It took me forever to figure out why there was so much alpha/omega stuff with no mention of the characters being werewolves.

[personal profile] fanaberia 2012-07-10 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't ask me OP, I had thought these were shapeshifter or warewolf fics. When I learnt what this whole 'verse was about I thought it was an excellent setting for a sci-fi dystopia with an underground resistance fighting for reproduction/romantic freedom. Eh, not that I'm willing to check if stories like this are out there.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
This trope isn't really my thing, but secrets like this baffle me. If you don't like it, don't read it. There's no point in harshing another person's good time.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
The concept itself hits some of my dub-con kinks, but I usually can't get over the whole, "self-lubricating anus/anal-womb" thing when it's emphasized in fic. I just...it's not for me.

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2012-07-10 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't actually read these types of fic, but every time I hear someone complain about the top/bottom thing I just want to point out that a lot of people just simply are into that dynamic...

[personal profile] lunabee34 2012-07-10 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh wait. *That's* what that is? LOL

I'd been seeing Alpha and Omega and omegaverse all over the tags and in summaries on the AO3, but didn't know what that's all about. I also had to ask you guys what knotting is, so um, yes. Not surprising.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-11 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I SWORE I would never read any alpha/beta/omega fic, including knotting, because I didn't think it could be sexy at all.

uh.

I'm in the SPN fandom, and it has a way of corrupting you. Now I find knotting and a/b/o goddamn hot. I don't know why. (I don't even mind the self lubing asses, though for the record not all of them have that. Ahem.)

Hey, OP, if you don't like it, you don't have to read it. I don't get scat or infantilism at all, but...y'know. I just don't read it.

It's just a kink, and not really supposed to be realistic, I think.

Be careful about the "yaoi" label though, some slashers are very sensitive about being compared to the manga/anime crowd! No matter how similar the writing is...

From what I've seen in the SPN fandom, there are some writers who will take the whole concept and turn it into a really interesting world where the dynamics of all of it is explored and how that dynamic changes relationships and personalities (what does it mean for someone who is headstrong and independent to feel they have to submit), as well as how non shape-shifters/regular humans might react. And best of all, who is an alpha/beta/omega is not at all determined by gender!

And there are many for whom it is a shameless yaoi trope (I once found the f/f version of that though). But that's their thing and I don't have to read it. You can generally tell which is which from the summary and chapter length. I don't know how it is in other fandoms.

[personal profile] madmaudlin 2012-07-11 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, I think they're hot. *shrug* Alpha/beta/omega is a kink. It's fun to play around with in the same way that body horror, noncon, sex pollen, and other kinks that remove control are fun to play around with. That it's biologically assigned makes it better for some people and completely without interest for others.

If you don't like it, that's fine, but maybe you haven't found the fandom that you enjoy it in yet? It only works for me in certain fandoms while in others, it leaves me cold.

I agree 100%. I usually like d/s, but all the mpreg, animal penises and SELF-LUBRICATING ASSHOLES really squick me. It's like someone bundled one thing I love and all the things I hate into one confusing and awful thing.

[personal profile] slightweasel 2012-07-11 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
Idk, I think A/B/O has the potential to be really interesting. Most of what I've tried to read is either kinky sex or an oppression narrative where either omegas (usually) or alphas (sometimes) are oppressed by the other group. I'm not really interested in either of those things when it comes to this trope, but I do find the animalistic stuff and the way it would affect interpersonal relationships etc to be really interesting. There's so many different ways you could play it, so many angles you could look at it from, when people have these instincts/biological imperatives that are different/stronger than the ones we have. As a HUGE fan of well-done mpreg fic, I'm also thrilled to have a go-to trope for knocked up dudes.

A/B/O is really pretty big right now, both inside and out of my large fandom (XMFC), and it doesn't look like it's going away, so if you don't like it, don't read it.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-11 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
I hate this trope. Tried to read some but there's so many issues with it that now I immediately hit the back button if I ever happen to open one of these stories.
kathkin: (Rainbow Cake)

[personal profile] kathkin 2012-07-11 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen it done well with a lot of depth and insight into what the culture of a world with alpha/omega biology would be like, good characterisation, and relationships that come across as equal. I've also seen it done badly and perpetuate a whole lot of weird stereotypes. Depends completely on the author. *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2012-07-12 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
I could forgive pretty much everything about these fics except for the fact that there is apparently a uterus in the colon. You can have all the dog-penis kink you want but some one please tell me how the assbabies are supposed to work? Can the pregnant guy still poop while pregnant? what?
